The syllabus for IBPS English subject capsules itself with 4 kinds of ingredients which are

specified and explained in detail as under.

1. English Passage = 10-15 questions are asked.
This is generally called as a Reading Comprehension unit where you will be given an
unseen passage, maybe on Economy, politics, fiction, or anything. Comprehension
means the conclusion, theme detection, passage completion, and the topic
rearrangement of passage, spelling, and sentence. You’ll be questioned on the basis of
that passage and simultaneously your reading knowledge, your speed to grab the
meaning and antonyms synonyms vocal will also be tested.Grammar-
2. Grammar = 5 questions are asked.
This is really the main and sensitive portion of your test as it includes all your main topics
like Tenses, articles, prepositions, Subject-verb agreement, sentence construction,
phrasal verbs, pronouns, nouns, adverbs, non-finite verbs, common errors, degrees of
comparisons, active and passive voice, direct-indirect speech, idioms and one-word
substitution.
3. Vocabulary = 10-15 questions are asked.
You need to focus on topics such as- error spotting, phrase replacement, cloze test, fill in
the blanks, and sentence rearrangement.
4. Para jumbles or verbal ability = 5 questions can be asked.
It includes jumbling of sentences and you need to correct it either verbally, or rearranging
it Sentence rearrangement questions.

 Data interpretation- it is really a very important topic in bank exams because every time at
least 2/3 questions are asked and this one provides you a definite increment in your
scores once you command your skills upon this. Don’t plan to skip this topic.
 Miscellaneous- we have provided this section ‘miscellaneous’ tag because this includes a
number of topics and these topics do not hold a sure appearance in exam pattern.
Sometimes they are asked, sometimes not. It is not compulsory that questions from every

section. The accuracy level would also be high.

problem on ages, percentages, averages, simple/ compound interest, profit and loss,
ratio and proportion, data interpretation.
2.Difficult and more time consuming

The topics covered under this category are probability, quadratic equations, arithmetic
topics – mixture and allegation, time and work, time, speed and distance, number series.
