The main source of slaughterhouse wastewater is the feces, urine, blood, fat, carcasses, and non-

digested food in the intestines of the slaughtered animals, the production leftovers, and the cleaning of
the facilities. They usually contain high levels of organics and nutrients, typically measured as
biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), total
suspended solids (TSS), total nitrogen (TN), and phosphorus (TP). Slaughterhouse effluents are
considered detrimental worldwide due to its complex composition of fats, proteins, and fibers, as well as
the presence of organics, nutrients, pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms, detergents and
disinfectants used for cleaning activities, and pharmaceuticals for veterinary purposes. Therefore, some
solutions must be done in order to cater this problem. This project will determine the performance of
DAF and SBR in term of solid and organic removal as well as achieving the objectives which are
determining the physio-chemical characteristics of poultry slaughterhouse wastewater, comparing the
effluent quality with the Standard B : Industrial Effluent, 2009 and assessing the performance of
integrated DAF and aerated SBR in term of solid and organic removal. Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is a
method for separating and removing suspended solids from liquid based on changes in the solubility of
gas as pressure varies while the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) is a fill-and draw activated sludge
system for wastewater treatment. SBR are uniquely suited for wastewater treatment applications
characterized by low or intermittent flow conditions. Besides that, this project is expected to fluctuate
the characteristics of influent from one sampling to another sampling , to produce an effluent quality
that is almost complying the Standard B: Industrial Effluent and to decrease the percentage of organic
removal by less than 50% from DAF and excellent from aerobic SBR effluent.

The title of this project is SOLID AND CARBONACEOUS ORGANIC REMOVAL FROM POULTRY
SLAUGHTERHOUSE WASTEWATER BY INTEGRATED DAF AND AERATED SBR. This project is categorized as
a research project on water and environmental engineering field. Firstly, I would like to express my
gratitude to my final year project's supervisor, Dr Roslinda Binti Seswoya for assisting and advising me
throughout the whole process of this project. The objectives for conducting this project are to
determine the physio-chemical characteristics of poultry slaughterhouse wastewater, to compare the
effluent quality with the Standard B: Industrial Effluent, 2009 and to assess the performance of
integrated DAF and aerated SBR in terms of solid and organic removal. Besides that, this project will also
measure the characterization of the influent and effluent sample from each unit in the existing poultry
slaughterhouse plant as well as determining the values of Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Chemical
Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) following the established method to be
used as a comparison with the Standard B: Industrial Effluent, 2009. In addition, this project is expected
to fluctuate the characteristics of influent from one sampling to another sampling, to produce an
effluent quality that is almost complying the Standard B: Industrial Effluent and to decrease the
percentage of organic removal by less than 50% from DAF and excellent from aerobic SBR effluent.
Eventually, this project will be useful for anybody as future references regarding the performance and
effectiveness of DAF and SBR as alternative methods in wastewater treatment.

Wastewater emerging from poultry technical slaughterhouse is characterized by its high degree of
pollution in terms of organic content. This causes a rise in organic load disposes to wastewater
treatment plants and thereby decrease it efficiency. Therefore, it is important to design the alternative
methods to effectively remove the solid and carbonaceous organics, increase the rate of activation of
microorganisms, reduce the amount of sludge and improve the efficiency of wastewater treatment
plant. So, this project will determine the physio-chemical characteristics of poultry slaughterhouse
wastewater, comparing the effluent quality with the Standard B: Industrial Effluent, 2009 and also
assessing the performance of integrated DAF and aerated SBR in terms of solid and carbonaceous
organic removal.
