Art 361

The Painting Ballerina

Grades: 3rd grade Subjects: Visual Arts, English-Language Arts

Time required: 20-25 minutes Author: KinderArt Staff

Lesson Overview: In this lesson students will listen to a part of the story ‘The Painting
Ballerina’ written by Gloria Buono. After reading, students will then have an open discussion on
what inspires them to do what they love. Students will then create paintings where they will have
the freedom to express their concept.

Learning Objectives:

 Students will be able to create individualistic paintings that expresses their selves
 Students will be able to understand the importance of creativity

Materials

Students will need

 The Painting Ballerina written by Gloria Buono


 Various materials
o Pastels, crayons, markers, watercolors, or for more experienced art students:
include, acrylics, oil paints, etc.
o Any size art paper (or canvas), but 16 X 20 will work best.

Lesson Steps:

 Begin with reading the book ‘The painting Ballerina’ and read only the first 2
chapters. Afterwards have a small open discussion to get the students’ opinion of
the book and what they liked about the pictures. Discuss what inspires them to do
what they love whether it be cooking, playing outside, or even playing with theur
toys.
 After the open discussion, give instructions of what today’s activity will consist of
and pass out the materials.
 Give time for students to complete the activity.
 End the activity with a small discussion of what they’ve learned today.

Art 361

Animals! Animals!

Grades: 4th grade Subjects: Social Studies, Science, technology, Art

Time required: 2 sessions- 20-25 minutes each Author: KinderArt Staff

Lesson Overview: Students will read the Eric Carle book Animals, Animals. They will then
identify different animals, research their chosen animals and write about their animals. This
lesson incorporates social studies, science, technology, art and the writing process..

Learning Objectives:

In the classroom:

 Students will read the book Animals, Animals by Eric Carle


 Students will identify different animals
 Students will research chosen animals
 Write about their animals

In the art room:

 Watch the video Eric Carle Picture Writer


 Observe the Eric Carle collage techniques
 Paint tissue paper with assorted tools to create texture
 Draw animals on white paper to create a pattern and sketch
 Create collage animals on white paper using Eric Carle techniques
 Self-evaluate and give an opinion about their art work

Materials

Students will need:


In the classroom

 Eric Carle book Animals, Animals


 Computer with Internet access
 Animal books
 Paper and pencil

In the Art Room

 Newspaper
 12 X 18 scrap paper
 12 X 18 white paper
 9 X 12 colored tissue paper (for younger grades, a heavier paper will be easier to work
with)
 Tempera paint in assorted colors
 Glue
 Containers for paint mixture
 Texture painting tools: carpet squares, koosh balls, paint scrapers, sponge dabbers, etc.
 Brushes
 Paper plates
 Containers for glue mixture
 Scissors
 Pencil
 Oil pastels
 Drying rack and storage space for projects and community tissue papers
 Mounting paper (optional)

Lesson Steps:

 Begin with reading the book ‘Animals, Animals’ by Eric Carle, after reading this
book have a small open discussion about animals and what their favorite animal
was.
 Instruct students to pick an animal and to research facts about their animal with
the materials listed under “In the Classroom”.
 After collecting their facts, head to the art room to start constructing their animal
with the various materials listed under “In the Art Room”.
 Set their projects aside to dry and the next time they come into the art room allow
students to put their final decorations on their animals.
