RATIONALE

This module in algebra for Grade 7 supports the K to 12 Basic Education

Curriculum in Mathematics. It serves as an aid in the discussion of the topics and
tool to assess individuals’ learning. It is designed to help students build
understanding and make learning algebra fun and easy.
Learning the lessons are divided into several parts: a.) Objectives b.)Lesson
c.)Tips d.) Practice e.) Try it! f.) Critical thinking and g.)My Insights that will lead
them to have better understanding and appreciation of key concepts and
algebraic expressions, the properties of real numbers as applied in linear
equations, and inequalities in one variable.
Since Algebra involves real-life applications, it is important to understand
the different ways on how to do calculations involving real life problems that will
help struggling learners to have better understanding of concepts, methods and
to formulate solutions.
The purpose of this is to develop the necessary skills among the students
in problem solving, critical thinking, reasoning, making connections,
representations and decisions in real life to make learning a worthwhile
experience for the students.

GLOSSARY

A numerical coefficient is a constant which determines the number of

times a variable is to be multiplied.
Literal coefficients are the variables, the letter coefficient or the unknown
quantities.
A variable is any letter in the English alphabet that is used to represent a
real number
Monomial is an algebraic expression of only one term.
Binomial is an algebraic expression of two terms.
Trinomial is an algebraic expression of three terms.
Polynomial is an algebraic of more than three terms.
Variable is an unknown or changing the number.
Constant is a number that doesn’t change.
Coefficient is the number that is multiplied by the variable.
Like terms are terms that have the same variables including the exponents
that go with those variables
A mathematical phrase contains an algebraic expression that does not
express a complete thought.
A mathematical expression is a collection of numbers, variables,
operations, and grouping symbols.
An exponent is a number (small and raised) that represents the “shortcut
method” to showing how many times a number is multiplied by itself.
Base is the number or quantity raised to a given power or exponent.
Exponent is the small letter or number written on the upper right hand
corner of a number or quantity which indicates the number of times the
base is taken as a factor.
Power is the product obtained by taking the base as a factor n th times or
the value of the base raised to the given exponent.
The Laws of Exponents (also called “Rules of Exponents”) come from three
ideas
 The exponent says how many times to use the number in a
multiplication.
 A negative exponent means divide, because the opposite of
multiplying is dividing.
1
 A fractional exponent like 1/n means to take the nth root: 𝑥 𝑛 = √𝑥
𝑛

The absolute value of a number is the distance from zero (0) on the
number line. Since the distance is non-negative the absolute value of a
number is always non-negative.
The absolute value is used in solving these equations. For any real
numbers a and b, where b ≥ 0, if | a | = b, then a = b or -a = b. This case is
often written as a = -b.
An absolute value equation is an equation that contains an absolute value
expression.
Trichotomy Property -For any two real numbers, a and b, exactly one of
the following statements are true.
a<b a=b a>b
The properties of inequality are also known as axioms of inequality.
