ED 215R LESSON PLAN

RATIONALE FOR THE LESSON: Because the students had been reviewing and
learning about poetry, it is important to create fun and engaging activities so students will
be focused and on task while teaching this lesson. I will read a monster poem and
children will create their monster while I read the poem. After this, the children will name
their monster and create an acrostic poem with the name. Reviewing poetry with the
students will refresh their memory and is good practice for them.

OUTCOMES/GOALS:
For the Student: W.1.6. With guidance and support from adults, focus on a topic,
respond to questions and suggestions from peers, and add details to strengthen writing as
needed.

For the Teacher: WI Teaching Standard number 1. Teachers know the subjects they are
teaching. The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the
disciplines she or he teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of
subject matter meaningful for pupils.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: By utilizing ‘I can’ statements, the students become

responsible for their work.

“I can successfully listen and create a monster from the poem that has been read to me.”
“I can create an acrostic poem with the name of my monster.”

ASSESSMENT:

Formative: When introducing the draw-a-rhyme monster story, I will evaluate their
rhyming skills and ask the students to fill in the blanks as successfully as they can.
Summative: By collecting their acrostic poems, I can get a better understanding of how
well they can create an acrostic poem after they create their monster.

STRATGIES FOR STUDENTS OF VARYING LEVELS OF DEVELOPMENT AND

IDENTIFIED LEARNING NEEDS:
I plan on walking around the room when reading the draw-a-rhyme monster story to
make sure students are understanding what is being asked of them.
I will show the students an example of a monster and acrostic poem that I have created
ahead of time so students can visually see what is being asked of them.
I will help any student who needs extra instruction or help with their activity.
This is a creative writing activity and students are given freedom to create a name and
describe their monster through the use of an acrostic poem.
The students will be a given a chance to fill in the blanks out loud and participate in
answering what is being asked of them.
For students who finish early, they can color their monster while waiting for their
classmates to finish.

MATERIALS:
Draw-a-Rhyme Monster Story worksheet
White paper
Pencils
Crayons

TOTAL TIME NEEDED: 30-35 minutes

PROCEDURES: (Explain in detail.)

_____Introduction: After the students read a book about monsters with my co-teacher, they will
go back to their seats and quietly sit as I tell them what we will be doing today sentence and they
will have to fill in the blank with a rhyming word. I will tell the students that for each “fill in the
blank” rhyming word they correctly say, they will have to draw that word on their monster. (For
example, I will say, “When you draw a monster, it is said, you always begin with his head.” The
underlined word will be the word that the students will have to fill in and then they will create a
monster head.)

_____Demonstration: I will introduce my example of the monster and acrostic poem I have
created so the students can get a better understanding of what is being asked of them.

_____Participation: If students have any questions about what is being asked of them, this is the
time to ask if they do not understand the directions. Then I will read the draw-a-rhyme monster
story and students will have the chance to participate and fill in the rhyming word. Students will
also be given a chance to participate and present their monsters and acrostic poems with the rest
of the class after they are completed.

_____Practice: After reading the draw-a-rhyme monster story and after the students create their
monster, they will then give their monster a name. After naming their monster, the students will
create an acrostic poem from their monster’s name. I will explain to them that their poem should
describe their monster and the character traits it has. After they create their poems, the students
can color their monsters. When they students are done creating their monsters, poems, and
coloring their monster in, they will be given a chance to present their monsters and poems.

_____Performance: Students will be free to create their monster in whatever way they want, they
will name their monster and describe it with whatever traits or characteristics they want.
Students will also be free to decorate and color their monster however they like. Students
will not be considered successful, and will not be allowed to decorate and color their
monster, until after they finish their poem.

_____Closure/Recap: When the entire class has completed their monster, poem, and decorating,
we will gather at the reading carpet and share some of the students pieces with everyone else.
