cytoplasm
the region of the cell within the membrane that includes the fluid, the
cytoskeleton, and all of the organelles except the nucleus
ribosome
a cell organelle composed of RNA and protein; the site of protein
synthesis
nucleus
a part of the cell containing DNA and RNA and responsible for growth
and reproduction
organelle
one of the small bodies that are found in the cytoplasm of a cell and
that are specialized to perform a specific function
vesicle
a small cavity or sac that contains materials in a eukaryotic cell
endoplasmic reticulum
a system of membranes that is found in a cell's cytoplasm and that
assists in the production, processing, and transport of proteins and in
the production of lipids
chloroplast
an organelle found in plant and algae cells where photosynthesis occurs
mitochondrion
in eukaryotic cells, the cell organelle that is surrounded by two
membranes and that is the site of cellular respiration, which produces
ATP
vacuole
a fluid-filled vesicle found in the cytoplasm of plant cells or protists
nucleolus
structure within the nucleus that makes ribosomes
nuclear pore
a protein channel in the nuclear envelope that allows the free passage of
molecules smaller than 60 kD.
cytosol
the soluble portion of the cytoplasm, which includes molecules and
small particles, such as ribosomes, but not the organelles covered with
membranes.
microvilli
minute projections from the surface of some cells that help in
movement
cilia
tiny hair like projections of a cell that move in wave like motion
centrosome
a structure in animal cells containing centrioles from which the spindle
fibers develop.
centriole
cell organelle that aids in cell division in animal cells only
lysosome
an organelle that uses chemicals to break down food and worn out cell
parts
cytoskeleton
A network of fibers that holds the cell together, helps the cell to keep
its shape, and aids in movement
