1 INTRODUCTIO
Natyasastra is the most detail and elaborate of all treatises on dramatic criticism
and acting ever written in any language and is regarded as the oldest surviving text on stagecraft in the
world.Written by the great dramatist of ancient india, Bharata, Natyasastra is reckoned as the poetic of
indian drama. the earliest surviving one is the Abhinavabharati by Abhinava Gupta.it was followed by
work of writers such as saradatanaya of twelfth-thirteenth century, sarngadeva of thirteenth century, and
Kalinatha of sixteenth century. However the abhinavabharati is regarded as the most authoritative
commentary on Natyasastra as Abhinavagupta provides not only his own illuminating interpretation of
the Natyasastra, but wide information about pre-Bharata traditions as well as varied interpretation of
the text offered by his predecessors.Written in sanskrit, the vast treatise consists 6,000 sutras.Bhrama
created drama at the request of all Gods and assigned its performance to Bharta and his hundred sons or
his disciples, Bharma, he immensely borrowed the four vedas from Rigveda he took music, from
Yjurveda, he took gesticulation, from Atharvveda he took rasa and Samveda he took dilough. The
Natyasastra is based upon the much older Gandharva Veda. Which contained 36000
slokas.Unfortunatly there are no surving copies of the Natya veda.Though many scholars believe most
slokas were transmitted the oral tradition, there are scholars who believe that it may have written by
various authors at different time.
Natyasastra the oldest of the texts of theory of the drama, claims for the drama
divine origin, and a close connection with the sacred vedas themselves.the Natyasastra is an ancient
India treaties on the perfoming arts, encompassing theatre, dance and music. it was written during the
period between 200 BC and 200 AD in classical india and is traditionally attributed to the sage
Bharata.the Natyasastra is incredibly wide in its scope while it primarily deals with stage craft,it has
come to infiuence music, dance,make-up, and virtully every other aspects of stage craft.it very
important to the history of indian classical music because it is the only text which gives such detail
about the music and instruments, of the period.first Sanskrit work on dramaturgy. The treatise says that
Bharata was the one who popularized the Natyaveda, created by Brahm, on the earth. He is also said
to have collected all the material of earlier acharyas ancient teachers like Tumburu, Narada and
Nandi and gave the Nayashastra a complete coherence by making additions, alterations and
adaptations according to the requirements of time and space. It is clear from the text that later it was the
sons and the followers of Bharata who transmitted the art of the theater to the world. Abhinava Gupta
uses the name ¸Adi-Bharata for Bharata as the sons and the followers of Bharata were called Bharatas,
the actors. There was quite a large number of commentaries on the Natyashastra of Bharata. But all
of them are unfortunately lost, excepting the Abhinava Bharata of Abhinavagupta.
