The Dexter boys’ water polo
team finished second out of
six teams at the Saline Meijer
Invitational Tournament on
Saturday. Co-captain Austin
Daugherty showcased his tal-
ents and his talons, scoring a
hat trick in three of the games.
That is not unusual for
Daugherty, who leads the team
in individual scoring. What
was remarkable is that he had
three hat tricks in the same
game. That magic occurred
against the Saline Stingrays.

tournament, an exhausting

Huron book-ended the tourna-
ment.
In the first match, the Dexter
young men showed their grit,
matching the River Rats goal

ended 5-5. Huron dominated
the third quarter, however,
scoring three unanswered
goals, and the Rats pulled away
with a 14-6 win.

Mark Wajda is an impressive young
man – for several reasons.
First, there is the big picture. The Dexter
teenager has already laid out a road map
of where he wants to go in life. There is a
finish line he can see even though it’s not
exactly right around the corner.
Second, is Wajda’s determination to get
there. He’s made both big and small sac-
rifices and some tough decisions to help
improve the odds of reaching his goal.
He has his eye on the prize, his head and
heart in the right place and most impor-
tantly his feet on the ground.
Because his feet have a lot do with get-
ting him to where he wants to go.
The destination is Navy and wearing
the blue and gold for the Midshipmen
football team. “I played at the Navy camp
over the summer and want to play for
Navy,” says Mark, the son of Jim and Kris
Wajda of Dexter. “My grades are good and
getting better, and I will try to get into the
Naval Academy.”
Wajda even has a backup plan.

“If I don’t get into Navy, I would like to play foot-
ball and get a solid education,” he says. “I am going
to visit some schools and see what is the best fit.
But I am open and want to play college football.”
He also wanted to play running back in high
school – which brings us to one of those tough
decisions. Midway through his sophomore year at
Dexter High School, Wajda transferred to Addison
High School, one of 12 local districts that make
up the Lenawee Intermediate School District of
Lenawee County.
