Above and Meets All Needs More

Beyond Expectations Attention
(Improve and
return to me) Commented [SH1]: I like the inclusion of “improve and
return” because it backs up the notion that the process is as
Craftsmanship important to art learning as the product.
● The work shows concern
for Excellence (Details
and Craftsmanship)

Creativity
● The work shows a
creative/unique solution
to the art problem Commented [SH2]: In today’s visual culture so many
(“Ask”) (It is not a copy, artists “borrow” images, reproduce them and manipulate
it is your own) them, so what is unique? I think the focus could be placed
on imagination instead, which happens to be a core value at
Understanding STEM Prep Academy.
The work shows learned content Commented [SH3]: This would be an appropriate space to
and technique assess students process and critical thinking along with the
application of learned content.
Assignment Fulfilled
● Carried assignment
to completion
● Artwork shows
understanding Commented [SH4]: This is redundant, instead this would
be an appropriate space to assess students understanding of a
unified piece of artwork and that all aspects of the surface
Comments: manipulated had been attended to appropriately and
thoughtfully.

1. What was something new that you learned during this project? Commented [SH5]: This is a content based question. I
think a more appropriate assessment of student learning
___________________________________________________________ would be asking how they applied what they learned to their
___________________________________________________________ artmaking process.

3. What did you struggle with during this project?

4. What goal(s) do you have to improve as an artist during the next

unit? Commented [SH6]: I think a 5th question could be
included to assess student learning, how did they include
___________________________________________________________ their personal artistic voice into their piece. This is
___________________________________________________________ something that gets discussed quite a bit in class, both whole
group and individually.

Reflection

Art 807

Sara Hyatt

At the onset of this school year I sat down with my academic coach

and took a look at my rubric to reflect on it and make sure I was assessing

what I was teaching. In that reflection I had made changes in assessing

primarily content and the art produced. Since then every time I sat down to

assess student work I could tell something was missing and that was each

individual’s process and problem solving through artmaking. I observe this

behavior and give one-on-one feedback to students during class but that vital

step to artmaking and learning was missing in their assessment.

Overall, I feel confident in my self-created rubric and student

reflection. I believe it provides for me a good sample of students learning,

process and skill set. This last year was not the first time I have sat down to

reconfigured my rubric and student reflection, and each year I feel I am

creating yet an even better measure of student learning and growth. I will

continue to evaluate my methods of assessment as my understanding of how

students learn grows and as the field of art education’s understanding also

changes and grows.
