PROJECT REPORT

INTRODUCTION

Organic wastes are created in vast amounts wherever there is human occupation. Instead
of ignoring these wastes, using them in sustainable remediation not only helps lessen environmental
pollution but also gives us the chance of innovating it into “widespread adoption.” It is nature’s way
of breaking down organic matter to turn it into nutrients to support and improve plant growth and
it consists of decayed organic matter. Organic fertilizers consume much time and effort to be made
and with the amount of organic wastes present in the school campus, the Beryllus Princeps Science
Club wanted to search for an innovative way to decompose these wastes through making use of
the recent studies on decomposing organic waste in a more efficient and less time consuming
ways. Recently, research studies have been done to create cost-effective devices that can hasten
the decomposition process without using any synthesized chemicals. Among these, bin composting
has been introduced as a cost-effective method, and this is what inspired the project. The project
would make use of a shredder and organic composter to hasten the process of composting instead
of relying on traditional composting methods (www.epa.gov). The school has a dormitory and the
kitchen’s organic wastes from food preparation along with the food wastes are collected in the
afternoon by backyard hog raisers as animal feed. However, the containers are sometimes
overflowing and the excess gets disposed of in open pits later to be composted, which takes a lot
of time. It also gets mixed with a variety of other wastes that are made of other materials which,
though biodegradable, do not easily decompose. In addition, there are plenty of leaf litter and
fallen stems that accounts for the organic wastes around the school’s premises. The club believes
this project can truly help the school in waste management.

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of this project is to lessen the wastes by producing organic compost.

Specifically, it aims to:

1. Produce compost using bin composting with a machine to hasten the composting process;
2. Analyze quality of compost produced for proper classification; and,
3. Use the product for the school’s vegetable garden and later make available for the local
community for sustainability.

CLASSIFICATION: Environmental Awareness and Preservation

The project can be classified under Environmental Awareness and Protection because it
promotes the practice of recycling and energy recovery, which represent two major components
of reducing carbon footprint. Although a machine innovation will be employed, the emphasis is on
how the school can manage and utilize its organic waste efficiently.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

The club is looking forward to reducing and managing the organic wastes in the school. It is
expected that the school can produce compost that can be used for its vegetable gardens without
spending money on synthetic fertilizers. It also aims to spread awareness to the students particularly
in waste segregation. Moreover, it is expected that the compost could later be made available to
the local community, even sold commercially at an affordable price, for its sustainability.

RELEVANCE OF THE STUDY

Using bin composting in waste management is ideal for the school. It could reduce organic
waste securely and cleanly because it is contained in a closed vessel, thereby reducing the insect
and vermin infestation, space-saving as it can be done in a confined area, and can be utilized
year-round, even indoors when the weather is cold.

2017 ACTIVITY COMPLETION REPORT

The school can benefit from its use because the compost/product can be used for the
gardens without added cost. It could also share the technology to the local community because
the technology involved is not very difficult, and though there will be an initial investment in making
the machine, the benefits for the environment will be greater: less pollution, reduced waste, no
overwhelming smell of rot and decomposition, less greenhouse gas emission, and the product can
be used and sold later.

STATUS

The device that the club used to produce fertilizers is based on a concept that has been
proven and effective, that is, bin composting. Its first product was tested by applying it to a
household garden. Currently this device is being used in the school to process organic wastes,
which the club intends to fertilize or improve soil quality. The product is still in its initial testing phase
and would have to be further submitted and compared to match soil standards. The club plans to
continue the project in order to produce organic fertilizer for the school’s purpose until such time
that the end product could be available to the community. Moreover, it would be a way to
significantly reduce the time required to produce compost.
