Southern Arts Society (SASi) offers a variety of free monthly programs along with paid classes and workshops for all skill levels.
Join SASi or renew your membership to save on classes and exhibit entries. General Membership starts at $25. For more
information please visit us in person, or check our website at www.southernartssociety.org. There you will find a detailed class
description and a list of supplies required for the student to bring. SASi meets the first Tuesday Sept thru June, for a Free
informative art demonstration or mini-workshop. Visitors are welcome. Doors open at 6:30 and program starts at 7 pm.
For classes you must register and pay in advance to reserve your seat in the class. SASi accepts cash, check and credit cards.
Class size and seating are limited. Classes that do not register the minimum number of students may be canceled. If the class is
canceled by the instructor all payments will be refunded. Wear appropriate clothing or bring an apron to wear. Please bring
your own snacks or lunch, unless noted otherwise. Soft drinks and water are available at SASi.

Monday March 19, 10 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 4 pm POTTERY DEMONSTRATION – FREE EVENT


Spend the day, or a few hours with potter Barry Lockman as he talks about his 40+ years in pottery digging local clay, processing
it, throwing on a wheel, making glazes and firing in a wood fired kiln. Drop by our Pottery Studio and watch Barry demonstrate
his techniques throwing pottery standing at the wheel, making the process look effortless. Barry will be the featured artist on
Our State Magazine’s new video series “Meet the Maker” on www.ourstate.com.

Watercolor Workshop with Dwight Rose
Two full days 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM –
Cost: $120 for SASi members, and $135 for Non-members.
Student Skill Level: intermediate, advanced or combination.
Lunch: Bring your own
Class Description: Enjoy insightful instruction and experimentation while
learning the fundamentals of watercolor painting. Using traditional methods,
you will learn the basic techniques that are specific to this medium. The
instructor will provide step-by-step approaches from beginning to completion
of the entire painting process. Subjects painted will mainly be landscapes and
some prior experience in drawing and watercolor painting would be helpful.
Students are responsible for bringing supplies. See Supply List online or at
SASi.

SASi Program and Meeting April 3 at 7 pm. Artist Susan Lackey will work with us to make our own stamps for
mixed media, in advance of her upcoming workshop on April 21 “Abstracts You Will Love”. This is a Free Program.
Doors open at 6:30 to meet and greet.

Saturday April 21 - Painting Abstracts You Will Love with Susan Lackey
Time: 9:30 AM-4:00 PM Cost: $80 per student for SASi members and $85 non-members
Student Skill Level: All Levels Ages: 15 and older
Materials: All Supplies Included Lunch: Bring your own
Class Description: This workshop is designed to help you make abstract art you feel happy
about. You will use inks, acrylics, various mark making tools to paint on a 16’x16” painting
panel. And best of all, you will have fun and learn lots. Creating abstracts can be daunting
but not in this workshop. Susan will guide you through a series of steps in her stress-free
process. You will create a textured underpainting and use layering as you paint with
different media. Toward the end of the day, Susan will show you how to self-evaluate your
painting. She will demonstrate and help you individually to achieve an expressive work of
art that you will love. This is the kind of workshop you can take many times. You will
produce different results each time you take it.
Saturday April 28 - Creativity Unblocked: Intuitive Painting
with Stacey Pilkington Smith
Time: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Cost: $65 per student for SASi members and $75 non-members
Student Skill Level: All Levels Minimum Age: 14 and older
Materials: Some Supplies Included – See Supply List for what to bring Lunch: Bring your own
Class Description: This workshop is about both technique and creative exploration – a process of letting
go in a non-judgmental space of experimentation. There are no mistakes here. You’ll be transforming
your canvas with 5-7 layers using: color, conventional/unconventional techniques, acrylic paint, and
washes/glazes. Before hands-on instruction begins, we will cover color theory (briefly), texture,
harmony, negative space, line, and balance. Art shown is example created with these techniques.

Saturday May 12 Drawing - Back to Basics with Todd Baxter


Time: 9 am - 4 pm. Cost: $55 SASi Members, $60 Non-members.
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate. Ages: 14 & up
Bring your own lunch.
Supplies for artists to bring: See list on SASi website.
Class Description: Students will focus on the basics of drawing; line, shape,
value, proportions and composition. The more experienced you are, the more
aware you become of the importance of mastering the basics. We will also
work on improving rendering skills.
Saturday May 19 Portrait Drawing with Todd Baxter
Time: 9 am - 4 pm. Cost: $55 SASi Members, $60 Non-members.
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate. Ages: 14 & up
Bring your own lunch.
Supplies for artists to bring: See list on SASi website.
Class Description: Learn how to create a good solid drawing by focusing on accurate proportions,
capturing those important shadow shapes and honing your rendering skills.

NOTE TO STUDENTS
SASi has table top easels for students to use during classes. We also have limited supplies to borrow: brushes, paints, and other
tools in case you are missing an item. Donations are welcome. We may also have w/c paper or canvas to purchase. Please ask.
SASi has a refrigerator and microwave to use and soft drinks to purchase. Fast food and local eateries are close by. Please Arrive
Early to set up for your class so that the instructor may start on time. Doors open ½ hour prior to class for you to set up. Be
aware of time for lunch breaks. Always be respectful of other students and limit interruptions during class.
