Philippine Orthopedic Center

Clinical Instructor: Mrs. Evelyn S. Salvador RM RN MAN

Date of Rotation: August 2-4/ 9-11, 2010

August 2, 2010 – MONDAY

On the first day of our exposure in Philippine Orthopedic Center, we

had our General Orientation together with the other nursing students from
different colleges and universities. Our clinical instructor Mrs. Evelyn
Salvador checked our attendance first, and then she checked our
grooming especially our shoes and caps. After that we proceeded to the
Orientation room, we had a brief lecture about the history of Philippine
Orthopedic Center, its wards, the staffs, and the services rendered by the
hospital. The rules and regulation was also mentioned particularly the use
of cellphones during duty. Then we had our initial demonstration on
Balance Skeletal Traction. After the Orientation our clinical instructor
gathered us again to gave us our assigned topics that we have to report
and the requirements we need to pass on the last day.

August 3, 2010 – TUESDAY

On the second day we had our lecture about hardware then

followed by the lecture on gadgets. During our lecture on hardware I
learned the different apparatus use during bone surgery and the different
bone prosthesis, which are usually implanted on a person who had a bone
problem. While in gadgets our clinical instructor gave us a lecture about
the braces, cast, mold, and different kinds of traction. I was able to easily
understand the lecture because of the some of the actual gadgets was
shown and at the same time I have a hard copy of the lecture, which was
provided by Mrs. Salvador. After those lectures one of my classmate
reported about Bone Fracture and Bone healing.

August 4, 2010 – WEDNESDAY

On the third day, we had an opportunity to have a patient who has

Balance Skeletal Traction. I was able to interview him and assess his
condition. Then I take his vital signs, then proceed to his morning care,
with the help of my partner I was able to bath my patient in his bed. And
after that I also help my partner to do the same thing with his patient. I
take all the necessary information I can get from him because I will base
my Nursing Care Plan (NCP) to his condition. Then we had again another
Initial demonstration about Balance Skeletal Traction together with other
nursing student from different school, it was really helpful because the first
Initial demonstration was not that clear to me due to distance, it was far
from our place that’s why I didn’t not able to saw all the procedures
clearly. After that activity we had our exam about the lecture yesterday
which was the Gadgets and Hardware, it was a little bit hard because I
was not able to familiarize my self to all those gadgets and hardware.
August 9, 2010 – MONDAY

On the fourth day we were able to practice our return

demonstration for Balance Skeletal Traction before the actual one. We
were given enough time to try what we learned and observe during the
lecture and initial demonstration. We were divided into two groups. I was
assigned to be on the second group so while waiting for the first group to
finish, me and my group mates had a practice, especially on how to do
those knots included in the procedure, but still on the actual demonstration
I had a hard time doing it, and due to nervousness I was also not able to
perform what I’ve been practicing, too bad for me because after that
demonstration I was really expecting a low grade from that Return
Demonstration, but not fail. But I was still lucky because, after that we had
an exam also about Balance Skeletal Traction and I answer well to those
questions and I got a good score.

August 10, 2010 – TUESDAY

On the fifth day we just stay on the conference room to have our
reporting, before I was called some of my classmates discuss their topics
and Mrs. Salvador also gives lectures to each of our topics. She adds
additional information and sometimes corrects the reporter. During those
moments I was able to observe that she was very lively and cool, she tells
story or site examples on every topic she discuss. I was able to finish my
report, although it’s not that good, I was still satisfied because I know I did
my best. We were not able to finish all the reporting during that day due to
lack of time.

August 11, 2010 – WEDNESDAY

On our last day we continue on the remaining topics that has been
not discuss yesterday I take down notes and listen to the reporter and Mrs.
Salvador, After that we presented our Nursing care Plan (NCP). Then we had our
quiz about the reports and the submission of all the requirements. Then we had
our evaluation Exam.
