I. Objectives/Competencies

By the end of the session, the students will be able to:


1. Understand the history of printmaking in the Philippines during pre-hispanic times, the Spanish
occupation and up to the present.
2. Give samples of the different prints from the different historical periods and identify the different
kinds of printmaking techniques.
3. Appreciate and compare the unique characteristics of prints made in the Philippines and the
contemporary prints using different techniques.

II. Subject Matter


TOPIC: PRINTMAKING PROCESS IN THE PHILIPPINES

Materials: pictures of prints, TV, video clips

III. Procedure
A. Review. “Memory Check”

B. Motivation. “Did You Know”


1. Show on screen the early forms of publications in the Philippines done in Woodblock printing.
a. The “Doctrina Christiana en Lengua Espanola y Tagala”, in 1593.

2. Early Filipinos, like those in the West, use their occupation as their last names. If the father is a blacksmith,
he will probably use Panday; a carpenter adopt Anluwage, and so on. Tomas Pinpin, the first Filipino printer
whose occupation is placing the wooden block tiles for printing in a frame that is why he is called Tomas na
“taga-pinpin” in Tagalog or in short Tomas Pinpin. His companion Domingo Loag is “taga-luwag” or the one
who disassembles the frame to allow the arranger to assemble new set of text for printing.

V. Assignment
1. Study “SIMPLE PRINTS: RUBBINGS FROM FOUND OBJECTS”, page 121.
2. Bring various objects that have a flat surface but has varied textures (coins, pendants, keys, alphabet
blocks, corrugated paper), Crayons or charcoal/pencil, absorbent paper or cloth, and bond paper.
