Outcome of workshop
General Recommendations

 Enthusiastic recommendation regarding establishment of center.

 Promomting a culture of dependability engineering across India, supporting Start-ups,
Local Engineering Colleges, MSMEs, etc.
 Industry support is possible in every respect.
 Hence, it is proposed that the Institute should go for establishing the center of
dependability engineering.

Programme Recommendations

 Possibility of fully sponsored M.Tech programs on various aspects of Dependability

Engineering, very much exists.
 An add on masters level program may be provided to students with thorough domain
knowledge in the form of IDD programs.
 There may be a provision to have training and certification programmes for
B.Tech/M.Tech students providing them industrial exposure.
 There can be national/international collaboration programmes, where academic
institutions and industries can share their knowledge
 There can be micro-specialisation courses on Reliability Analysis, Probabilistic Risk
Assessment, Design for Dependability etc.

Research Recommendations

 Research collaboration on safety, security, usability, fault tolerance, reliability and

availability are important and necessary requirements of the industry today.
 Joint PhD programs under joint supervision on industry identified problem are the real
need of present times.
 Collaborative R & D projects need to be taken up to provide solution to industrial
problems.
 The possible research areas of Dependability Engineering could be Reliability
Engineering (Human, Structural, Software, Component, System, Interfaces), Safety
Engineering, Risk Analysis (Qualitative, Semi Qualitative, Oil and Gas), Failure
Analysis, Availability Engineering, Security Engineering, Maintainability Engineering,
External Event Risk Analysis, Dynamic Risk Analysis (combining simulation and
mechanistic models), Data Collection techniques, Mathematical Modelling,
Dependability issues in Network/Distributed Systems etc.
 There can be a provision for consultancy services with private/public/Govt industry.
 Industry-Academia joint working group may collaboratively take up Safety Studies.

Infrastructure and Support Recommendations

 There can be a provision for virtual classrooms and Guest Speakers from industries and
other academic institutions can be invited
 There can be a provision to establish the necessary facilities (Labs, infrastructure, etc) in
concurrence with industry.
 DIH, DIC, MCIIE may also be involved for providing appreciation of industrial R & D
problems.
 Support may be provided by various Government Departments/Agencies (BRNS, DST
etc) and Private organizations (Software Industries, Manufacturing industries, etc) for
research funding.
 Support from LDRA:
o 90% discount on commercial prices to IIT (BHU) for software licenses (academic
use).
o 2 days FDP can be conducted in association with IIT (BHU) for nearby
Engineering Colleges and industry in general.
o Willing to work with IIT (BHU) in running a short-term course on Secure Coding
Standards for Safety Critical Embedded Systems. Certification may be provided
by IIT (BHU) or some professional organization.

Priorities of government Departments and ministries that may support this

center.
The center, so proposed, may be supported by various government departments/ministries
including that of Mines, Railways, Aviation, Atomic Energy, Heavy Industry and other
organizations (like BARC, ISRO, DRDO, STQC under Miety (Ministry of Electronics and IT),
IDRBT/RBI, DST, DBT, NTRO, WESEE (Navy), IRISET, RDSO etc).
