Welcome to this year’s THEATRE SEASON LIST - a special guide to the seasons and trends of the
2018 theatre season among regional and stock theatres throughout the United States. This list is a labor
of love of mine and this also marks the 16th year since I began putting it together. As far as I know the
information is correct but there have been mistakes in the past so always check with the theatre’s
website as well as the AEA website, particularly for the union contract as these change from time to
time. If you happen to find outdated or incorrect information, please contact me at
BaggyJeansBoy@hotmail.com
THE SEASON
This season overwhelmingly finds it’s most popular title in Mamma Mia! with a whopping 33
showings. For plays, both A Raisin in the Sun and Noises Off have proved to be trendy with 8 theatres
putting each title in their seasons. Even with a healthy amount of runs in 2017, newer titles like Million
Dollar Quartet, Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The 39 Steps have continued to find
interest around the country.
First-run titles finding significant showings include Fun Home, Murder for Two, A Doll’s House Part
2, Shakespeare in Love, Skeleton Crew, Constellations, Heisenberg and The Wolves, – many of which
should continue into 2019 seasons. And many beloved classics are making popular comebacks this
season like Oklahoma! (celebrating its 75 anniversary), Singin’ in the Rain (also popular in 2017) as
well as The Pirates of Penzance (which has rounded out the last 4 years as a popular title). Titles by
Ken Ludwig (with 6 plays presented this year), the Church Basement Ladies canon (4 titles, including
the newest Rise Up, O’ Men) and the perennial William Shakespeare have filled many of the seasons
across the board.
Following the pervading political commentary tide, Chicago, West Side Story, Ragtime, Hairspray and
Disgraced (popular the last 3 seasons) seem to resonate with many artistic directors and titles like A
Raisin in the Sun, Crowns, Vietgone, and The Wiz seem to mirror the newer commitment to diversity in
storytelling that theatres have begun to champion.
Many titles, which in recent years have found popularity and numerous showings, have seemed to
have run their course for awhile including Newsies, Saturday Night Fever, All the Way, Sister Act and
the recent re-interest in Beehive.
For 2019, popular titles are apt to be Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Jersey Boys,
Holiday Inn, The Great Society, Matilda, Every Brilliant Thing, Freaky Friday, The Legend of Georgia
McBride, The Savannah Sipping Society and The Magic Play.
2
For this tally, I’ve only notated titles being presented by 4 or more theatres in 2018.
I hope this list helps you to find work and to keep abreast of the community around you!
Sincerely,
ADOLPHO BLAIRE
