What is corrosion?

There have been several attempts to define

corrosion,

Your partner  Corrosion is the disintegration of an engineered

material into its constituent atoms due to chemical
reactions with its surroundings.

problems but one of the most commonly accepted is the
following

Corrosion is an electrochemical reaction

between a material and its environment that
produces a loss of their properties.

by Solid Particle Impingement Using Gas Jets, ASTM G40 Terminology relating
to wear and Erosion, and MIL-STD-3033 Particle / Sand erosion testing of rotor
blade protective materials.
 Test procedures are typically tailored to the working condition specifications,
i.e. among others particle composition, test duration, air velocity (directly related
with the outlet pressure of the sand) and the angle of incidence.
 Evaluation of material/component degradation is also tailored to the
application.
E.g. study the Erosion Rate as the weight loss of specimen material relative
to the total flux of abrasive particles that impact the specimen.
