1. What steps did you go through to create this lesson? With whom did you talk, discuss, or edit
your lesson?
My cooperating teacher, Dr. Luecke, asked me to create a lesson to practice for the writing
SOL. I decided to focus on hooks of essays, as that is one of my strengths, and many
students struggle with that.
2. How did the SOLs and Objectives help focus your instruction?
I relied on the objective concerning the introductions of essays for the writing SOL.
6. How effective was the assessment you chose to use? (If no assessment was used, what will
the future assessment be and how will you gauge its effectiveness?)
I made comments on each student’s hook which prepared them to do well on their writing
SOL.
7. To what degree do you feel that this lesson was a success? What evidence do you have for
the success of the lesson? (Hint: Student learning is the key to a lesson’s success!)
This lesson was very successful, in that the students learned how to better draw the reader
into their essays. Dr. Luecke liked it so much that she did the activity with her other
classes.
8. How did the time spent preparing for your lesson contribute to it’s success?
My preparation and communication with my cooperating teacher helped the lesson run
smoothly.
9. If you could do this lesson again with the same students, would you do anything differently?
If so, what?
I would allow more time for the activity.
