Chart Overview

Month #12
This lecture presents an overview of chart analysis, with respect to advising remedies as
well as analyzing key parts of the chart. The lecture provides a means to apply the
information given so far in the webinars of www.rama-edu.com, as well as advice to
budding astrologers.

Dhruva Nāḍī – 4 Steps
• Section I: Bhagya • Section II: Pancasiddhantika
• Lagneśa [application of brain] • Grahaśīla (the 24 guṇa and sambandha)
• Navamśa Lagneśa [extent of dharma] • Kāraka
• Naksatreśa (of Lagna or Moon whichever • Nakṣatra (navatāra chakra)
is stronger) [longevity and focus of life]
• Vargottama (ṣadvarga strength)
• Dispositors of all three [refer
anityakāraka] • Adhipatya (lords of houses)
• Section III: Bhāva phala (examination
of all house lords and their placement)
• Section IV: Daśa-Bhukti phala

Dhruva Nāḍī cont.
• For the average reader, the steps of Dhruva Nāḍī seem to be interwoven and therefore unclear
as to the purpose of the given steps.
• E.g. Grahaśīla and kāraka are two separate sub-sections, yet in the former we are asked to see the kāraka,
whereas in the latter we are ALSO asked to do so!
• In sub-section grahaśīla reference is made to vargabala, but another section on vargottama also exists to
examine this.
• Adhipatya asks us to examine the strength of the lords of houses, but the section on bhāvaphala is completely
dedicated to this!
• Finally, Nakṣatrasiddhanta asks us to examine Tārabala, but so does the Daśa-bhukti section! Atleast we can
guess that the daśā used is Viṁśottari...
• The problem is that different strength calculations are used at each step, but yet are NOT
mentioned explicitly! This confuses the reader at every step making the system useless to most.

Oḍīya tradition (so far)
• Learning from a bonafide Jyotiṣa tradition has some clear advantages, in that the
meanings of the ancient texts become better understandable, and gaps or
assumptions of the sages who wrote the books become very evident.
• Every complete jyotiṣa text is termed samhita. Therein every part of Jyotiṣa is
covered by the author ranging from calculations, interpretation to remedies, or in
other words, the 3 skanda of gaṇita, horā and samhita. Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śastra
comprises ONLY of the Horā section of Parāśara Samhita. For the same reason,
sections on Panchanga are not existent. In fact the beginning of the 3rd chapter of
the work asks us to learn all about nakṣatra and such matters from other sources
than that [portion] of the Horā. Parāśara expects you to know about Panchanga
before reading the Horā section of his work!
Rare Jyotish Tools, By Visti Larsen (www.rama-edu.com) 4
Oḍiya tradition (simple version) – 3 steps
• You need 3 parts of the chart available to have a decent reading of the chart.
1. Panchanga [creation doṣa]
2. Charakāraka chakra of 8 (or 7) kāraka [soul doṣa]
3. Rāśi, Navāṁśa (and Drekkana) [mind and body doṣa in naisargika and sthira kāraka]
• Advise: The reason for this order is to help you identify the extent of a problem. A
problem in the Panchanga is more grave than that of the Charakāraka, and also more
grave than that of planetary positions. This is also the order in which the remedies
need to be given.
• Further note: Some panchanga flaws are permanent and cannot be remedied and
have left a permanent imprint on the individual, much like an ant cannot become a
bee and vice-versa... Some humans act like insects or other lower-intellectual beings
because of such doṣa.

What you don’t get
• The simple version doesn’t tell you:
o What brought you to the planet
o The extent of divinity in you
o Your task in this planet
o The extent of fortune in this planet
o Daśā results
• With more learning those questions can get answered and you will
advance to a style of analysis much like that of Dhruva Nāḍī.
Rare Jyotish Tools, By Visti Larsen (www.rama-edu.com) 15
Parikara
• The vedic name for remedy is parikara. Some use the term upaya which means ‘a
shortcut’ or ‘a way around’, which suggests avoiding the karma without solving it.
• All vedic remedies are parikara and all clients want upaya! This is why works like Lal
Kitab are popular.
• Karma has been fixed by Kāla, for which even Viṣṇu has to reincarnate! Kāla loosely
means time and in the negative means, wasting or loosing time. Doing time is very
appropriate slang for being jailed. Either way you need to spend time with karma and
that is why Vedic and similar remedies work!
• The beauty of prayer is that you for brief moments can convert earth-time into a
different timescale. E.g. If you spend 1 day with the Devas, 1 year will pass on earth.
30 days with the Pitṛs has a similar equation, e.g. 1 year. This is all recorded in
Purāṇa to help us appreciate the power of prayer over time.
Rare Jyotish Tools, By Visti Larsen (www.rama-edu.com) 16
Spending time
• Of all remedies, the only sure remedy which takes care of time is mantra jāpa. Neither gemstones, amulets,
roots, foodstuffs, etc. have as much an effect on time as mantra does.
• When performing Jāpa you must burn, which is the process of tapasya. Without burning you are not doing
justice to the karma you experienced in previous lives.
• There is an entire science of making the remedy as effective as possible. The focus in all these is preparation.
Pujaris prepare by practicing certain nyāsa which lifts those involved from Bhurloka to one of the higher
loka, usually above Satyaloka, where every mantra recited becomes an offering to Śrī Kṛṣṇa in the
Sudhāmṛta Chakra. Brahmins infuse their mantra of practice with extra (nuclear) powers by the practice of
their Gāyatri mantra, using a combination of Praṇayama and Japa. Mantra Samskara is the process of
preparing the mantra in such a way that its recitation is infallible. In all these cases, the purpose is to lift the
persons time to a higher loka, so as to compress the span of suffering.
• A Tīrtha is a place or person which can help the karma burn at a higher pace. Performing tapasya at a Tīrtha
or in the presence of a person who is like a Tīrtha, i.e. a Paramguru or a sacred place of penance, has the
power of Satyaloka (or above). Some properly trained Pujari (most Pujaris) and Jyotiṣa (very few) in the
teachings of Adi Śankara are also like a Tīrtha, and mantras received from them will surely give fruit as well.
Their mantras are being received above Satyaloka.

Rare Jyotish Tools, By Visti Larsen (www.rama-edu.com) 17

Tīrtha
• This author is yet to meet one who has spent a day with the Devas.
• The maximum tapabala follows the equation of: 40 days = 5 years, or 1 year = 40
years. This occurs through Mahāvidyā worship and occurs [hopefully] at the
timescale above Satyaloka.
• This equation is possibly linked to Bṛhaspati. The God Bṛhaspati spends 5 years per
sign. That sign is like God in our lives. The time Jupiter takes to cover a Navāṁśa is
40 days. Hence: Navāṁśa = God, and 40 days links to the 5-year sign.
• The first 40 days are always painful, after which the fruits follow. This beginning is
the churning phase of the karma.
• Reaping the results of the above is in most cases wishful thinking. Ask all clients to
recite the mantra for 13 (1 degree transit) or 40 days at least, after which ask them to
continue mantrajāpa until one year has been completed.

Advising remedies
• Sun is the soul of all. In the Kālapuruṣa he lords over the natural 5th house of Leo, and exalts in the natural
1st house of Aries.
• Hence the 1st and 5th houses in the chart represent the soul power. From here we examine whether the
person is capable of performing remedies. Malefics in either house are ruining the power to perform
remedies. Especially Mars in either house causes anger to ruin the mantra, much like Śiva seeking to leave
Satī during an argument.
• 4th house is the house of manasa or mind. Mantras specifically work on the mind, and therefore the
obstruction to the mantras is seen from here.
• If 5th house sustains the mind, the 3rd house causes its loss. If 1st house obstructs the mind from wrong thoughts, the
7th house allows it to run wild! Hence planets in 3rd or 7th house from Lagna can block the remedies from working.
Specifically 3rd makes the person waste their mind on activities which drain the mantra-śakti, as 7th house distracts
the mind. Both allow the mind to be unstable.
• Every house gives to the 12th and 7th from it. 12th is the act of giving and 7th is the person who receives the giving.
Hence the receipt of Mantra is seen in the 4th and 11th house. Malefics in these houses cause the mantra to not be
received resulting in little or no results from mantra.
• All mantra blocks need to be examined carefully and dealt with.

Don’t give a remedy easily
• Ahalyā’s curse by Gautama-ṛṣi could not be lifted by anyone but Śrī Rāma. So also
you cannot lift every curse as a Jyotiṣa.
• Śrī Rāma’s curse could also not be lifted by any of the Ṛṣi, and had to be experienced.
Some karmas are dṛdha or fixed.
• Direct planets are like movable signs... Spending all the fuel  karmas in movable signs are easy
to remedy.
• Once all the fuel is exhausted the planet is without energy and is dead. This is like retrogression
 planets retrograde or in fixed signs have karmas that cannot be changed.
• Refueling happens during stationary position  stationary or dual signs can have the karmas
changed through some effort.
• Time is controlled by the 1st (present), 5th (future) and 9th (past) houses. Planets in
5th and 9th affect the chitta every day, constantly and are also fixed karmas requiring
intense effort to be freed of. Chose your battles.

Śrī Rāma

The curses of Sun, Jupiter and Moon

(Jupiter being the strongest) is caused by the
aspects of Saturn, Mars (and Rāhu).
Of these Saturn is retrograde due to being
opposite Sun (image needs editing). Due to
this the karmas, despite being in movable
signs, could not be changed.
Saturn indicates the sorrow  sorrow must
be experienced.
