Well Engineering Paper MOCK 5th May 2001

A vertical well was drilled to 3500 feet with the drilling assy mentioned below,
BHA#1. A gas reservoir had been penetrated at 3499 ft .
This drilling assy was pulled out of hole and a 8-1/2”coring assy was made up to cut a
core. The drilling assy had been modified to suit the coring , see BHA #2.
A 60 ft core was successfully cut. Bottoms was circulated up prior to the trip out.
After you witnessed the flowcheck at the start of the trip and the pulling of the first
few stands, (who came out very smoothly) , you consider the job under control and
you went for your lunch. After you stuffed yourselves with a good meal you return to
the drillfloor to see how the trip is getting on . The driller shows you the tripsheet as
shown below.

Question 2.
What is the Margin of Overpull for the drillstring when using BHA#1

Question 3.
After completing the coring job the same drilling assy (BHA#1) was RIH to continue
drilling. However when almost on bottom the string got stuck at 3541 ft while RIH.
Circulation is possible, however no rotation or movement up or down. What do you
think happened? Explain your answer.

Question 4.
We apply immediate a straight overpul up of 50,000 lbs. No succes.
We cock the jar and jar with 50,000 lbs O/P. No success.

Looking at the weakest link in the string ( BHA#1) What is the maximum MD
reading with which we are allowed the jar to go off and what is the maximum Martin
Decker reading for a straight pull.
Answers.
Q1
There is a possibility for gas coming out of the core and percolating up the annulus.
The trip tank is filling the hole less as it should and we should take care that we are
not caught out by the well once we are laying down the core and the core barrel. This
is normally a time consuming activity.
The safest approach would be to RIH again the 25 stds and circulate bottoms up and
check if any gas comes up. If no gas we pooh again , if gas was found at bottoms up ,
we can assume all came out of the core and the hole core should now be clean of gas.

Q2
Wt string in mud = 354.2 x 101.3 x 0.96 x 0.838 + 366 x 50 x 0.838 + 2820 x 21.9 x
0.838 = 95,950 lbs
Maximum overpull is 0.85 x 436,150 – 95,950 = 274,777 lbs

Q3
It looks like you run into the cored section without reaming. The driller should always
be very carefull when a different BHA is run in hole . The danger of a stabilizer in
different positions causing the BHA to stick by different geometry is very real.
One should always ream cored sections very carefull with low wob, taking care not to
‘corkscrew’ yourselves stuck!!

Q4
Th maximum o/pull one can jar with is 150,000 lbs ( see jar data)
The weight below the jar is 290.7 x 101.3 x 0.96 x 0.838 = 23,690 lbs.
This means max overpull at the jar should be 150,000 – 23,690 = 126,310 lbs
This means maximum MD weight indicator reading before the jar blows:
= 95,500 + 85,000 + 126,310 = 306,810 lbs

Once the jar has fired we can continue to pull:

Max MD reading for a straight pull = 0.85 x 436,150 + 85,000 = 455,727 lbs
