Background
• Huge gap between Demand and
production
• Production- 21% milk of our yearly
demand
• Rest 79% imported (52000 Mt 2016; US $ 207 million/1656
core BDT)

• There is demand of expansion of dairy

sector

FAO, 2016 3
Problems of dairying in Bangladesh
• Lack of high producing breed
• Lack of appropriate research on breeding
• Lack of appropriate breeding policy
• Lack of available land for fodder production &
quality feed
• High feed cost
• Lack of proper marketing policy
• Lack of skilled personnel and scientific
knowledge

3/5/2017 7:37:46 PM 4
Problems of dairying in Bangladesh
• Climate (high temp. and Humidity) is not
suitable for high yielding European breeds
• >62.5% HF x L
– Fluctuation of daily milk production in BD
– Sustainable only for 3-5 parity
– Feel discomfort and need extra care
• <62.5% HF x L can not produce milk as
desired
• Gyr x HF: SL x HF can tolerate rough
weather than L x HF
(Panandam and Raymond, 2005)

3/5/2017 7:38:01 PM 5
Experiences of alike climatic countries

• India
– Crossing dairy breed that are adapted
with local State climate
– A lot of research has been done for
producing climate adaptive dairy breed
by-
• Regional breeding stations
• Military farms

Experiences of alike climatic countries-1

Malaysia

•Mafriwal cow:- Shahiwal x Friesian (Under

trial)
•Milk Production:- 2500 (7000) Lit/ 305days

3/5/2017 7:39:02 PM 7
Experiences of alike climatic countries-2
Caribbean Islands

•Jamaica hope:- 80%J x15% SL x 5%HF

•Milk production:- 2500 (9300) Lit/305days

Experiences of alike climatic countries-3
Kenya

•Magic Cow: 50%Gyr x 50% Friesian,

•Girolando: 50% Gyr x 50%Friesian
Sahiwal and Ayreshire
•Milk Production: 3600
•Milk Production: 29.9 Lit/day
Lit/Lactation (22972)

3/5/2017 7:39:36 PM 9
Experiences of alike climatic countries-4
Brazil

•Girolando: 37.5% Gyr x 62.5% Friesian

•Milk Production: 3600 Kg/Lactation (Individual animal: 123 lit/day)
•Contribute 80% national milk production of worlds 5th largest milk
3/5/2017 producing
7:39:59 PM country. 10
Experiences of alike climatic countries-5
Australia

•AFS(SL50% x HF50%) •Australian milking Zebu

•Milk production: 3000 •Jersey 80% x 20% (Sahiwal, Sindhi
(11000) Lit/lactation and Guernsey)
•Milk Production 2700 Kg (9700)/
Lactation
3/5/2017 7:40:17 PM 11
Experiences in BD
• Savar dairy farm
– Highest stable milk producing cows: 50% SL x HF

• Homeland dairy farm

– From 1995 to till date, found 50% SL x HF is the
best producer

• In Chittagong
– In 2016 at 5 farms it was observed that 50%
– SL x HF was the best producer
3/5/2017 7:40:33 PM 12

Experiences in BD

Homeland Dairy
SL X HF Cow
7193 Lit/ lactation (398 days previous-4130 Lit 309 days)
3/5/2017 7:41:00 PM 13
Problems in AI policy
• Brahman breed has been introduced Without
Proper Research in Bangladesh

• Some companies supplying semen of Angus,

Brangus, Red Brahman and so on..

• They may bred with local cows and there is

possibility to mix with dairy breed threatening dairy
development

• Dairy bulls are collected from field without proper

history and semen is supplied through out the
country
3/5/2017 7:41:30 PM 14

Problem of developing local breed

• Main problems
– Local breed is not pure
– It contains 7 – 10+ bloods of different Indian
breeds
– Maternal heterosis increases when many
breeds are present in recipient cows
– Less tropical climate and tick resistant than
pure breed (Zebu x HF) crosses

3/5/2017 7:41:49 PM 15
Mastitis in High Yielding Breed
• From welfare and food safety considerations and to breeders and consumer's
concern, mastitis should be included in breeding objective of dairy cattle breeds
(Rupp and Biochard, 2003).
• J x SL and Gyr x HF are relatively mastitis resistant breeds
(India) (personal visit and communication, Dr. SS Ghosh, Ramkirisna Mission Dairy farm and
training Centre; Dr. Arvind Goutam, AVS Global, USA; 2016)

• Buffalo is traditionally resistant to mastitis (Mahajan et al., 2011)

• Contribution of buffalo in national milk production
– 66.6% in Pakistan
– 55.0% in India
– 65.2% in Nepal
– only 3% in Bangladesh (FAO,2007)
• Buffalo can tolerate harsh environment,
• Buffalo daily weight gain and FCR is better than cattle
• Introduction of good quality dairy buffalo may be considered
3/5/2017 7:42:11 PM 16

Recommendations
• Considering climate, fodder and land
availability long term breeding policy
should be developed
• Composite breed and technology of alike
climatic countries may be imported for trial
• Local breed can genetically be evaluated
for participation of breeds
• Following alike countries J, SL,Gyr and
HF, can be used to produce composite
breeds
3/5/2017 7:42:30 PM 17
Recommendations
• Controlling importation of powder milk from
countries having subsidized dairy sectors by
adjusting import tax
• Appropriate research is necessary to set up
an adaptive and best breeding policy for
dairy, beef and buffalo production
• Pedigree of bull should be supplied for
maximum output and inbreeding control
• Main stakeholders and breeding specialists
should be part of making policies

3/5/2017 7:42:45 PM 18

Conclusions
• 50%SLx50%HF can be the best producer in BD
and sustain till 9 – 12+ lactation in BD climate

• 75% J x 25% SL may be a good option

• 50% HF x 50% Gyr can be a good option

• Need Valid Researches involving breeding

specialists from Universities and involving private
entrepreneurs.
