SUGGESTED SUPPLY LIST
Don't feel you need to purchase everything on the list. If you
prefer different drawing materials, it’s OK. Use what you like.

b Drawing board
You will need a light weight rigid surface to hold and protect
your drawing. My board is 22” wide by 25” high. I would not
recommend going much smaller. A large piece of foam board
or masonite is an inexpensive alternative.
b T-square
If you have one please bring it. I will bring extras to share,
so don’t purchase one for the workshop.
b Straight edge
You know what that is.
b Ball point pen
We will be drawing on one of the photo references and ink
shows up better than pencil.
b Drawing materials
I will be using PRISMACOLOR® Terra Cotta and white
colored pencils. I also like CREATACOLOR MONOLITH
woodless graphite pencils (soft 4B, 6B or 8B)
Use what you like to draw with.
b Kneaded rubber eraser
Very fun to play with and yes, it also ereases.
b Pencil sharpener
I like KUM® Automatic Long Point, available at most art
supply stores. Not expensive and it gives a razor sharp point.
b Drafting brush
Any type of brush to keep your drawing surface clean
b Drafting or painters tape
b Paper
I will bring CANSON® and Stonehenge® paper that you may
purchase for $3 per sheet or bring your own paper.
b Photo references
Refer to the “Choosing a Good Photo Reference” document.
b Chocolate
Useful for rewarding yourself when things are going well or
consoling yourself when it’s not.

CHOOSING A GOOD PHOTO REFERENCE
It’s very important to have a good photo to work from. Poor photos make your job much more difficult and
reduce your chances for success. Black & white is preferred over color because it is easier to see values.

Poor Photo Reference Sample Good Photo Reference Sample

- Flat lighting, no clear light and - Distinct light and shadow patterns
shadow patterns - Clear focus

What Photos To Bring:

- One good quality black & white photo, large enough to see details (see image 3)
- A second black & white photo, enlarge so it measures about 8” to 8.5” from the crown of the
head to the chin (see image 4). We will be drawing on this black & white photo.
