Objectives:

Teach students how to properly head, address, and create a letter. Additionally, students will
learn to create a persuasive writing about which Magic Tree House book is their favorite.

Anticipatory Set:

(examples of letters) – Can you fill in the blanks?

There will be examples of letters from the Magic Tree House books that we will look at as a
class. The teacher will ask the class what they notice about the letters. How do they start? How
is the writing set up? How are the letters ended?

Modeling:

Use laminated print out to craft a letter

There will be a large laminated sheet of paper on the front board with an outline of a letter. The
class will raise their hands and give suggestions to the teacher on what they think should go in
each section. If the students are struggling, the teacher can give them ideas of fill in sections
with options for students to pick from. The letter on the board will be about our favorite Magic
Tree House book. Students will be asked to create their own letter like this after the modeling.

Guided Practice:

 The lesson will start with the students being asked if they have ever written a letter
(most have because of a letter writing center in their daily 5 rotation)
 In each Magic Tree House book, there are letters both from the author and in the actual
story that we will look at for examples
 Students will call out what they see in the letters (headings, writing, who is it from, how
do we know? Etc.)
 The teacher will create a letter using the students help on the pre-made template on
the front board.
 The class will be writing letters about what their favorite Magic Tree House book is to
either Mrs. Harper of myself
 Students probably won’t finish but if they do, students will get to share what they have
made.

Closure:

 If any students have finished, let them share what they have. Most probably will not in
the amount of time given so they can continue it later.
 This is a lead up to students writing letters to their fifth grade reading buddies.
