Lesson Title: Band Rehearsal- 4-27-17
Standards
MU:Pr4.1.5- Demonstrate and explain how the selection of music to perform is influenced by
personal interest, knowledge, and context, as well as their personal and others’ technical skill
MU:Pr4.2.5b- When analyzing selected music, read and perform using standard notation.
MU:Pr4.3.5- Demonstrate and explain how intent is conveyed through interpretive decisions
and expressive qualities (such as dynamics, tempo, timbre, and articulation/style)
MU:Pr5.1.5a- Apply teacher-provided and established criteria and feedback to evaluate the
accuracy and expressiveness of ensemble and personal performances
MU:Pr6.1.5a- Perform music, alone or with others, with expression, technical accuracy, and
appropriate interpretation
MU:Re8.1.5 Demonstrate and explain how the expressive qualities (such as dynamics, tempo,
timbre, and articulation) are used in performers’ and personal interpretations to reflect

Objectives
SWBAT: Perform “When the Saints Go Marching In” and “Manhattan Beach March” with
correct pitch, tempo, and expression. Perform “Sakura” with correct pitch, tempo, and begin to
demonstrate musical intent.
Materials
Music, stands, instruments
Instructional Procedures
1. Roll
2. Have students play first note of “When the Saints Go Marching In”
3. Run through “When the Saints Go Marching In”
4. Begin work on smaller sections of “When the Saints Go Marching In” (Students will sing,
clap, or play their part)
5. Run though “When the Saints Go Marching In”
6. Transition to “Manhattan Beach March”
7. Run through “Manhattan Beach March”
8. Have students sing, sing and buttons, then play sections together.
9. Have students play longer phrases together and focus on improving struggling sections
of the band
10. Run through “Manhattan Beach March”
11. Transition to “Sakura”
12. Have students play first note
13. Have students sing though the piece with a focus on musical expression.
14. Have students focus on smaller sections with singing and buttons.
15. Have half of the band clap the beat while the other half plays then switch
16. Have the entire band play longer sections
17. Run through of “Sakura”
Assessment
Lesson Plan
Teacher feedback and peer feedback. (needs work, good, great)
Closure
Have students pack away their instrument, put chair and stand away, then line up quietly at the
door.
