TRANSFORMING SPACES 2018 SUCCESS!

Doongalik Studios was transformed this month to host an engaging 3-pronged Junkanoo
Exhibition for TS2018 which treated patrons to the Junkanoo Commandos‟ „Junkanoo 101‟
pop up shack, the “JUNKANOO—A Celebration of Life” exhibition of exquisite Jujukanoo
sculptures by Kevin and Vanessa Knowles, and “The Future of Junkanoo - the Rising
Tide” display with Noelle Nicolls, topped off by delicious treats from Jameel Lighbourne
and family of Cheesecake Heaven—THANK YOU ALL! The display will remain up until

More than 40 paintings from collections in Nassau traveled to
South Florida to form the major part of the exhibition “Celebrate:
Art of The Bahamas” which opened in December 2017 and closed
on 25 February 2018.
The exhibition was the result of the collaboration between the
Elliott Museum in Stuart, Florida and the National Art Gallery of
The Bahamas and featured Bahamian paintings from the National
collection as well as works from The D‟Aguilar Art Foundation and
the Dawn Davies collection, all of which complimented paintings of
The Bahamas by South Florida artists Jerry Rose, Howard
Schafer and Stephen Scott Young.
The exhibit, two years in the making, was the result of friendships
between members of the Nassau and Florida art communities.
This was the first time a Bahamian themed show has been held at
the Elliott and it exposed a new audience to the historical perspec-
tive of the growth of paintings of The Bahamas. Amanda Coulson,
RECENT VISITORS TO DOONGALIK included Hugh Peers, a former Director of the NAGB stated: “We were honored to help coordinate
owner of the home, and Bahamian Rhodes Scholar, Dr Myron Rolle. this international exhibit and to share the growth of our national art
scene with our near neighbors in South Florida”. Jenny Esler, the
Executive Director of the Elliott Museum stated she was over-
whelmed with the range and quality of the Bahamian work. “This
exhibit certainly has been a celebration of the Bahamian spirit as
seen through the individual artists‟ eyes.”
Pam Burnside, widow of the Bahamian Master Artist, Jackson
Burnside III, visited the exhibition at the end of February and
presented an in-depth talk to the Museum patrons about the
various Bahamian artworks on display.

ERIC ROSE— This new book of

ANNIE POTTS’ Last Lights—an edition about the light-

houses of The Bahama Islands is a must- have for your
library! My grandfather was a lighthouse keeper, so I already
have my copy!
Creative Nassau recently hosted the Sew N‟ Sews to an evening presen-
tation about the organization and our recent trip with their own Mary Ann
Jones to Paducah Kentucky, our sister UNESCO City of Quilts!

Master Bahamian artist, ANTONIUS ROBERTS, continues to

amaze, and we are honoured to have his new book for sale!
Our CN Radio Shows this month welcomed Laurenne MacDonald of the
Volunteer Reading Programme (above) to two interviews, as well as
Kelley Benjamin (below), a Bahamian teacher working in Singapore, and
recently published author of a children‟s book entitled „Lockie & Lakshmi‟.
