Case 7: BATANGAS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE: The Morning After

Rationale:

Engineer Felicidad Lazaro, a mechanical engineering graduate of Adamson University, is

operating her auto parts supply business while teaching at the Batangas Polytechnic College.
After years of teaching, she earned the chairmanship of the Mechanical Engineering Department.
Time came the dean decided to leave for a job abroad making her the new dean of the College
of Engineering.

Engineer Lazaro’s first concern was to fill up the slots by five faculty members who
resigned. However, only ten applicants came up, almost all fresh graduates with no any job
experience. Another concern is the rapid increase of the students in the college. To make the
matter worse, two of the senior members of the college resigned for a job offer from other
company. Engineer Lazaro is now contemplating how she will survive the crisis.

Statement of the Problem:

Engineer Lazaro being the dean of the College of Engineering is now facing a very serious
problem as the number of engineering faculty becomes insufficient with the growing member of
students. Also keeping the faculty members satisfied with their job is another concern.

Solution to the Problem:

1. Considering that all applicants have no teaching experience, their school performance
can be one of the basis in hiring additional faculties. Their willingness and motivation
to teach should also be taken into account.
2. Motivating the existing faculty members to stick into teaching profession is a hard task
in the case of Engineer Lazaro. One way of doing this is by having a good relationship
between the faculty members. Also, providing trainings and seminars for career
enhancement not only in teaching but also in their field can be a good way in motivating
them.

Case 8: BUENAVISTA ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE, INC.: Masquerade

Rationale:

Engineer Oscar Pascua was nominated and hired as a General Manager of the National
Electrification Administration when BECI’s become variant. Because his performance is said to
be very satisfactory. When he called the key officer of the cooperative meeting, he was appraised
of the following.
1. That the price of the electricity charged to BECI’s customers is the third highest in the
country.
2. That 25% of the electricity service provided by BECI’s is lost every month and cannot
be accounted.
3. Requisition for supplies and materials are served after delays as long as three months.
4. Some employees of the cooperative do not report for work
5. Increasing amount of uncollected accounts.

Statement of the problem:

1. No reduction in the price of electricity could be extended to Buenavista Electrical

Cooperative, Inc. customers.
2. The system loss increased by 1%.
3. No improvement in the requisition of supplies and materials.
4. New set of employees do not report regularly for work.
5. Amount of uncollected accounts increased from 3.8 million to 4.2 million pesos.

Proposed Solution:

Engr. Pascua should evaluate and determine the issues regarding the employees’ lack of
motivation in reporting for work. He should also build a better relation or be more hands-on with
his employees’ form of work and from this he could also gain respect from his subordinates. Engr.
Pascua could also personally train or share with his employees’, his experience or the things he
has learned regarding their line of work. He could also organize a new structure regarding the
employees’ task to determine if they are fit to perform better. Engr. Pascua must also discuss with
his employees the objectives and goals that will benefit both his employees and the company.
One of the important aspect is inviting his employees’ and letting them share what they think
about decision, policies or added regulations regarding the company. This will generate more and
better ideas for the company and can also help them to participate and be more supportive of the
company’s decision. Engr. Pascua should also consider the employees’ reaction to the new
policies and decisions that pertains to the company.
