Deaf News April 2018

Dear All,

A Message I hope no-one had a major

problem in the snowy

from the weather. It is lovely that

spring seems to have arrived

Chairperson
at last. A highlight for this

Janie
spring is the showing of The
Silent Child that Andy Palmer
has managed to organise.
Well done to him! He got in there first before he knew it had won an
Oscar. I really hope I can get there to see it.
I saw the refurbished office at our Cambridge base last month and I was
very impressed. There is so much more space for our staff to work and,
like the studio, it is looking very professional. The carpet in the hall makes
a big difference to the way noises echo so it should help people with
Cochlear implants and hearing aids. A big thank you to Rory for raising
the money to get it done. I was also delighted to hear that due to the big
effort from Rory, Ruth and Andrew, CDA have won the fundraising bid for
our volunteer co-ordinator project. It is exciting times.
I am looking forward to meeting all the staff at the annual awards lunch to
celebrate everyone’s hard work.
I hope everyone has a lovely springtime.
Dr Janie Anderson - Chair of CDA

Over 50s Club

During a very cold and windy January, the
Over 50s Club enjoyed afternoon tea with
fresh homemade cakes at The Light Box.
In February, we visited Wisbech Museum
and had a tour with a BSL interpreter. We
were very lucky as the library allowed us
to view a private section where the old
books are kept!

Peterborough Coffee Morning

Peterborough Coffee Morning at Rico’s has
become a very popular meeting place for
deaf people. It runs on the 1st and 3rd
Monday from 10.30am – 12:00pm

Peterborough Drop In
Over 40 people attended a presentation
given by the STROKE association. Thanks
to Hannah who gave a wonderful talk
and made everyone aware about strokes
and how to prevent them. Hannah will be
visiting us again on 21st March 2018 to
give a presentation about blood pressure.
We would love to see you there!

Wisbech Drop In
We were very lucky to host a lady from
Portugal. We shared signs in BSL and
learned signs in Portuguese Sign Language
using a smart phone to help us translate.
SOCIAL MEDIA
Cambridge Half Marathon
Staff and friends took part in the
Cambridgeshire Half Marathon on 4th
March 2018. The course was 13.1
miles long and participants got to
see some of the wonderful scenic
sights of Cambridge. Well done to all
who took part, and thank you for all
of the money you raised for CDA!

BSL Day
Matt and Richenda delivered a British
Sign Language Day to students at St
Johns College School in Cambridge.
The students played games and
learned the alphabet, words and
phrases.
