Historia de marca

Para empezar la historia, es bueno saber que las papas Pringles no son precisamente papas fritas, pues
solo el 42% del producto contiene papa, el resto se compone de harinas y aceite vegetal. La marca
Pringles fue desarrollada en 1967 por P&G. La multinacional buscaba desarrollar un snack que pudiera
ser producido y distribuido con facilidad en cualquier lugar del mundo. Para cumplir esta misión P&G
contrató al químico Frederic Baur, quien durante dos años trabajó infructuosamente en desarrollar la
receta que tuviera buen sabor. Lastimosamente, al no dar resultados positivos, en 1958 fue retirado
del proyecto. Sin embargo, Baur dejó importantes aportes a la construcción del producto, pues fue él
quien inventó el empaque: Un cilindro de cartón recubierto de aluminio con una tapa plástica, este
ingenioso envase permitía mantener el producto fresco aun después de abierto.

Después del fracaso de Baur, a mediados de los años 60 Alexander Liepa retomó el proyecto y fue este
quien formuló la receta definitiva para las papas Pringles. Después, Gene Wolfe sería el encargado de
desarrollar la máquina para producirlas y darle al producto la forma de paraboloide hiperbólico.

Son muchas las historias que existen en torno a la creación del exitoso nombre Pringles. Mientras unos
aseguran que se debe a una máquina para producir papas desarrollada por Marcos Pringle en 1937, el
cual fue citado en la patente presentada por P&G. Otros aseguran que el nombre surgió de dos
publicistas de la compañía que vivían en Pringle Drive en Finneytown (Estados Unidos), los empleados
consideraron que el nombre combinaba bien con el producto, entonces decidieron utilizarlo.
Las Pringles fueron lanzadas al mercado en 1967 con su receta original bajo el nombre Pringle´s, un
año después se decidió simplificar el nombre y se retiró el apóstrofe, quedando Pringles. El éxito del
producto fue tal, que en 1975 el producto se empezó a comercializar en todo el mundo. Hoy en día
existen más de 100 extensiones de línea, en 2012 P&G vendió por 2.695 millones de dólares la marca a
la también estadounidense productora de cereales Kellogs.

Algunos datos curiosos sobre la marca:


-La mascota de marca se llama Julius Pringles y fue creada por Louis R. Dixon.
-La marca se adapta culturalmente por lo cual en Asia existen papas con sabor a algas, cangrejo e
incluso camarones.
-No son propiamente papas pues contienen solo un 42% de este ingrediente.
-Frederic Baur, uno de los creadores del producto, pidió que sus cenizas fueran depositadas en un tarro
de Pringles. Murió en 2008 y su deseo fue hecho realidad.
-En los inicios de la marca, las Pringles fueron comercializadas como “Potato Chips Newfangled”.
– Dos productos edición limitada, hamburguesa con queso y taco night, fueron retirados del mercado
en marzo del 2010 como medida de precaución después de que se encontró Salmonella en alimentos
de origen vegetal.

medium packs, and large packs as per the requirement of the consumer. Further, Pringles chips can
be easily stored in the container after opening for later use thus extending the shelf life.

Price:
Pringles always keep in mind competition offering when it looks at product pricing. As compared to
its competitors, Pringles is priced higher as they have a higher perceived taste and quality among
the consumers and better packaging quality. Thus, Pringles follows a premium pricing in its
marketing mix as the costs of producing the chips are low but high price levels are maintained to
encourage favorable perceptions among the consumers in terms of quality of the product and they
appeal to the higher end of the market.

Place:
Pringles was introduced in USA by Kellogg’s. Later on, as it gained popularity and it was introduced
at a global level in various countries. As Pringles is owned by Kellogg's it utilizes the same
distribution network. The product is mass- marketed internationally through a warehouse based
distribution network which involves the products stored in a warehouse after manufacturing after
which it is transported to retailers using a network of distributers to achieve high sales with low
prices as they realize higher service levels and cost efficiencies. Pringles are available in 140
countries through grocery stores, supermarkets, convenience stores, shopping centers,
departmental stores etc. Further they are also offered in various college and school stores as well.

Promotion:
Pringles has always focused on extensive advertising and marketing. The product packaging has
been done based on the flavor of the chips which appeals to the consumers. Pringles are promoted
through advertisements such as TV advertisements, Outdoor advertisements, newspaper and
magazine ads, celebrity endorsements with their value proposition of 'Once you pop, you can’t
stop'. Also, frequent sales promotion takes place through coupons, price reductions, special deals,
free samples etc. The brand also manages its public relations through various event sponsorships
and charity events. Further Pringles also undertakes several interactive campaigns involving the
consumer such as TasteTracks campaign in effort to compete with its competitors such as Lays
which frequently engages its customers. Hence this gives an insight about Pringles marketing mix.

About Pringles:
Pringles is an American potato chip brand owned by Kellogg's which is sold in over 140 countries.
The brand was initially founded in 1967 and marketed by Procter and Gamble in the US but was
later sold to Kellogg's in 2012. Pringles brand originated to address the consumer complaints about
the quality of the chips and the presence of air in the bag. To address the issues, the product was
developed in the form of saddle shaped potato chips which could be consistently stacked on top of
each other. Pringles is the second leading potato chip brand in the US after Lays with a market
share of 9.6%. Its main competitors include PepsiCo subsidiary Frito-Lay, which targets the same
set of customers, Pop chips, Cape Cod Potato Chips etc.
