Chapters 3.2 to 3.5 describe the procedure with a standard dosing head DS3600. Additional
information for the procedure with a fine dosing unit DS3601 can be found in ch. 4.
Work with other hazardous substances should only be carried out by trained personnel and
under observance of the safety information contained in the relevant safety data sheets.
Never fill the syringe with more liquid than is necessary for the planned measurement. Do
not keep hazardous substance residues in the syringe, but empty them out and dispose of
them and the syringe in accordance with local regulations.
After the measurement take up the deposited hazardous substances on suitable tissues.
Samples that are to be used again after the measurement must be cleaned with a suitable
solvent.
2. Turn the dosing/adjusting wheel to bring the syringe plunger right to the bottom.
4. Draw up the liquid into the syringe by turning the dosing wheel.
Plunger bridge
5. Remove the air from the syringe by inverting the dosing unit so that the needle faces up and
tap the syringe walls so that any adherent air bubbles detach and rise up. Turn the syringe
plunger up to force out the air.
! When the air is forced out some liquid will also escape from the syringe. Take this up
with a suitable tissue.
Insertion
Let the syringe slip into the opening with the plunger bridge pointing to the clamping
spring.
Press down the dosing head until the clamping spring clicks into position and is located
above the dosing head.
Removal
Pull back the clamping spring and lift the dosing head out of the guide.
! If drops have already been deposited on a sample then avoid contacting these drops with
the bottom of the MobileDrop, as this could contaminate the prisms and – with unsuitable
liquids – even damage them.
1. Connect MobileDrop to a USB connection of the computer. Start the ADVANCE software.
2. Hold the MobileDrop as shown in the illustration so that your hand grips the curved hand
grip and your index and middle fingers lie on the two dosing wheels.
3. Press the

! The contact angle measurement reacts very sensitively to contamination on the surface. Do
not touch the sample with your fingers.
! Surface irregularities will result in poor contact angle reproducibility. Avoid drop deposition
at sample positions with increased inhomogeneity. Increase the total number of drops for
inhomogeneous samples.
A laser pointer is built in as a positioning guide in order to deposit a drop exactly at a particular
position.

WARNING
Risk of vision impairment by laser beam
If the laser beam is pointed directly at your eye the retina could be damaged in that eye with
resulting blindness.
Never look directly into the laser beam. If the beam accidentally contacts your eye do not
suppress the eyelid reflex, but close the eye.
Never remove the instrument from the surface while the laser is still lit up. The instrument
must always have at least one edge on the surface.
Procedure
1. Tilt the instrument so that it lies on the front edge of the handle (deposition side) and the
rear edge of the sample rest.
Target position
3. Move the instrument about without lifting it up until the point of light is on the required
drop deposition position.
Light point
4. Tilt the instrument back over the edge until the sample rest lies flat on the sample. Do not
rotate or displace the instrument during this procedure.
For safety reasons the laser pointer switches off automatically after some time. It can be
switched on again by pressing the button again.
The light point cannot be seen on reflecting surfaces. For this reason, and for safety reasons,
the positioning guide must not be used on reflecting surfaces.
Plunger
bridge
Loosen the screws alternately as otherwise the plunger bridge could be tilted.
2. Pull the plunger out of the syringe (the last piece requires a little force) and remove the
syringe from the dosing head.
As an alternative, the plunger bridge can be removed completely so that the syringe can
be removed with the plunger still inserted.
3. Take the new syringe out of the packaging and pull out the plunger.
4. Insert the bottom edge of the syringe sleeve in the slit of the dosing head.
Slit
5. Insert the plunger and rotate it so that the profile engages in the groove of the plunger
bridge.
6. Tighten up the two screws alternately. Do not tighten them up too much; the bridge should
only press the plunger down lightly. Check that the plunger moves when the
dosing/adjustment wheel is rotated. At the same time click-points should be felt as slight
resistances during rotation. If the dosing/adjustment wheel is too hard-going then loosen
the plunger bridge screws slightly.
7. Attach a needle to the syringe. Press it on firmly as otherwise it could easily fall off and
remain in the guide of the MobileDrop.
3.6 Cleaning
! Do not use ketones (e.g. acetone), alcohols (e.g. ethanol), esters (e.g. acetic acid ethyl ester)
or aromatic solvents (e.g. toluene) for cleaning purposes. We recommend the use of clean
cleanser’s solvent for removing fatty residues.
A list showing the resistance of the prisms to various classes of substances can be found in
the Annex on p. 28.
With water-soluble contaminants rinse the guide channel thoroughly with distilled water and
let it dry in the air.
With organic contaminants that are insoluble in water rinse the guide channel with a suitable
solvent (e.g. cleanser’s solvent) and let it dry in the air.
! The prisms are very sensitive. Do not touch them with hard objects. For cleaning use soft,
lint-free cotton swabs.
Clean the bottom with cotton swabs moistened with cleaner’s solvent.
Also clean the prisms with cotton swabs moistened with cleaner’s solvent without applying
pressure.
HT foot
! The time of contact between the hot surface and the foot must not exceed five seconds.
Observe a waiting period of at least ten seconds between measurements.
The boiling point of test liquids used must exceed the temperature of the surface.
Thimble

2. Push the piston down as far as possible. Hold the needle in a container with the test liquid.
Allow the piston to slide back so that the liquid is drawn into the syringe.
4. Hold the syringe with the needle upwards and tap the wall of the syringe so that any air
bubbles sticking to it detach and rise to the top.
5. Insert the bottom edge of the syringe about half way into the recess in the fine dosing unit.
6. Push the syringe piston slowly up until it fits into the piston guide. Push the bottom edge
into the recess as far as the stop.
! If the test liquid is a hazardous substance, catch any fluid escaping in this and in the
following step with a cloth.
7. Turn the thimble until its edge is in line with the top graduation of the barrel (13 mm) and
the 0 scale mark forms an extension of the long middle line.

1 graduation 0.175 l
5 graduations 0.875 l
10 graduations 1.75 l

The set consists of three holders with inserted glass plates on which drop shapes with contact
angles of 30°, 60° und 120° have been applied lithographically.
During the calibration the optical components of the MobileDrop and the image evaluation
of the software are checked to see with which accuracy the contact angle of a calculated
drop shape is measured.
6.1.1 Versions
The shapes have been calculated by using the Young-Laplace equation, which provides the most
accurate geometrical description of real drop shapes (further information Appendix p.29). This
is why the test measurement must also made using the Young-Laplace method.
6.1.3 Accuracy
The following information describes the optical precision of the standards themselves, not
the accuracy of the drop shape analysis carried out by using KRÜSS measuring tools.
Standard Accuracy
30° ±0,09°
60° ±0,07°
120 ±0,04°
6.2 Handling
! Only touch the stands of the standards; never touch the glass surface.
! The standards must not come into contact with sharp-edged objects.
! Never heat the standards above 40°C, as otherwise the drop shapes themselves could be
distorted.
Check the standards from time to time (depending on how frequently they are used) for
scratches or other damage.
standard foot
HT foot
1. Use the wrench supplied with the MobileDrop to unscrew the four screws that fasten the HT
foot to the MobileDrop.
The calibration is made using ten single measurements on each standard. In order to ensure
that the measurements are meaningful, the complete measuring sequence is repeated for
each individual value:
Set up and align instrument (focus)Adjust brightnessCarry out measurement.
The longer side of the MobileDrop base is touching the left or right-hand edge of the
holder.
5. Adjust the brightness so that the drop image has a high contrast and the grey area in the
background is only weakly visible.
The grey area in the background is produced by the small light gap between the prism
and the surface and does not interfere with the measurement if the brightness is
adequate.
7. Repeat steps 3 to 5 until the procedure is finished and 10 measured values have been
obtained.
Check that the results are within the tolerance range given for the standard.
Tolerance
Standard
Max. variation of mean value
from nominal value
30° ±1°
60° ±1°
120° ±1°
If the tolerance has been exceeded for one of the standards you should check the quality of
the video image (sharpness, illumination) and correct it if necessary. If the result is still
outside the tolerance limits please contact us.
6.6 Cleaning
! Do not clean the standards with rough or linting cloths or with hard brushes.
If the glass surface is contaminated (e.g. by fingerprints) clean it with a cotton-wool tip
soaked with a solvent (e.g. isopropanol) and let the solvent vaporize.

(p = Differential pressure between inside and outside of drop;
= surface tension;
r1 and r2 = radii of curvature.)
As not only the surface tension, but also the weight of a drop determines its shape, predefined
values for the density of the liquid and the acceleration due to gravity are used for calculating
the shapes of the standards.
The resulting shape of the curve obtained from the Young-Laplace equation is intersected by a
horizontal line. The contact angle is the angle between the horizontal line and the drop shape at
both points of intersection.

The warranty claim is void if changes on the product are performed by the customer or a third
party without prior consultation of KRÜSS GmbH, which go beyond the activities described in
the manual. This also applies to repair work, which was independently performed or carried out
by a third party.
