Safari Menu Activity: Adding and Subtracting Decimals Mini-Lesson – 5E Lesson Plan

Teacher: Ms. Williams

Date: 10/18/2017
Subject area / course / grade level: Mathematics; 5th Grade; Time: 8:55 am to 9:25 am;
regular ladder work from 9:25 am to 10:05am.
Materials:
Safari Menus (21)
Safari Menu Activity Sheets (21)
Math Journals (21; students already have; for scratch work)
Pencils (21)

Colorado State Academic Standards:

Content Area: Mathematics
Standard 1: Number Sense and Operations
2. Formulate, represent, and use algorithms with multi-digit whole numbers and decimals with
flexibility, accuracy, and efficiency.

c. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths. (CCSS:5.NBT.7)

i. Use concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of
operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. (CCSS:5.NBT.7)

Lesson objective(s):
As a mathematician, can I add and subtract decimals to hundredths? (CCSS.M1.2c.ii)

Differentiation strategies to meet diverse learner needs:

- Reading the steps to ELL and slow processing students
- Allow for partner work so stronger writer can write down the work and allows students to
work together to solve the tasks.

ENGAGEMENT
● Teacher will begin by reviewing how to add and subtract decimals from past journal entries.
● Teacher will then ask:
o “How do you think decimals are used in real life?”
o “ Where have you seen decimals outside of school?”

● Teacher will give students 3-5 minutes to have a discussion revolving around the two
questions.
● Teacher will then introduce the Safari Menus.

EXPLORATION
● Students will look over the safari menus to complete the tasks:
o pick menu items
o answer the questions on the sheet (eg. total cost of bill; when you add in tips; etc.)
o show their work in their Math Journals (with labels to show which questions the work
is associated with)
● Once students complete the menu activity and participate in reflection, students will be
asked to continue their Ladder work.

EXPLANATION
● Teacher will introduce the Safari Menus and the task that is associated with the menus.
● Teacher will go over the expectations with students:
o Students must work in pairs (may have one group of three)
o Students must show their work in their math journals to show how they came to their
answers

ELABORATION
● Through conferencing, Students will share what they discussed, what they discovered during
the activity, what was challenging, and what strategies they are using. This would also be
the time for teacher to help clear up any confusion beyond listening in during activity time.

EVALUATION
● Teacher will periodically listen into conversations for the applied vocabulary during group
activity. Teacher will also look for the completion of algorithms and strategies used in
journals to help solve the tasks.
