Vocabulary games

Taboo

A card-based game where you must describe or explain one word without
using 3 other words closely associated with it. A good game for recycling
vocabulary learnt in the past, for word association and for creative description.
You could even make your own cards!

Spelling survivor

A group game where students recite one letter of a given word and pass onto
the next person to continue. Especially good at checking spelling of difficult
words, silent letters and different vowel sounds.

Pelmanism

A fun and adaptable game for checking memory. Make some cards with
vocabulary and pictures (or associated words). Turn cards face down and the
learners take it in turns to pick two cards to overturn. If they match they keep
them. If they don’t, return them. It’s fun and helps test memory! Can be
adapted for different vocabulary such as phrasal verbs, prefixes, synonyms- the
possibilities are endless!

Fly swat

Stop the bus

A team game where students must think of words in 3 categories beginning

with a given letter. For example:

Food burger
Animal badger
Colour blue
Once one person has done, they pass the pen to the next person who adds two
more. Good for collaborative learning and creativity! For added challenge you
could do some language analysis by asking them to think of nouns, verbs and
adjectives.
