Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Identifying and Describing Geometrical Shapes and Figures
Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 2nd
Content Standard Addressed:

MGSE2.G.1 Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a
given number of equal faces.11 Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.

Technology Standard Addressed:

1. Empowered Learner

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): As students get their tablet they will sit on the carpet so that all
students will easily be able to see all of the questions and responses. In addition to seating I will
incorporate images and terms into the game so that ELLs and other students that are struggling will be able
to make connections more readily.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

The Kahoot activity will be introduced at the start of the lesson as a review of previous content. The Kahoot
will serve as a review of identifying various shapes and figures such as triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons,
hexagons, and cubes.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☒ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Student Response and Assessment Tools
Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: During the Kahoot activity the students will be
on the carpet with their tablets and the teacher will be at the front of the room facilitating the activity and
providing appropriate feedback after each question. The activity will last approximately 10-15 minutes.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☐ Yes
☒ No
Why or why not?
I feel that it is more beneficial to have a conversation after reviewing the results of each question to see
exactly where the strengths and misconceptions are occurring. As a result, immediate feedback will be given
but in the form of a classroom discussion. If it is only posted at the end of the game it could get skipped over
or become overwhelming for ELLs and others that struggle with reading and/or comprehension skills.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the game, the lesson will progress into an introduction about using attributes such as angles, faces,
and edges to describe figures. We will consider various pictures of the shapes and figures we reviewed in
the game and how we can use new terms to describe them.

How will the data be used? The data retrieved from the Kahoot activity will provide me with an overview of
what the majority of the class is mastering and the areas of misunderstanding. As a result I will be able to
narrow down if a student is struggling do to an absence if there is a true misunderstanding. Once patterns are
found I will be able to determine the best way to re-teach or incorporate the challenging content into lessons.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. My goal for this activity is to check to make sure that
students are understanding the foundations of the content before progressing into more advanced material.
If not, I will be able to identify those areas they are struggling with and find out if they would benefit from re-
teaching or if the understanding is enough to move on to new content with the shapes and figures.
Reflective Practice: To further extend this lesson I can incorporate both physical and interactive
manipulatives for students to explore. This will help them to visualize, understand, and differentiate the
following terms: angles, faces, and edges. They can then use this to help them solve geometry riddles.
