VERB PATTERNS - tricky ones

- Iza nekih glagola može doći i infinitiv ili -ing

1) "to start":
She started crying when he shouted at her. RIGHT
She started to cry when he shouted at her. RIGHT
The bells start ringing at twelve. RIGHT
The bells start to ring at twelve. RIGHT
(nema nikakve razlike u značenju)

-dva -ing oblika NE DOLAZE jedan iza drugog:

Look! It is starting raining. WRONG
Look! It is starting to rain. RIGHT
I was just starting falling asleep when the phone rang. WRONG
I was just starting to fall asleep when the phone rang. RIGHT

- u ovim slučajevima dolazi do promjene značenja:

"TO STOP"
Stop laughing at me! RIGHT
Stop to laugh at me! WRONG
We stopped putting petrol in the car. WRONG
We stopped to put petrol in the car. RIGHT

"stop" + infinitive → razlog za zaustavljanje, npr.:

Q: Why did you stop? A: (We stopped) to put petrol in the car and to have a coffee.

*We stopped putting petrol in the car. (gramatički točno ali nelogično →znači da si počeo u auto
sipati nešto drugo osim goriva)

"TO REMEMBER":

I remember going on holiday to the beach as a child. RIGHT (Išao sam na plažu kao dijete i sada se
toga sjećam)
I remember to go on holiday to the beach as a child. WRONG

I can't remember seeing this film before. RIGHT (Film sam možda već gledao, a možda i nisam, ne
sjećam se)
I can't remember to see this film before. WRONG

Remember to phone your mother tomorrow. RIGHT

Remember phoning your mother tomorrow. WRONG

I hope you remembered to turn off the cooker. RIGHT

I hope you remembered turning of the cooker. WRONG

"FORGET":
I forgot to wish her happy birthday. RIGHT (Trebao sam joj čestitati ali sam zaboravio)
I forgot wishing her happy birthday. WRONG (ovo bi moglo značiti: I wished her happy birthday but
then I forgot that I had and I wished her happy birthday again! Ili jasnije rečeno: Zaboravio sam da
sam joj već čestitao)

I will never forget seeing you for the first time. RIGHT (Vidio sam te i to sada ne mogu zaboraviti)
I will never forget to see you for the first time. WRONG
"TRY":

I tried to learn Chinese but it was too difficult.

-"try" + infinitiv: cilj (za radnje koje su teške ili nemoguće)

I've even tried taking private lessons. It still doesn't work.

- "try" + ing: metoda koju iskušavamo kako bi otkrili što funkcionira za ostvarenje cilja

"REGRET":
I regret telling her. (Rekao sam joj i sada žalim zbog toga)
I regret not going to the party. (Nisam otišao i sada žalim zbog toga)

We regret to inform passengers that the flight has been cancelled due to bad weather.
I regret to have to tell you that I won't be attending the conference after all.

- "regret" + infinitiv je vrlo formalan – koristi se za objavu loših vijesti i kao isprika za sadašnju
situaciju
