Grade:5 Subject: Mah Unit: Shape and Space (3-D Objects and 2-D Shapes) Lesson Duration: 55 mins
Describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, and analyze the relationships among them.
6- Describe and provide examples of sides and vertices of 2-D shapes that are: parallel, intersecting,
perpendicular, vertical and horizontal
7- Identify and sort quadrilaterals, including: rectangles, squares, trapezoids, parallelograms, and
rhombuses
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
2. Recognize the difference between sides and vertices. When looking at Quadrilaterals and other 2-D
shapes, students will be able to point out how many sides and vertices each shape has
ASSESSMENTS
*Whiteboards and markers -What is the difference between vertices and sides?
PROCEDURE
Introduction (5 mins):
Hook/Attention Grabber:
-Have students get whiteboards and markers. Review prefixes, focusing on quadrilaterals and polygons
-Have students explain why the shape is a quadrilateral, regular polygon, irregular polygon, etc.
-Test students on their understanding of prefixes by getting them to draw the shape
Advance Organizer/Agenda:
3. Worksheets
Transition:
-Introduce terms ‘Side’, ‘Corner/Vertex’, ‘Angle’. Side is a straight line along a shape. Vertex is where 2
sides meet. Angle is the space between two lines. Have students record definitions. Have students draw
their own examples of each on the whiteboards.
-Have students draw a particular shape (trapezoid, parallelogram, rectangle, ect) and identify the
characteristics of the shapes (number of sides, number of vertices). Also check to see which shapes have
perpendicular and parallel lines.
-Have students draw any 4-sided shape on their white board. Without talking, have students sort
themselves into groups according to their shapes without talking. Each group must have a sorting rule for
why they are together.
Closure (5 mins):
-Collect worksheets
-Ask students questions about shapes to check for understanding (“How many vertices does a pentagon
have?)
