Note: Answer any FIVE full questions.

1 a. Mention the advantages and disadvantages of microstrip antenna. Design a rectangular


microstrip antenna for 1.8 GHz with RT-duroid 5880. FR4 substrate having r = 4.4, loss
tangent = 0.001 and h = 1.6m.m. (10 Marks)
b. Explain the geometry of Yagi-uda antenna along with its characteristics and radiation
pattern. (10 Marks)

2 a. Derive the array factor expression for uniformly excited, equally spaced linear alloys and
determine its directivity. (10 Marks)
b. What are beam-forming networks? Illustrate three forms of feed network. (10 Marks)

3 a. State Rumsey’s principle. Apply the same to two frequency independent antennas and
explain the same. (10 Marks)
b. Describe the operation of helical antenna consider a 10–turn helix at 8 GHz with a
circumference of 3.45 cm and a pitch angle of 15. Find the HPBW and gain. (10 Marks)

4 a. Explain the simple of parabolic reflectors and derive the expression for the field distribution
across the aperture of parabolic reflectors. (10 Marks)
b. What are the characteristics to be considered for the selection of feed? Explain the important
feed. (10 Marks)

5 a. Give a comparison of antenna synthesized method by considering side-lobe level, ripple and
transition width. (10 Marks)

b. Design a – 20dB Taylor distribution line source with n  5 . Plot the pattern and the current
distribution for l = 7(–7  u = u/  7). (10 Marks)

6 a. Discuss the generation and detection of MSK along with probability of error. (10 Marks)
b. With neat block schematic, illustrate symbol synchronizer. (10 Marks)

7 a. Illustrate the convolution encoder with the code tree diagram for the message bits as 110.
(10 Marks)
b. Discuss the encoder displaying catastrophic error propagation along with state diagram.
(10 Marks)

8 a. Determine the power spectra and bandwidth efficiency of M – ary PSK signals. (10 Marks)
b. Draw the DPSK transmitter with the input binary sequence 11001000,
i) Sketch the resulting waveform at the transmitter output
ii) Applying this waveform to the DPSK receiver, show that in the absence of noise, the
original binary sequence is reconstructed at the receiver output. (10 Marks)
