n the last edition, I wrote an
article about “the rise of UK
Afrobeats” which discussed the
credibility that Afrobeats music has
gained in the UK and outside of Africa
in general, within the last two years
with successes for acts like Mista
Silva, Moelogo, Maleek Berry, Sona,
Kwamz and Flava just to name a
few. Fast forward to 2017 and a new
sub-genre has emerged again from the
UK scene which has become hugely
embraced in no time.
Although it goes by various names;
Afro-swing or Afro-Bashment is a
blend of Afrobeats, Dancehall, a bit of
Grime and a bit of R’n’B. This genre
has been made very popular by acts
such as Kojo Funds, J Hus, Yungbane
and Not3s with hits like Dun Talking,
Did You See, Addison Lee etc. Some
of us Afrobeats enthusiasts will argue
that this sound was coined by Burna
Boy as he came into the game years
ago singing with such a vibe, which
I feel the UK acts may have copied
and developed. The interesting yet
inspiring thing about all the acts
mentioned above running the Afro-

swing/Afro-bashment movement is
that they are all of African descent
from countries such as Ghana,
Gambia, Congo and Nigeria. Although
they grew up in the UK listening to
the likes of Grime and Dancehall
they are also fans of Afrobeats,
obviously through their roots and have
consciously or unconsciously fused all
the elements (beats, broken English,
melodies) together to create the fast-
rising genre.
This new genre has taken a stronghold
in the Urban music game largely
because of the catchy songs and huge
young fan base it boasts, however the
massive machines behind the acts and
their music can’t be overlooked. Since
the initial interest and massive support
from influential platforms like GRM
Daily and LinkUpTV (online platforms
with large UK young audiences) the
attention of big music fishes i.e record
labels like Sony, Warner etc. were
quickly drawn into the Afro-swing
movement with Dollar and Pound
signs in their eyes. They started
handing out single and album deals to
these leading acts which in turn has

made them and the genre even bigger
than anyone imagined in such a short
space of time. With such backing by
major labels, this meant Radios like
the BBC, Capital FM, Kiss, The Beat
103.6, Rinse FM including pirate
stations have ensured their playlists
support the new acts and their genre
quicker than they would have if it
were still an underground genre.
Although Afrobeats acts based in
the UK and Africa such as Wizkid,
Davido, Sarkodie, Mista Silva,
Moelogo, Maleek Berry and Sona are
still making strides in the UK urban
market, a space that would have
been solely occupied by the Afrobeats
acts (as an emerging genre) is now
largely been filled by UK Afro-swing/
Afro-bashment acts that are signed,

that the labels have put in place to
promote them (that can’t be said by

9AM - Part of the day’s agenda is that we’ve
got a 2 day,2 video shoots kinda day!
Call time is at noon so I’ve got 3 hours to

Solutions (my marketing company - experts
in branding & marketing)
10-12PM - Meetings with a few corporate
clients who wanna bring that bag in one
or numerous ways with our hot talents at
DMW (Banks, Liquor brands, Telcos) etc.

tasking and crunching part of our day.
Especially Day 1 of the 2 day video shoots.

which is always exciting. First we all
rendezvous at the shoot location with all
team members present. Each talent has his
own team, so when it’s a rendezvous like
this it’s a full gang situation. Both creative

brainstorming plans and ideas. The
atmosphere is serious and playful at
the same time.
1.30-6PM - Call time active. The
creative talents get into their element
and start to make magic. Shooting a
video can be fun and hectic but we
grind out of passion so we never get
tired on the job! Work Work Work
that’s the motto of the day! Shooting
flicks to Hits all night until the
morning to get lucky.
7-11PM - We’re cooling off after the
shoot vibes and head to Shisha Room
to cool the nerves. Shisha Room
Lagos.NG is our No.1 cool down spot

Asa Asika! We enjoy a few drinks
and puffs of that good green and good
vibes. Overall, everyone’s getting
