Legislature mourns the loss of former Albany County Sheriff James L. Campbell

ALBANY (March 22nd, 2018) – Albany County Legislature Majority Leader Gary W. Domalewicz said
Thursday that members and staff of the Majority Office were deeply saddened to hear about the
passing of former Albany County Sheriff James L. Campbell and wished to express their sincere
condolences to his family and friends.

“Sheriff Campbell served Albany County with integrity from 1989 until 2011, and is largely
responsible for building the public safety apparatus that supports us today,” said Majority Leader
Domalewicz, who worked directly with the sheriff for many years as chairman of the Legislature’s
Public Safety Committee.

Gary credited former Sheriff Campbell with successfully managing the expansion of the Sheriff’s
Department, establishing a drug unit, a search and rescue team and a permanent substation at
Albany International Airport. The two Democrats worked together to build a 911 communication
system, impose residency restrictions on sexual offenders convicted of crimes against minors and
initiate an Advanced Life Support Program.

“I thank Sheriff Campbell for his service to the people of Albany County,” Majority Leader
Domalewicz said. “I was proud to call him a colleague and friend. He will be sorely missed.”

Legislature Chairman Andrew Joyce said Sheriff Campbell leaves a lasting legacy that all law
enforcement officials and Albany County residents can take pride in.

“Sheriff Campbell lived a life of public service, having served as a first sergeant for the State Police
before being elected as Albany County sheriff,” Chairman Joyce said. “He served honorably,
mentored countless police officers and citizens and led the way in keeping our communities safe. I
know I speak for the entire Legislature in saying that we lost a great person today. We offer our
sincere sympathies to all those he touched during his long and illustrious career.”
