1 Introduction
Powerwave Optical Repeater consists of Fiber Base Unit (FBU or MU) and Remote Unit (RU).
The FBU converts and reconverts RF signals to optical signals. The truly modular design of the
FBU ensures a cost efficient solution for any DAS configuration. Configurable with up to 6 fiber
optical boards with WDM as an option, the FBU is intended to feed star and point-to-point
networks of fiber optic repeaters.
RU work as bi-directional on-frequency amplifiers used to fill out uncovered areas in wireless
mobile systems such as base station fringe areas, tunnels, convention centers, airports and business
buildings. It receives, amplifies and transmits signals between a base transceiver station (BTS) and
mobile stations (MS) with both directions being served simultaneously.
2 Installation
2.1 FBU Installation
Below is FBU’s module arrangement and cable connecton of Movistar IBS Project.

Notice:
 Fiber connector in the FBU is FC/APC, and in Movistar IBS Project, the ODF
connector is SC/PC, please use the proper fiber jumper for FBU and ODF connection.
 In Movistar IBS project, the Power Supply Module’s input power is -48VDC, not
16-60VDC in the Datasheet.
 2G and 3G RF input power is better to around 20-36dBm. Output power of NSN
usually is 43dBm, so it’s better for us to use 20 or 15 dB coupler to get the signal.
2.2 RU Installation
Below is Remote Unit (RU)’s component part.
Notice:
 In Movistar IBS project, we use Wideband Radio Head (WRH), it contents 2 band,
1900MHz in the base, and 850MHz in the door.
 Though some sites we ongly use 850, but we also use the FON at base, so supply power
to both base and door. Besides, please change the power module input power (a red
switch) to the suitable voltage (in Ecuador is 110V).
 Don't forget to connet the ground.
 Use corrugated pipe to protect the fiber jumper at the outside of the RU. The fiber
jumper in the picture in a bad example.
3 Configuration
3.1 Preparation for Configuration
We need below：
 USB to Serial Cable & Calbe Driver
 Om-online Software
 Non Port Protected PC (Non Huawei PC)
 RAS Configuration
3.1.1 USB to Serial Driver Installation
Step1: Connect the USB to Serial Cable to your PC, and install the driver.
Step2: Open Windows Device Manger to check which COM is used by the cable, and it’s
better to make it between COM1 to COM9. Remember the COM number and always use the same
USB port in order to get the same COM number. If you use another USB port, the COM number
will change.
3.1.2 Om-online Installation
For WinXP: install OM-Online WB in the disk or download higher version in Powerwave
Website.
For Win7: it’s better to install OM-Online WC, because it supports win7 better.
3.1.3 No Port Protected PC
Huawei Computer has the CPM to block ports. Even you have the USB write and Serial Port right,
the RAS still doesn't work. So use one no port protected PC is necessary to create the RAS.
3.1.4 RAS Configuration
For RAS Configuration, check OM-Online Help Topic for more details. Below is the
configuration for USB to Serial Cable in WinXP. (Notice: For Win7, the Help Topic Tutorial is
not complete. Please reference some missing config in WinXP)
1. Connect PC with the USB to Serial Cable
2. Make a new network connection

( Start > Settings > Network Connections > New Connection Wizard )

In Welcome to the New Connection ... press Next.

In Network Connection Type select Set up an advanced connection.

Press Next.
5.
In Advanced Connection Options select Connect directly to another computer.

Press Next.
6.
In Host or Guest select Guest.

Press Next.
7.
In Connection Name type name of connection to use from OM-Online, for example
Local COM2
This is the Connection name to be accessed from OM-Online.
Press Next.
8.
In Select a Device select the serial port to use for direct connection.
Press Next.
9.
In Connection Availability select Anyone's use.

Press Next.
10.
Press Finish.
11.
In the Connect Local dialog press Properties.
12.
In tab General make sure correct device is selected.

Press Configure.
13.
In Modem Configuration verify maximum speed is 19200

Make sure no hardware features check boxes are checked.
Press OK.
14.
Tab Options.
15.
In tab Security check Advanced and press Settings.

The recommended Advanced security settings is to check only the protocols
PAP, CHAP and MS-CHAP.
Press OK to close this dialog and press Yes to accept the settings
16.
In tab Networking make sure only the two first boxes Internet Protocol and QoS
Packet Scheduler are checked.
Press Settings.
17.
PPP Settings.
Make sure only Enable LCP extensions is checked. Press OK.
18. In tab Networking select Internet Protocol and press Properties:
In Internet Protocol Properties press Advanced to verify Advanced TCP/IP Settings.

Note these settings are important and must be full filled.
19.
In tab General uncheck both Use default gateway on remote computer and Use IP
header compression.
20.
Tab DNS of Advanced TCP/IP Setting.
21.
In tab WINS of Advanced TCP/IP Setting check Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
Press OK to save settings.
22.
Tab Advanced.
When finished with all tabs press OK to save settings.
23. Create a New Port in OM-Online to Check is the RAS Configuration OK

Open OM-Online and follow below steps to create one PPPD Port and you can find
your RAS Connection in RAS Entry Option.
At Point 4, if there is No Option or No Answer, please check above steps again to
build the RAS. If it still not work, maybe the port is blocked.
3.2 Commissioning
3.2.1 IP-Plan
We use IP Repeater Network Configuration Tool to create the IP Network.
For Movistar IBS project, you can open the attached xml file with IP Repeater Network
Configuration Tool as one example. You can find more information about IP Repeater
Network Configuration Tool in OM-Online help topics—IP-Planner.
To create a new repeater network, please follow below steps.

1. The program IP Repeater Network Configuration Tool may be used without
OM-Online for planning new repeater networks.
All repeater networks start with a wire subnet (WLI) as root node. This is the case even
if two FON-units are connected with fiber only.
To create a new network select menu Node > Add > WLI Subnet
This will create the root subnet node:
2. Repeaters or FON-units may be added to this subnet.

To add a FON-unit select menu Node > Add > FON
3. Input fields with yellow background indicate a warning condition.

Enter a name for the FON-unit. Other fields with yellow can be gernerated
automatically after finishing adding Node of the Network.
A fiber subnet may be created with menu Node > Add > FLI Subnet
4. More nodes may be added to the network:
Here yellow background color indicates missing name server addresses.
5. To assign name server addresses first select a target repeater or FON-unit,

second select menu Address > NS > Primary Nameserver
This will display a request dialog, choose All nodes if you want to use the same Name
Server for all nodes.
6. To assign gateway for gateway node, select a gateway node like FON-1,
second select menu Address > Gateway
7. At last, you can save the IP Plan as xml file, and open it again in the future. Or save it as a
PNG file to see the network structure.
3.2.2 Connect to FBU
Connect the serial port in FON.
Use the port in OM-Online to connect into FBU.
After connecting into the FBU, you cans see one FOM unit. Double click and login FOM. There is
no user name and password as default.
3.2.3 IP Configuration of FOM in FBU
Configure its Name and Date and Time in General Settings.
Configure the IP Param in Network.
Tips:
 Select the corresponding Node in IP Repeater Network Configuration Tool, click
Export.
 In OM-Online IP Param, click Import and Set. The software will match the IP
automatically.
3.2.4 IP Configuration of RU
Shut down RU and disconnect two WLI connectors from REP in FON board.
Turn on RU, connect the FON with serial cable and use OM-Online to set the Name, Date
and Time, and IP as the steps of FOM in 2.2.3.
Notice:
For non-gateway equipments like FON in RU, please uncheck Control Station Capability
in Network>FLI>Node Config.
Connect the REPs in base and door with serial cable. Use OM-Online to set the Name, Date
and Time, and IP.
Finishing the 3 nodes’ IP configurations, shut down the RU and connect the WLI cables in
FON board. Then turn on again and wait the equipment to find each other.
About 5 minutes, if all the IP and Cables are correct, you can connect the RU, and find all the
nodes in network including the FBU.
Notice: Sometimes you can’t see the network if waiting time is not long enough. You can
disconnect OM-Online and wait 5 minutes more and try again. Besides, you can take a look
at RU’s FON>Network>FLI>Network to check the fiber connection of FBU and RU. And
check the WLI connection of RU in Network>WLI>Network.
3.2.5 Check Optical Power in FOM and FON
Check the Receiver status and Receiver level in Opto>Status of FOM and FON.
Notice:
 Optical RX Target = ≥ -6dBm; ≤ +1 dBm
 Adjust laser power – Low or High power
▪ Set to Low if optical RX level is ≥ +1 dBm
▪ If ≤ -6dBm, confirm if this is expected RX level or troubleshoot fiber. Set to
High
 If the RX level is less than -12dBm, you should try to improve the fiber connection.
Connect again, change the fiber, clean the fiber connector, etc.
 In default, Rx Warning level is -12dBm. Sometimes the RX level is -8dBm and Status is
Error. Because the error will only cease automatically when the RX level is more than
-6dBm. This RX level is usable even it’s not good. Reset alarm to make the Receiver
Status return OK.
3.2.6 Set DL Gain and Get Desired Power
 Set DL Gain
▪ Login in REP, WBA 1>Parameter.
▪ Set Downlink Gain from low like 50dB.
▪ Check Active of Downlink.
 Get Desired Power
▪ Check RH output power in Status DL.
▪ Adjust DL Gain to make output power to achieve desired level.
▪ Measure or calculate RU’s output and adjust DL gain to confirm unit will operate
at full traffic load without going into AGC.
Notice: Don’t set the DL Gain to Max at the first time of commissioning.
3.2.7 Set UL Gain and Balance UL&DL
 Target = “Unity gain” for DL and UL paths.
▪ Balanced (or close to balanced) system gain between UL and DL paths.
 Start by setting UL gain 10dB down from DL gain, and check Active of UL.
▪ No atten in UL path prior to amplification and fiber conversion.
▪ Accommodate UL signal variations.
 Next set corresponding FBU RX Attenuation to 10dB.
 Observe any potential difference between UL and DL optical loss and adjust head end RX
Attenuation or AR/ALR UL gain to compensate.
 Be aware of any external attenuators or other gain effecting components that may create
an imbalance between the UL and DL paths.
At last, monitor the status of UL&DL for a while and check is there any alarm in Testpiont >
WBA 1. And it’s better to make some call test to check is there any call drops or call difficulty.
3.3 ISG Maintenance Configuration
3.3.1 Connect to the ISG module.
Connect to the Local Lan port on RMM with LAN cable.
Wait for the Local Lan in you computer get the IP.
Enter 192.168.47.10 in your IE and you will see the login dialog.
Username: Level3
Password: admin22
Click Login and you will see the web page of ISG
3.3.2 Configure ISG and Repeater to active ISG Function
Follow below PDF to configure the ISG with IE, and configure all the Repeater Nodes with
OM-Online. In Movistar IBS Project, only FOM is the Gateway Node, others like FON and REP
is Non-Gateway Node.

Finish above setting, you can use Connect To Repeater option to login repeaters on Web
terminal.
Besides, you can access with OM-Online by LAN cable.
1. Create a new PPPD port in OM-Online.
2. Enter the ISG IP address in the CommServer Host and finish.
3. Now you can access to repeaters with LAN cable in OM-Online.
3.3.3 Connect ISG to GPRS network
Requirements:
 A mezzanine card with a Wavecom GPRS module installed on the ISG board.
 Packet Data User, Packet Data Password and Access Point Name (obtained from the network
operator).
 A SIM card unprotected by a PIN
NOTE: If the SIM card is protected by a PIN, place the SIM card in a cell phone and follow the
instructions provided by the cell phone manufacturer to deactivate the PIN.
1. In the Mode of Operation Section, select Packet Switched Data and click Set.
2. In the Network Type section, click GPRS. The GPRS Configuration section will appear.
3. Enter the user name, password, and the Access Point name (obtained from the network
operator).
4. Click the Set button, then click the Restart ISG button.
After the Restart, you will see the GPRS IP of ISG.
