2D Shapes- Lesson 2

Grade:5 Subject: Mah Unit: Shape and Space (3-D Objects and 2-D Shapes) Lesson Duration: 55 mins

OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General Learning Outcomes: (for the unit)

Describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, and analyze the relationships among them.

Specific Learning Outcomes: (for this lesson)

6- Describe and provide examples of sides and vertices of 2-D shapes that are: parallel, intersecting,
perpendicular, vertical and horizontal

7- Identify and sort quadrilaterals, including: rectangles, squares, trapezoids, parallelograms, and
rhombuses

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will:

1. Develop their understanding of the term ‘Quadrilateral’ and ‘Polygram’

2. Recognize the difference between sides and vertices. When looking at Quadrilaterals and other 2-D
shapes, students will be able to point out how many sides and vertices each shape has

3. Students will apply their understanding by participating in various activities

ASSESSMENTS

Materials: Key Questions:

*Worksheets -What are different types of quadrilaterals?

*Whiteboards and markers -What is the difference between vertices and sides?

-Can we identify vertices and sides when looking at

shapes that have parallel, intersecting, and
perpendicular lines?

LEARNING RESOURCES CONSULTED

Resource #1: Alberta Program of Studies- Math

Resource #2: Bringing Math Alive, 2D and 3D shapes, 2009, PDF

PROCEDURE

Introduction (5 mins):

Hook/Attention Grabber:
-Have students get whiteboards and markers. Review prefixes, focusing on quadrilaterals and polygons

-Have students explain why the shape is a quadrilateral, regular polygon, irregular polygon, etc.

-Test students on their understanding of prefixes by getting them to draw the shape

Advance Organizer/Agenda:

1. Review last class

2. Vertices and points

3. Worksheets

Transition:

-Pull out paper we used yesterday for taking notes

Body (40 mins):

Learning Activity #1 (20 mins): Side, Vertex, Angle

-Introduce terms ‘Side’, ‘Corner/Vertex’, ‘Angle’. Side is a straight line along a shape. Vertex is where 2
sides meet. Angle is the space between two lines. Have students record definitions. Have students draw
their own examples of each on the whiteboards.

-Have students draw a particular shape (trapezoid, parallelogram, rectangle, ect) and identify the
characteristics of the shapes (number of sides, number of vertices). Also check to see which shapes have
perpendicular and parallel lines.

-Have students draw any 4-sided shape on their white board. Without talking, have students sort
themselves into groups according to their shapes without talking. Each group must have a sorting rule for
why they are together.

Transition to next activity (1 min):

-Put whiteboards and markers away

-Hand out worksheets

Learning Activity #2 (20 mins): Worksheets A and C

-Have students complete worksheets independently, assist where needed

-Make sure to clarify expectations before getting students to start working

Closure (5 mins):

-Collect worksheets

-Ask students questions about shapes to check for understanding (“How many vertices does a pentagon
have?)
