Directions Part 2:
After researching the topics and focus questions you want to try to answer to help you
develop your essay, complete the following ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY notes for
your research.

Title: The U.S. Refugee Resettlement Program Is an Unsuitable Target
Source of Text: Migration Policy Institute
Database or URL Where you Found Source:
https://www.migrationpolicy.org/news/refugee-resettlement-program-unsuitable-target
Scholarly or Popular Source? Is this a scholarly or popular text? How do you know?
I consider the source to be scholarly because the title is scholarly rather than catchy. Also, it
specifies who the authors are and provides links for each of their biographies and credentials.
Also related research is linked if you wish to look more into the topic.
Summary: Write a 1-2 paragraph summary of the text using YOUR own words. What is
this text about?
The article addresses the 120-day halt of refugee admissions that was implemented last
year under the Trump administration. It explains that the reasoning for it was to protect the
nation from terrorists when in reality no refugee that entered through the resettlement program
has ever committed such a crime. After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks security
measures were increased and the number of admissions lowered, this was a matter of national
security while Trump’s order was simply political. His order would be lifted once the halted
country worked with the United States to come up with a procedure that ensures security and
welfare. However, lifting the Syrian ban would require the personal approval of the President.
The refugee resettlement program is one of the few immigration programs controlled
completely by the executive branch. The refugees awaiting admission into the U.S. are not
protected by U.S. refugee law. It is essential for the U.S. to relieve political pressure on countries
that uphold their national interests. After the 120-day ban is over the measures taken will be
evaluated and either be softened or left in place. Cutting the resettlement of refugees does
nothing to promote the safety of the U.S.
Analysis: Write a 1-2 paragraph analysis that answers the following questions:
What focus question does this source most respond to? How so? In what ways does this
particular source help you better understand Luiselli’s argument or book? In what ways
does this particular source help you develop your own claims and/or analysis of your
claims in the essay? Does it support your thesis or does it offer an alternative perspective to
your thesis? Explain. If you feel this source will not be helpful in examining your claims or
developing your analysis, why not? Explain.

The source responds to the halt of the U.S. refugee resettlement program. It states that
halting it for certain counties is unfounded in reason but rather a matter of politics. This source
helps me understand more about refugee programs previously implemented in the United States
and ties to the presentation from professor Tapia in which she claims that the reasons for denying
asylum have more to do with political gain than the welfare of the country. The source also helps
me by giving me an example of a program that was halted to allow political review. It provides
examples of other countries who were previously granted asylum because of their desperate need
but were halted for inspection. It directly supports my claim that Luiselli’s argument is weaker
for not including such examples, and therefore supports my thesis.

questions does this research help you think about or lead you to?
The article made me want to look into the situation of Syria and why their ban was indefinite
opposed to other countries.

Title: Syria: In Their Words
Source of Text: Save the Children Federation
Database or URL Where you Found Source:
http://www.savethechildren.org/site/c.8rKLIXMGIpI4E/b.7998857/k.D075/Syria.htm
Scholarly or Popular Source? Is this a scholarly or popular text? How do you know?
I consider the source to be scholarly because it sites credible and relevant sources. The sources
and data uses are all very recent making the information reliable. Plus, the title is scholarly rather
than catchy.
Summary: Write a 1-2 paragraph summary of the text using YOUR own words. What is
this text about?
The article recounts the stories of children living in the middle of the war in Syria. Syria
has been in war for seven years now and the article prompts the reader to post a seven worded
message of hope for the children. It gives examples of messages that not only send hope but also
spread awareness about the ongoing war. There are also statistics given that state Syria as the
most dangerous place for children to live and gives an estimate as to how many children need
humanitarian aid. The article also includes a video of a bombing that was captured on video
during a humanitarian aid mission.
Analysis: Write a 1-2 paragraph analysis that answers the following questions:

The source gives solid reasoning as to why children from Syria need aid. It does not
specifically argue that the children should be granted asylum, but does explain the living
situation of the children and how their definition of a childhood has changed. Luiselli talks about
the difficulties that are sometimes presented because not all children have “evidence” of a life or
death situation from which they must escape. This article talks about a life or death situation that
is nationally recognized and yet the children are not allowed into the United States under the
refugee resettlement program. I think it this article will provides background information for the
information from the article about the refugee resettlement program.

Title: Millions of children fleeing war ‘systematically denied’ basic rights

Scholarly or Popular Source? Is this a scholarly or popular text? How do you know?
I think the source is scholarly because it sites foundations that support their arguments. The
author is clearly stated with a link to more of her articles about refugee crisis’. Also their
arguments are based off of data from reliable resources like Unicef and War Child.
Summary: Write a 1-2 paragraph summary of the text using YOUR own words. What is
this text about?
This article describes the living conditions of displaced children. It states that only 5% of
humanitarian funding actually goes towards child protection and education, making it
devastatingly underfunded. It sites a study by Unicef that states that in the next 10 years the
number of displaced children will more than double. The article states that the inequality of
resources has caused many families to pull their children from schools and have them work.
Many families also marry off their kids at a young age thinking it will give the kids protection,
but it puts them at risk for sexual violence. The number of unaccompanied minors seeking
asylum is expected to keep growing.

The source addresses the impending issues that need to be addressed at the summit for
refugees. This source gives background information about the lives of the children fleeing from
their homes. The article also talks about the infringements on human rights that is being forced
on these children due to an increasing number of refugees and a limited amount of funds. Luiselli
also talks about the human rights violations children suffer on their journey to the U.S. as well as
here in the ICE detention centers. I think this article could serve as a parallel and and strengthen
my argument.
