TyphoonbFrank was the worst flooding event experience by the City of Iloilo (June 18-23, 2008), affecting 80%
of the area in terms of the following damages:
● strong winds and heavy rain caused the rivers to overflow ● brought flash flood in the entire Jaro District
and brought flood waters 5 feet deep or more ● heavy rainfall brought run-off water from the water-
● 152 out of 180 barangays were flooded shed to Iloilo City (195 to 234 million cubic meters
● 261,000 households were affected ● submerged/destroyed of rice buffer stocks in NFA
warehouse

Plaza Libertad formerly “PLAZA ALFONSO XII” where the Philippine flag was raised in triumph after the
Spaniards surrendered Iloilo, their last capital in the Philippines on December 25, 1898
La Villa De Arroyo 6 kms. Southwest of Iloilo City proper; 2nd capital of the Alcaldia of Panay;first Spanish
settlement in Panay to be attacked in 1588 by the English privateer Sir Thomas Cavendish,
third circum navigator of the world.
Jaro District Old colonial houses of sugar barons and Hispano-Filipino house of the elite still stand; seat
of Catholicism in Western Visayas.
Jaro Belfry The belt tower of the “New Cathedral” wa the former bell tower of the Jaro Church built by
Fray Llanos in 1826-1837. One of the few belfries in the country that stans apart from the
church. It was ruined by 1948 earthquake and restored by the Iloilo City Government during
the last decade of the 1900s.
Jaro Cathedral The first and only cathedral In Panay built in 1864. It was inaugurated on February 2, 1874,
the feast day of Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria. It is one major example of a colonial
church that has undergone transformations after the second World War. One of its high
points in Panay’s history was the visit of Pope John Paul II, conducting a mass in 1982.
Visitors can go up to a kind of veranda or balcony at the front of the Jaro Cathedral where
an icon of a Madonna and child, the approximated to be life size, is situated. Catholic
devotees believed that the image is miraculous. Over the years, the icon is believed to have
grown in size, and when it could no longer fit the former niche, it had to be brought down,
hence its current location.
Jaro Evangelical Church The first Baptist Church in the Philippines.
Molo District Athens of the Philippines; has produced many intellectual and political leaders; 1 chief
justice (Ramon Avanceña), 8 senators, 7 governors, 8 revolutionary generals, 10 legislators
and many cabinet members.
Arroyo Fountain Kilometer zero; constructed in 1927 named after Senator Jose Maria Arroyo, grandfather of

Arevalo Church Home of the 3rd oldest Sto. Niño image. There are only three original image of the child
Jesus in th whole archipelago. The oldest is found in Cebu, which was discovered by
Legaspi in 1565, 2nd in Tondo Church found in 1572, and the 3rd in Arevalo.
JM Basa Street Formerly called “Calle Real”; presently known as the Cultural Heritage Zone, declared as
such because of the existing abundance of heritage buildings.
Muelle Loney Port of Iloilo named after British Nicholas Loney, “Father of Philippine Sugar Industry”;
Nicholas Loney Monument Erected in honor of Nicholas Loney, Father of Sugar Industry”’ he could easily be identified
as the “architect of Iloilo’s progress being responsible for uplifting its economy from a less
promising textile trade to a booming sugar business.
Muelle-Loney-a street in the Iloilo waterfront is one reminder of Loney’s progressive
enterprise.
Fort San Pedro Fort San Pedro or formerly “real Fuerza de Iloilo” was completed in 1616 all made of stone
with good bulwarks and arsenal that were surrounded by big cannons. Quadrilateral in
shape and measured 60 by 60 meters. The walls were composed of cut outs of Guimaras
rocks and coral stones from along the Panay Coast. Fort San Pedro was built to protect the
city from invaders that threatened Iloilo such as Dutch and Moro pirates. The disrepair of

the fort started in the early 20th century and was totally destroyed during World War II.
Baluarte Elementary School Repudetly known as the first public elementary school in the Philippines. It was founded in
1905 in Baluarte, Molo, and Iloilo by Rosendo Mejica, an Ilonggo honored by the Iloilo Press
Club as the “Dean of Visayan Journalist” and of the Iloilo Council as the “Dean of Municipal
Councilors of Iloilo”. The school had produced eminent people, Amongits graduates atre
former Congressman, Senator and Mayor of Iloilo City.
Balantang Memorial Cemetery A national shrine located in Balantang, Jaro, Iloillo City. The only military cemetery establish
outside Metro Manila. The bloodiest battle of the guerillla forces of Col. Macario Peralta, Jr
had occurred in these hollowed grounds of Balantang and vicinity from February 6 up to the
liberation of Iloilo City on March 20, 1945.
Memorial Cemetery Museum Located in Balantang, Jaro, and Iloilo City where WWII vintage firearms, submachine guns
and 81 mortars are displayed; photographs and situation maps depicting historical events
are likewise exhibited.
General Macario Peralta, Jr. Statue & Park Now known as Freedom Park, in honor of one of the bravest guerrilla fighters.
Ayala Land Techno The construction of Ayala’s Iloilo Techno Hub, a commercial development by Ayala Land,
has already started. The complex is located in Riverside Boardwalk (near Smallville) and is
envisioned to address Iloilo City’s lack of Business Process Outsourcing (PBO) spaces,
which one of the reasons why Iloilo City is behind other cities in the Philippines in attracting
investments from call center companies despite its competitive manpower advantage. The
P1B development will feature three buildings; the first of whcich will be completed on the
first quarter of 2011. Ayala Techno Hub will also have spaces for restaurants and retail
shops.
PlazuelA De Iloilo: Florete’s Mall Strip Owner is Mr. Rogelio Florete, the man behind Bombo Radyo Philippines and Queen Bank
is developing a mall strip for retails and BPO’s.
The establishment is a Spanish-Italian styled building designed by the most notable Palafox
and associates who are tasked to do the Iloilo City urban planning. It is located along
Diversion Road at the Old Nes n’ Tats Restaurant besides SM City Iloilo that will really
compliment and boost the shopping and dining potential of the area.

Magdalena G. Jaladoni Historical Shrine The house was built around 1950’s; it is generally made of concrete and wood featuring
arch windows with panes decorated with transparent colored glasses. The most notable
features of the house designed by Magdalena Jalandoni herself with the help of Dominador
Asong who drew up the plan. The tower like structure housing the chapel-indicative of a
strong and religious character of the great Ilonggo novelist. Contains collections of
Magdalena Jalandoni’s works, the 1st Republic Cultural Heritage awardee in Literature in
1969. Magdalena had a different man in mind to marry. He must not only be a very
handsome man but he must also possess the soul of an artist. The only person who
approached her ideal man was the hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.
Museo Iloilo and Antique Collections Repository of Iloilo’s Cultural Heritage. Carbon-14 dated fossils, shells and rocks, klaked
tools, native pottery, ornamented teeth, jewelry, secondary burial coffin, underwater relics,
coins, sculptures, silver crafts, gallery rare pictures and art pieces by Ilonggo artists on
display.
Rosendo Mejica Museum Repository of valuable memorabilia, social and cultural literature in Hiligaynon, English and
Spanish dating from the last quarterof the 19th century to the 6th decade of the 20th century.
Molo Church The church is known to be the most beautiful in the whole Western Visayas. It is also
affectionately known as the “Women Church” because of the sixteen nearly life-size images
of female saints occupying the columns on either side of the church’s center aisle.
Construction of the church began in 1831 under the administration of Rev. Pablo Montaño
and completed under that of Rev. Agapito Buenaflor. The whole structure is supported by
posts of “ancient” designs at several areas. The church was famous for paintings of biblical
characters during the last half of the 19 the century that it prompted Dr. Jose Rizal, our
national hero, to visit.
The Molo façade is lofty with a neo-classical elegance. Gothicized in some of its details, the
two-storey façade is composed of the twin belfries in mind, thus, projecting effectively the
vertical orientation of the structure.

Nelly Garden Built in 1928 and was commissioned by the philanthropist and statesman. Don Vicente
Lopez y Villanueva together with his wife, Doña Elena Hofilena y Javelona. Before they built
Nelly Garden, the couple lived near the Cathedral, but in constant noise prompted Doña
Elena ask her husband to quitter location where she could also indulge in her passion for
flowers and gardening. A four hectares of land purchased for 1 peso per square meter from
national heroine Patrocinio Gamboa, who was also a very close friend of Doña Elena
Engineer Don Mariano Salas motif of the architecture is Classical Cirinthian, but already
with touches of Art Deco. The edifice is constructed of reinforced concrete all throughout
the two storeys with interiors of line Philippine hardwood. It was named after their eldest
daughter Nelly and up to the present.
Casa Mariquit Two century old house, considered one of the oldest existing houses in Iloilo and where the
Javellana Family once resided. One of the family members, Maria Mariquit Javellana lived
there with her husband,the former Vice President of the Philippines, Fernando Lopez, Sr.
Lopez Boathouse Mansion A four-storey white mansion owned by Eugenio H. Lopez. The name “Boathouse” was
given by his children. It has been called “Boathouse” bacuase it shares distinct features
with a boat. According to Oscar Lopez, the house looks like a battleship complete with
portholes. The long veranda of the house can be compared to the viewing deck of the boat.
The tower goes up to the Fourth floor viewing deck. The mansion is a “modern affair,
sleekly done in an art deco style” designed by Architect Fernando Ocampo Sr. located in
Iloilo.
Sanson-Montinola Antilllan House Noted as a typical example of Antillan Architecture, the house is “one of the best preserved
houses in Jaro”. Though presently looking unkept because of the weeds surrounding it, the
house still maintains its elegant appearance. The house is situated adjacent to the campus
of the Colegio de San Jose E. Lopez St., Jaro. Owned by Herminia Montinola, the house
sits on a sprawling property extending up to the Commission Civil road. The façade of the
house has a projecting portion which, in the upper floor, serves as part of the living room,
and in the lower floor, serves as vestibular area for the main entrance. There are
decorations of carved wood, a Spanish influence. This sometimes serves as venues for
fashion shows and other related events.
Graciano Lopez Jaena Shrine Located at cor. Lopez Jaena-Fajardo Sts., Jaro, Iloilo City; birthplace of Graciano Lopez
Jaena, founder of ‘La Solidaridad’publication.
Camiña Balay Nga Bato Formerly Avanceña House at #20 Osmeña St., Arevalo built around 1860’s; it served as
general headquarters of the Filipino revolutionaries against the Spanish and American
Government.
Villanueva House One of the heritage houses located at Bonifacio Drive Iloilo City; constructed in 1928 and
was originally owned by Julio Ledesma. The engineer was Eusebio Canto Villanueva, the
present owner. The house is a two-storey building made of narra wood, galvanized iron and
concrete.
It was that Julio Ledesma’s family owed much money to a Spaniard named Manuel
Galalas. Hence, when their lives prospered, they decide to give the house to Galalas as
gratitude. It did not take long when the Spaniard decided to sell the house. Villanueva took
interest in the offer and bought the house at a reasonable price.
Used as Japanese headquarters during the WWII where the basement was used as a
torture chamber for Filipinos caught during the war.
Juan Ledesma House A heritage house in a 5,000 square meter lot at Bonifacio Drive, built in 1930 at estimated
cost of Php 80,000. A two-storey building with basement. Ther are four big rooms with bath
tub in the second floor while the ground floor was utilized as iving and dining rooms and
kitchen. The building was occupied by the Japanese army during the war. And after the
war, the hose was again used by the U.S. Army is its headquarters.
The house is rumored to be haunted; hence no occupants dare to stay long. It was in 1990,
the interior was renovated and transformed into a hotel with the name “The Castle”
Colegio de San Jose One of the oldest existing educational institutions in the province. It is located at E. Lopez
St. Jaro, Iloilo City. It was the first Catholic School for girls in Western Visayas. On May 1,
1872 the Daughters of Charity opened a school to provide Chiristian Education for young
girls. Formerly situated in a small fenced lot on an ordinary house, and later expanded to its
recent site.
Iloilo National High School Century old institution established in 1902 through American efforts. The school was
housed in a two-storey buiding across the street from the Provincial Capitol before it
transferred to its present site in La Paz on land donated by Don Francisco Habana
Jalandoni in 1906. In 1904 was a significant year in that, for the first time, Filipino students
were sent as government pensionados or scholars to the United States.

Central Philippine University One of the largest institutions in the Visayas, located in the district of Jaro. It was founded by
American Baptist missionaries in 1905.Its original name was Jaro Industrial School.The 24-
hectare campus, with more than 30 buildings used for classrooms and support facilities. It
has remained true to its mission as a Christian institution whose motto is Scientia et Fides
(Knowledge and Faith).The beautifully landscaped campus had been declared a tourist
destination by the local tourism authority. The city council mentioned CPU as home to the
largest library in Western Visayas, the Henry Luce III Library, with more than 200,000
volumes. A non-stock, non-profit Christian institution of higher learning in Iloilo City.
St. Vincente Ferrer Seminary The 5th and the last seminary founded during Spanish regime by the Augustinian fathers.
The Re. Mariano Cuartero, the first bishop of Jaro, founded the seminary in 1869.For the
purpose of training priests for the different parishes which at that time were almost entirely
under the Augustinian friars. Bishop Cuartero invited the Vicentian Fathers of the province
of Madrid, Spain to organize and direct the Jaro Seminary. The construction of the
seminary began on march 11, 1871 under the direction of fr. Aniceto Gonzales, one of the
pioneer Vicentian priests, who acted as foreman. The place of the construction was fast
due to enthusiasm of the Fathers and the seminarians who joined the workers during their
free time. They carried by hand the bricks from the river bank, where the banks or wooden
boats unloaded them to the place work. Even Bishop Cuartero as seen many a time
carrying bricks to construction site. The building was completed in November 1874.
Historical Marker on Patrocinio Gamboa This was erected for her at Jaro Plaza to remind the Ilonggos for her heroic deed. On
November 28, 1898, the saga of her courage and patriotism took place when she brought
to Sta. Barbara, Iloilo the Philippine flag, the first hoisted outside in Luzon, and a saber foe
General Martin Delgado. She outsmarted the casadores who were posted along the road to
Sta. Barbara to inspect travelers.
UP in the Visayas Iloilo City Campus Currently the main building of the campus, this historical building is actually the old city hall
of Iloilo City. Built more than a decade before the Second World War, this building served
the city of Iloilo as its city hall from 1936 till the 50s. The city government donated the
building to the university and is still used up to this day.
University of San Agustin Augustinians friars from Spain belonging to the Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus of
the4 Philippines founded the University of San Agustin on 1904. It was raised into a
university status on March 1, 1953.The Spanish Augustinians were the first Christian
missionaries of any religious order to enter the Philippines and begin its conversion to
Catholicism. The motto of the privately-owned university is Virtus it Scientia; The University
is named in honor of fourth century saint Augustine of Hippo. On February 5, 1917, it was
formally incorporated under thename Colegio de San Agustin de Iloilo.
Saint Paul University and Hospital The university was founded in 1907. It is one of 42 schools owned, managed, and operated
by the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres in the Philippines. The university was previously a
women’s college until it finally went co-ed to accommodate male students from the male
college of Ateneo de Tuguegarao that closed down.
The hospital was established in 1909 by the four sisters- Sr. Donatine, Sr. Antoine, Sr.
Augustine, Sr. Felix. Now, it has become one of the biggest and famous hospitals in the
metropolis.
Old Provincial Capitol The capitol building in Iloilo referred to as “Casa Real” or the Royal House during the
Spanish times was built in 1840. The “Casa Real” was the residence of the alcalde-mayor
or governor, the highest Spanish official in Iloilo.
The architectural charater of the Capitol is that of Electricism. The front colonnade
composed of pillars is in style of the Greek-Roman.Doric order, visually enhanced by
entasis, a technique curving the column shafts.
Iloilo Freedom Grand Stand Constructed in 1953 immediately after Cong. Rodolfo Ganzon introduced the Iloilo Freedom
Bill during the same year.
This historic place in Iloilo City has witnessed many events and gathering social, cultural
and political was renovated in 2003 under the administration of Mayor Jerry P. Treñas. The
renovation of the Freedom Grandstand was funded by CDF of Sen. John Henry R. Osmena
through the efforts of the Mayor and Congressman.
A large outdoor stage located along Iznart St., in Downtown Iloilo. Freedom Grandstand is
the main judging area during the annual Dinagyang Festival.

Sinamay Dealer, Osmeña St., Arevalo, Iloilo City Weaving is Iloilo’s age lod legacy. The industry dated back to the pre- Spanish period thus
dubbed as the “textile center” of the Philippines. The Arevalo Sinamay House owned by
Mrs. Cecilia Gison Villanueva could very well attest to this. This home industry established
by her great grandfather still operates today. Located at Osmena St. Arevalo, Iloilo City,
where jusi (banana fiber) and piña (pieapple fiber) cloths are loom-wooven. Tourists can go

Iloilo Biscocho Haus Biscocho (Spanish: bizcocho, “biscuit’) refers to baked bread topped with butter and

Lizares Mansion Sitting on sprawling estate and resplendent in white paint along the highway in Tabuc-
Suba, Jaro. Known as Angelicum School, a private catholic school runs by the Dominican
Province of the Philippines. Deisgnated by Andres Luna de San Pedro, son of painter Juan
Luna, it was constructed in 1939 by the family of the late Dom Emiliano Lizares. It was
occupied by the Japanese during WWII and used thebasement as prison. The school
pioneered in a non-graded, open-classroom education system in the Philippines. The
grounds and the mansion lights up during the Christmas season with a grand opening
called “Daigon Slash Sigaboom.”
Lapaz Batchoy A noodle soup made with pork, organs, crushed pork cracklings, shrimp, vegetables,
chcken stock, chicken breast, beef loin and roud noodles. Its origin can be traced to the
district of La Paz; hence it is oftentimes reffered to as La Paz Batchoy. The dish was
concocted in the La Paz market in 1938 by Federico Guillergan, Sr. His recipe called for a
mixture of broth, noodles, beef and pork. The soup later evolved into its present form which
has become Iloilo City’s most popular dish. Federico Guillergan, Jr., the son of the soup’s
inventor, states that his father at first jokingly called the dish “bats” when asked for its
name. Later, he added “choy”, from the vegetable dish chopsuey. The batchoy shop first
opened at the La Paz public market in 1945 priced at 20 centavos per bowl.
SM City Iloilo The biggest and most popular mall in Iloilo, having a gross floor areaof 101,735 square
meters. It was opened on June 1999 and is built on a 17.5 hectare prime real estate. SM
City Iloilo, located along Diversion Road, is a very prominent landmarkin Iloilo.
Hoskyn and Company Reputed to the first real departments store in the Philippine, Hoskyn and Co. was
established in 1877 by the Hoskyn brothers, nephews of Nicholas Loney, first British vice-
consul in Iloilo.
Regent Theater The Palace Theater, now the Regent Theater, is the oldest existing cinema house in Iloilo
City. It was built in 1928 and was originally owned by the lopezes in jaro.
Before its renovation in the 1960s, the theater was known to be the biggest in Iloilo. The
structure of thebuilding, particularly the façade, is still original except for the chairs and the
second floor.
Iloilo Products Association Showcases and markets quality tourism products, native products, delicacies and fabrics of
Iloilo and Guimaras specially made by the Ilonggos. It also displays native furniture’s with
excellent art designs.

K. FESTIVAL - 6
Iloilo Dinagyang Festival A religious and cultural festival in Iloilo City. Held every rd Sunday of January, or right after
the Sinulog in Cebu and the Ati-Atuhan in Aklan. It is held both to honor the Santo Niño and
to celebrate the arrival of Panay of Malay settlers and the subsequent selling of the island
to them by the Atis. Dinagyang began after Rev. Fr. Ambrosio Galindez of a local Roman
Catholic parish introduced the devotion to Santo Niño in November 1967. The Confradia
patterned the celebration on the Ati-atihan of Ibajay, Aklan, where natives dance in the
streets, their bodies covered with soot and ashes, to simulate the Atis dancing to celebrate
the present festival. Dinagyang festival was voted as the best Tourism Event of 2006, 2007
and 2008 by the ssociation of Tourism Officers in the Philippines.
Iloilo Paraw Regata Festival Held every third week of February. Claimed as the oldest traditional cracft in Asia, the
Paraw Regatta is a race among seaferers on colorful sailboats called Paraws in the Iloilo
Strait between Guimaras Island and the city of Iloilo. The present-day paraw managed to
maintain its original design from the sailboats of the first settlers from Bormeo who were in
search of a peaceful home in 1212 A.D. Surviving centuries; the parwas have become a
vital part of the Filipino seafaring life. The first race started in 1973 with the mission to
preserve the historic value of the paraws. It is held every 3rd weekend of February at Villa
Arevalo District in Iloilo City. Today, the event has grown from being a boat race to a
festival with various interesting and exotic activities.
Feast of Our Lady of Candles The biggest and most opulent religious pageantry in Western Visayas. The blessing of
candles and the yearly procession of the patronees, the Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria is
followed by the Fieats Queen and her Court. Trade Fairs are held at Jaro Plaza to highlight
the celebration.
Semana Santa Iloilo is one of the religious and cultural centers of prosperous region during the Holy Week,
religious customs and traditions are practiced around the province. A variety of events is
clustered and is commemorated in various ways in service of worship. Many details varying
with the community mark activities such as the presentation of “pasyon” plays dramatizing
the passion and death of Christ. Popular Lenten devotions in the city of Iloilo is a
procession from the principal church where a certain amount of ceremony is tied up in
luxury and splendor with the parade of life-size statues of saints in mourning, winding slowly
around the streets.
Some of the sub events lined up during the occasion by the City Tourism Office are the
Palapas Making Contest; Sambuwa sang Pasyonista and Photo Exhibit.
Chinese New Year Celebrated by the Chinese (of Ilonggo descent) community, the festivity is highlighted by by
a cultural parade and cultural presentation of the Chinese schools in the city, Chinese food
festival and grad fireworks display.
Iloilo City Charter Day Showcasing the Iloilo City’s history and culture. Iloilo was already a city even during the
Spanish colonial Period.Back in the 19th century. By virtue of the Royal Decree of 1896,
Iloilo City was given the coat of arms with inscription: “La Muy Leal Y Noble Ciudad de
Iloilo”in recognition of the people’s lpyalty to the Spanish crown. Iloilo (including Jaro) was,
however, reverted back to being a municipality sometime in 1901 when the American’s took
over the Philippines. In July 16, 1937, Iloilo (Punta) was merged with the towns of jaro, La
paz, Arevalo, Molo, and Mandurriao to form present day Iloilo City on july 16, 1937 by virtue
of Commonwealth Act No. 158. The parade and celebration was postponed 40 days later
pending the formal inauguration of the City Government of Iloilo on August 25, 1973.
For the first time in the history of this city, Iloilo commemorates its declaration as a
Chartered City 73 years ago. The celebration which started last July 16 (the exact date 73
years ago when Iloilo was converted into a chartered city and inaugurated 40 days after)
was spearheaded by the new city Mayor, Jed Mabilog through the City Tourism
Development Officer (CTDO).
This year’s 40 day celebration includes activities such as thanksgiving mass; exhibit of
Ilonggo arts and crafts; civic-military parade; food festival of Ilonggo dishes; Ilonggo music
festival; Search for Mr. and Ms. Iloilo City; river clean-up and blood letting, among others. It
will culminate on August 25 in which the date Iloilo City has been inaugurated as a
chartered city.
