9944 Smart S8K external interfaces

Introduction
The 9944 Smart S8K platform is equipped with six main types of external interface:
• E1/T1 network interface (Iub)
• Radio interface
• Alarm / remote control interfaces
• Power supply interface (AC)
• User equipment

Network interface
The 9944 Smart S8K supports three modes of Iub transport for 3G operations:
• ATM
All Iub traffic (OAM, NBAP signaling, R99, HSPA) is carried over ATM/E1(T1).
E1 link complies with ITU G703/G704. T1 link is based on ANSI standard.
The raw data rate between Node B and RNC can rise up to 15.872 Mbit/s (E1) or
12.288 Mbit/s (T1). Depending on the data flow, ATM AAL2 and AAL5 are used on
the above physical link through IMA. The IMA framing provides for physical link
performance monitoring and management.
In the case of a 120-ohm network, the only equipment needed to ensure the PCM
connection is the 120-ohm PCM cable.
In the case of a 75-ohm network, it is necessary to have baluns (two baluns per PCM)
to ensure adaptation from the 120 ohm of the Node B to the 75 ohm of the customer
network. Four types of baluns can be used: BNC, 1.6/5.6, SMZ type 43, or BNC to
RJ-45.
• Hybrid ATM/IP
An IP-based Iub transport is used for HSPA traffic whereas an ATM-based Iub
transport is used for the remaining Iub traffic (R99, OAM and NBAP signaling). The
I/B HSPA traffic can also be carried on the ATM link if the IP link is lost (hybrid Iub
resiliency between ATM and IP).
The hybrid Iub interface requires an xCCM-U module (“xCCM-U-4E1” or
“xCCM-U-GE” hardware configuration) or an eCCM-U module (“eCCM-U 8-4E1
ports” or “eCCM-U-GE” hardware configuration).
• Native IP
With native IP Iub transport, you can choose to carry all Iub traffic (OAM, NBAP
signaling, R99, HSPA) on an IP over Ethernet transport.
The native Iub interface requires an xCCM-U module (“xCCM-U-GE” hardware
PRELIMINARY

configuration) or an eCCM-U module (“eCCM-U-GE” hardware configuration).

– Call processing
– Data switching and routing
– OAM management
– Node B frequency and timing reference
• Global Positioning System and Alarm (GPSAM) function:
– External/internal alarm connectivity
– External GPS synchronization reference interface
• Optical Interface (OIM) function:
The OIM offers the following functions:
– Six ports supporting connection of up to six radio devices (TRDU, RRH or
MC-TRX), or connection of more than six radio devices using several modules in
daisy chaining (TRDU60W variant or RRH)
– Physical interface supported by six Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) compliant
connections: optical SFPs of Multi-Mode (MM) (850 nm) or Single-Mode (SM)
(TX 1550 nm, RX 1310 nm) type support optical fibre links.
For short intra-cabinet connections, the SFPs and fibre can be replaced by
electrical CPRI cables that plug into the SFP cage in place of the SFP.

The xCCM-U front panel provides connectivity for six CPRI cables:
• Up to six TRDUs can be connected (electrical connections).
• For higher sectorization (three local sectors and three remote sectors), it is also
possible to connect up to three TRDUs and three RRHs (in a two-carrier configuration
maximum).
In this mixity case, the connections (electrical for TRDUs, optical for RRHs) must be
done according to the following figure.

Figure 4-11 TRDU/RRH mixity support on xCCM-U board

The SFP cages supporting the connection with the RRHs must be equipped with optical
transceivers. These optical transceivers must be provisioned according to the optical
interface available on the RRH (Multi-Mode (MM) or Single-Mode (SM), dual or single
fiber).
The distance between the Node B and the RRH determines the optical mode (MM or
SM):
• MM dual fiber is used for short distance (up to 500 m): one fiber carries the downlink
signal and a second one the uplink signal.
• SM single fiber is used for long distance (up to 20 km): one single fiber carries both
downlink and uplink signals using separate wavelength.
PRELIMINARY

• SM dual fiber is used for long distance (up to 20 km): one fiber carries the downlink
signal and a second one the uplink signal.

Connectivity with RRH20-21 variant of RRH device
The connection of RRH20-21 devices (only supporting HSSL interface) to the xCCM-U
module requires the following three ports to be used on the xCCM-U front panel:
• Optical port 4, for connection to the RRH20-21 number 1
• Optical port 5, for connection to the RRH20-21 number 2
• Optical port 6, for connection to the RRH20-21 number 3

Figure 4-12 RRH20-21 connection on d2U

Nevertheless, on the TIL or at WMS level, the three RRHs appear as if they were
connected on optical ports 1, 2 and 3.
At WMS level, the RRHs must be declared as follows: antennaConnection _11 for the
first, antennaConnection _21 for the second, and antennaConnection _31 for the third
RRH. These informations are sent to the Node B in the DownLoading Unit (DLU). A
DLU parameter informs the Node B that the RRH connected is a RRH20-21 and operates
in HSSL format.
When the RRH tries to connect on the optical port of the xCCM-U (port 4, 5 or 6), the
Node B:
• Recognizes that the RRH is HSSL-compliant
• Proceeds an address translation of RRH HSSL port (41 to 11, 51 to 21, 61 to 31)
• Declares to the WMS the connection of the RRH instance 11, 21 or 31

Connectivity with MC-TRX module

CPRI links can be connected to MC-TRX modules for multi-carrier operation in the

enhanced Core Controller Module-U (eCCM-U)

Main functions
The eCCM-U aggregates the following three functions:
• Core Controller (CCM) function:
– Iub interface
– Call processing
– Data switching and routing
– OAM management
– Node B frequency and timing reference
• Global Positioning System and Alarm (GPSAM) function:
– External/internal alarm connectivity
– External GPS synchronization reference interface
– Integrated GPS receiver (optional)
• Optical Interface (OIM) function:
– Six ports support connection of up to six radio devices (TRDU, RRH, MC-TRX),
or connection of more than six radio devices using several modules in daisy
chaining (TRDU60W variant or RRH)
– Physical interface supported by six Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) compliant
connections: optical SFPs of Multi-Mode (MM) (850 nm) or Single-Mode (SM)

Transmitter Receiver Duplexer Unit (TRDU)

Introduction
The TRDU module is a complete UMTS Radio Equipment designed to operate in the full
UMTS FDD band I (2100/1900 MHz band). It manages functionalities between base
band CPRI interface and Radio Frequency (RF) air interface.
The 9944 Smart S8K is equipped with the TRDU60-21 (or TRDU60-21B variant, only
available on certain systems), that delivers 60W nominal composite output power at
module level, and supports up to four adjacent frequency carriers at 20 MHz
instantaneous bandwidth:
• 60W x 1 frequency carrier
• 30W x 2 frequency carriers
• 20W x 3 frequency carriers
• 15W x 4 frequency carriers

Main functions
The TRDU module integrates the following three functions in a single module:
• Transceiver
• Multi-carrier power amplifier
• Duplexer/filter
The TRDU60–21 or TRDU60-21B module can manage up to four adjacent carriers in
UMTS Band I (2110-2170 MHz in downlink; 1920-1980 MHz in uplink) with the
following characteristics:
• Downlink: one transmit chain supporting up to four adjacent UMTS carriers (carrier
spacing between 4.6 MHz and 5.2 MHz)
• Uplink: dual receive chain in a main/diversity arrangement supporting four adjacent
carriers
RF air interface is supported through two antenna connections:
• One duplexed antenna connection supporting transmit and receive main paths
(Antenna Main)
• One single antenna connection supporting receive diversity path (Antenna Div).
Base band interface is supported through:
• TRDU60-21 or TRDU60-21B: two CPRI links, support of CPRI rate 2 (1.2288 Gbps)
PRELIMINARY

The TRDU module incorporates a Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) meter to
monitor RF mismatching between antenna and TRDU main antenna connection. This
VSWR meter monitors Return loss at antenna main port connection. Two VSWR
thresholds are monitored, corresponding to two alarm levels reported on CPRI interface.
The TRDU module also provides an Antenna Interface Standard Group (AISG)
functionality.
The following figure illustrates the internal architecture of the TRDU module.

Figure 4-23 TRDU internal architecture

The TRDU module can be used in different modes regarding antenna system, depending
on Tower Mounted Amplifier (TMA) use and/or AISG Antenna Line Device (ALD) use:
• No TMA mode
Antenna outputs and antenna(s) are directly connected through RF feeders.
• TMA mode
An additional amplifier is added on each antenna branch in order to compensate
feeder loss on uplink path.
Two sub-modes with TMA can be used:
– TMA UMTS mode: in this mode, the TMA is powered and monitored from the
TRDU module.
PRELIMINARY

– TMA Mix mode: in this mode, the TRDU module manages only extra gain on
uplink paths introduced by the TMA. This mode can be used in case of antenna
sharing with another system (the TMA is powered and monitored from this
system), or in case of AISG TMA (the TMA is powered and monitored by the
AISG primary device).

Multi-Carrier TRX900 (MC-TRX)

Introduction
Multi-carrier TRX 900 MHz (MC-TRX 900) is a product that integrates a transceiver and
one MCPA in order to support simultaneously multiple GSM 900MHz carriers, as well as
GSM and WCDMA carriers, GSM and LTE carriers, or even WCDMA and LTE carriers.
The MC-TRX 900 is a single sector 900 MHz radio module, including:
• A 900 MHz 2G/3G/LTE transceiver
• One 2G/3G/LTE Multi-Carrier Power Amplifier (MCPA)
• A 3G/LTE CPRI interface
• A 2G Modem
• A 2G interface towards 2G controller
The MC-TRX module is a complete UMTS Radio Equipment designed to operate in
UMTS FDD band VIII-35 MHz. It manages functionalities between base band Common
Public Radio Interface (CPRI) and Radio Frequency (RF) transmit and dual receive
interfaces.
MC-TRX 900 within 9100 Multi-standardBase Stations works in GSM-WCDMA MSR
(Multi-Standard Radio). This means one single MCTRX module is able to emit WCDMA
and GSM at the same time.
MC-TRX 900 operates in a reduced bandwidth down to 4.2 MHz. This allows GSM 900
MHz carriers to be closer to the UMTS signal without interfering, making better use of
the available spectrum.
Note: The MC-TRX 3G can be controlled (through CPRI links):
• by a d2U hosted in the Multi-standard cabinet,
• by a d2U located outside the Multi-standard cabinet,
• by an xCOB board hosted in a 9311 Macro Node B cabinet.

Main functions
The MC-TRX 900 module integrates the following functions into one single module:
• Transceiver
• One multi-carrier power amplifier ( MCPA)
The MC-TRX control interface is based on
PRELIMINARY

9944 Smart S8K cooling and heating system presentation

Overview
The 9944 Smart S8K equipment operates in a temperature-controlled environment. The
internal temperature of enclosures is regulated with a combination of heater, Direct
Ambient Cooling System and cooling fans.
The 9944 Smart S8K cooling and heating system includes the following components:
• Cooling fans dedicated to the d2U (see “d2U fan tray (48V)” (p. 4-32))
• Cooling fans dedicated to the TRDU sub-rack (see “TRDU sub-rack Cooling Unit
(TRCU)” (p. 4-49))
• Direct Ambient Cooling System (DACS) installed at the top of the cabinet (see
“Direct Ambient Cooling System (DACS)” (p. 4-76)). Low noise or normal operation
is available.
Heating is provided by the heater if the internal air temperature is below 15°C. Above this
temperature, module cooling is provided by the fans. If the temperature increases above
40°C, the damper is opened. When the temperature rises further, the DACS fan speed
increases. The DACS transfers heat from the cabinet interior to the outside air
environment.

Overview
The DACS or DACS “LN” (Low Noise) is used in the 9944 Smart S8K to maintain the
correct air environment within the cabinet using fresh air cooling.
It is located in the top compartment of the cabinet. It cools the internal air by pulling fresh
air from the outside of the cabinet and extracting hot air on top of the cabinet to the
outside.

Operating principle
The operating principle is the following:
• An air damper opens to admit external air (incoming air being filtered) and controls
the inner cabinet environment by mixing appropriate amounts of outside and
recirculated air.
• Twin blowers drive air down the rear duct and into the equipment enclosure via slots
at the rear. Returned air to the cooling system is routed through two sets of holes in
the base, with excess air being evacuated from vents located on either side of the
system.

Operational modes
The internal temperature control is achieved by a high quality thermistor having an
accuracy of ±0.2°C (0,36°F) between 0°C (32°F) and 70°C (158°F).This device is located
in the left hand exit duct above a hole on the duct side; the hole ensures that the
thermistor is constantly in a moving air stream, regardless of damper position. The
operational mode of the cooling system is dictated solely by the information provided by
the thermistor.
There are four operational modes:
• Low temperature –40°C (–56°F) < Tcab < 15°C (59°F) The heater is powered on, the
damper is closed to the outside and air is recirculated via the holes in the base of the
cooling system.
• Medium temperature 15°C (59°C) < Tcab < 40°C (104°F) The heater is switched off,
the damper remains closed and further heating of the equipment enclosure is achieved
solely by the internal equipment loading.
• Normal temperature Tcab = 40°C (104°F) The damper position is controlled
automatically by the modulating motor, mixing appropriate amounts of recirculated
and external air to maintain a constant temperature. Excess air is evacuated from the
cooling system from vents at either side of the cooling system.
• High temperature Tcab > 40°C (104°F) Although the damper is fully open, the cooling
system is unable to keep the cabinet temperature to 40°C (104°F) which now rises
with the external temperature. At an outside temperature of 50°C (122°F), the internal
cabinet will rise to a nominal 60°C (140°F) under fully-loaded conditions.

Alarm
The cooling system is supplied with two hard alarm outputs:
• The first alarm output signals a fault on the cooling system.
PRELIMINARY

• The second one indicates a maintenance requirement for the filter.

LED
The cooling system is supplied with three alarm LEDs for on–site fault diagnostics:
• The red LED indicates a critical alarm for fan failure.
• The yellow LED indicates a critical alarm for heater circuit failure.
• The green LED indicates a maintenance alarm for a clogged filter.
On the top of the cooling system, there is a window in the lid which allows the user to
view the LEDs. The LEDs are normally lit when healthy and off on alarm.

Powering
The cooling system is DC-powered, which allows internal or external battery back–up.
The DC power consumption of the cooling system is 400–450 W. The cold start–up
performance of the unit is controlled by an built–in AC to DC converter (for operation of
the fans) and by a 2.5 kW heating element.

AISG Tower Mounted Amplifier (AISG TMA)

Introduction
The AISG TMA is used if the cable length between the cabinet and the associated antenna
is long.
The AISG TMA is mounted as close as possible to the antenna.

Main functions
The AISG TMA allows to decrease the overall noise level by amplifying the received RF
signal.
In UMTS 2100, the AISG TMA 2100 input/output (from the Node B) is used for
transmission and reception for main path or diversity path. One AISG TMA 2100 is used
per sector.
The AISG TMA provides an AISG feed-through feature that facilitates the
implementation of the RETA solution, eliminating the need of an extra cable between the
Node B and the antenna for carrying the RETA signals. The AISG TMA includes a
receiver amplifier on each downlink path. In addition, the AISG TMA acts as an AISG
LOC, and provides AISG RS485 connectivity to the other ALDs (mainly RET antenna).
The AISG TMA is a dual-mode TMA, that can be used:
• In AISG mode
• In standard mode
The choice between the two modes is done at OMC, through the TmaAccessType
parameter:
• TmaAccessType = tmaMix for AISG mode
• TmaAccessType = tmaUmtsonly for standard mode
The AISG TMA is managed as a passive component by the TRDU. The AISG TMA is
active in reception only.

Hardware description
The AISG TMA hardware consists of the following components:
• A pole fixing system
• An AISG TMA module

AISG TMA module
The AISG TMA is composed of the following devices:
• A pass-band filter
• A Low Noise Amplifier (LNA)
All the external RF connectors are standard female 7/16 connectors.
The AISG TMA provides the following connectors:
• The "ANT 0" and "ANT 1" connectors, which allow connection to the antennas (Main
and Diversity).
• The "NodeB 0" and "NodeB 1" connectors, which allow connection to the Node B.
• The AISG connector, which provides connection to the RCU through an AISG cable.

DC power
AISG TMA in non AISG mode: +12 V dual branches power supply (from TRDU antenna
connector).
AISG TMA in AISG mode: +24 V single branch power supply (from main TRDU
antenna connector) delivered by the CCU.

TMA alarms
The TMA alarms are monitored by the TRDUs. If the TMA is faulty, this is reported to
the OMC as a TRDU fault and the impacted cells are notified to the RNC.
TMA alarms in AISG mode are monitored by the AISG CCU and sent through site LAN
interface.

Remote Electrical Tilt Automatic (RETA)

Introduction
This section describes the Alcatel-Lucent RETA solution, based on Kathrein components.

Main functions
The RETA feature allows to adjust remotely the antenna tilt from the OMC (over IP),
through the Node B.

Hardware description of the RETA system

The RETA system consists in the following devices:
• A controller, named Central Control Unit (CCU)
The CCU must be installed in the 19-inch 6U user space of the 9944 Smart S8K, and
linked to the xCCM-U/eCCM-U module via the Ethernet input.
• Motors, named Remote Control Unit (RCU), plugged on each antenna
One RCU is required per Xpolar antenna (Main and Diversity). Three RCUs are
required for a three-sector configuration.
The RCUs can be daisy-chained (typical use: two Xpolar antennas per sector with two
daisy-chained RCUs).
The CCU provides three RS485 AISG outputs to AISG antenna network via TRDU and
feeders. The RCU is connected to the AISG TMA or a smart bias tee is needed at antenna
level to connect the RCU.
In the 9944 Smart S8K, the CCU module is connected to the xCCM-U/eCCM-U module
via the Ethernet 10base T link (Site LAN).
The CCU module is powered in -48 V DC (power cable from the "J2 AUX" connector of
the TRDU ICO module).
The following figure shows the CCU front panel.
