Lesson Plan

Subject: Academic Science Grade: 10

Unit: Climate Change

Date: January 20, 2017 Time: 75 Minutes

Background Information
• What is climate change - description and environmental impacts
• The greenhouse effect - description and environmental impacts
• Basic understanding of global climate changes of temperature, sea levels, severe weather,
precipitation patterns, seasons and ecosystems
• Basic comprehension of climate change in Canada in terms of temperature, precipitation,
lake levels, ecosystems, disease, agriculture, forests and electricity use
• Examples of how the Canadian Government and society are limiting Canada’s impact on
climate change
• Knowing examples of how we can limit our emissions
Learning Goals
• To learn how climate change effects Indigenous peoples
• To understand the importance of learning the effects of climate change on First Nations
Success Criteria
• I know what climate change is and provide current examples of evidence
• I can identify and describe the effects of climate change on Inuit populations
• I understand the value of learning about how climate change effects First Nations
• I will find and research a current human activity (that could lead to climate change) that
impacts Indigenous communities and determine how it effects them and their coping or
combating strategies
Accommodations
English as a Second Language
• EA support, or peer mentor
• Have a document with pictures
Individual Education Plan
• Accommodations only - allowing for time, and number of questions expected for completion
Curriculum Expectations
• Investigate current/potential effects of climate change on natural environments and human
activity
• To outline Canada’s contribution to climate change
• Identify and analyze evidence of climate change
• To explore First Nations, Métis, and Inuit relationships to science-related technologies

Instruction:
Time
25 MIN Minds On
• Brief recap of climate change (what is it and current indications of climate
change) through questions and discussion
• Students will then get into groups and discuss how climate change is impacting
First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities
• Each group will then present their ideas that they wrote on chart paper
40 MIN Action
• Learning how climate change effects Indigenous peoples/communities in
Canada - specifically Inuit peoples in Northern Canada
• Climate change impacts the physical and traditional lifestyles for Inuit people
• Transportation challenges - increased transportation times, cost of transporting
and cost of living
• Decreased water quality and increased water quantity
• Effects of cultural sites - such as loss of cultural sites due to flooding or land
deterioration
• Climate change effects on ice cover - these changes will impact wildlife (polar
bear, seal etc.), and the hunters who hunt these animals for their community
• Video on ice cover- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHjXSE0adnQ
• In groups students will answer the “So What?” question - why should we be
aware of these effects on Inuit communities?
• Throughout the lesson students will be engaged by asking and answering
questions
10 MIN Consolidation
• Students will be given a homework assignment to be shared the next day at the
beginning of class
• Homework assignment - to find one current example of human activity (i.e.
pollution, forestry) that could lead to climate change that is directly impacting
Indigenous peoples and/or their community, explain how it effects these
communities and what strategies are they using to cope or combat these effects
