FOREWORD

The theme for the 33rd Annual Indonesian Petroleum Association Convention and Exhibition is “Managing Resources and
Delivering Energy in a Challenging Environment”. Everyone involved in our industry would agree the events that have
occurred over the last twelve months have created a challenging environment for all stakeholders. It is against this backdrop
that the 2009 convention is being held. Since its founding in 1971 the Indonesian Petroleum Association (IPA) has served as
the focal point for bringing together those who are involved and contribute to Indonesia's petroleum industry. IPA's goals
include the fostering of mutual respect between members of the Association, both private and Government; advancing new
ideas; and fostering a spirit of scientific research among the Members of the Association. This year's convention is one means
for IPA to achieve these goals. With the challenges the industry now faces the IPA Convention and its Technical Program are
as important as ever.

The papers selected for this year's convention are as varied as the challenges confronting the petroleum industry. As always,
there is an extensive selection of papers covering geology, geophysics, and formation evaluation. In addition there are papers
in the areas of reservoir engineering, production engineering, and facilities design as well as commercial and safety. All these
papers have been specifically selected from the large number of proposed abstracts because of their quality and broad appeal.
Contributors to this year's convention include oil and gas companies, service companies, government agencies, and universities.
In keeping with the IPA goals there is a selection of papers by students who will one day be the leaders of our industry.

These papers represent the state of the Indonesian petroleum industry today and how the industry is responding to challenge.
It is the IPA's hope that all attendees will be able to learn something from the information presented during the convention and
in so doing be able to use that information to help the industry become more efficient and continue to contribute to the national
well-being of Indonesia.
