LETTER FROM FLSMIDTH

Highlights
April 2017
It is a pleasure to welcome you to this edition of Highlights, as we
mark the occasion of 135 years serving the cement industry. We
are certainly proud of our heritage – it helps us to be even more
focused on meeting the needs of cement producers today and
tomorrow.

You will see this quite clearly in the special interview with our
CEO, Thomas Schulz, who candidly shares his thoughts on the
industry and our company. We are also delighted that Dr. Albert
Scheuer, Member of the Managing Board of HeidelbergCement,
has joined us to share his view of the industry. We appreciate Dr.
Scheuer and Mr. Schulz spending time with us.

Technology is an important driver of productivity improvement in

the industry. We look at recent trends in milling technology, with a
particular focus on the OK™ mill, as we introduce FLSmidth’s latest
design update for cement and raw grinding. The first OK raw mill
is already in production at Indarung in Indonesia and the first
performance results are promising. You can also read a site report
from KAR Cement in Iraq, which has successfully installed the
world's largest OK mill.

And this isn’t the only product launch. We are pleased to release
the latest version of the QCX/BlendExpert™ system –
demonstrating that we continue to put productivity and product
quality high on the agenda.

In other site reports, you can read about Oman Cement, which
has recently commissioned a grinding system. This was notable for
several reasons – one of those was the focus on safety, with the
milestone achievement of zero lost-time injuries after one million
hours worked. In the second of our feature articles highlighting
FLSmidth people, we hear from Tine Bremholm Kokfelt. She tells
her story of working in the constantly challenging yet exciting
international financing environment, helping customers to realise
their ambitions with large projects.

As usual, you can also see a summary of our latest new orders –
perhaps suggesting renewed momentum in the cement industry.
I hope you enjoy the read!

Strict quality control

In order for cement plants to achieve the best return on investment
and to ensure that the cement quality is kept consistent, it is crucial
to have very strict quality control procedures in place. Advanced
quality control systems are essential in minimising variability in
material composition throughout the cement manufacturing
process by controlling all chemical compositions. To make these
systems successful, they require fast and accurate sampling of
process streams as well as a well-working laboratory.

Prime supplier of cement
The OCC cement production facility is located in the Rusayl
Industrial Area, 60 km from Port Sultan Qaboos, Muscat, and
was first commissioned in 1983. It has continued to expand its
facilities, reaching a production capacity of 2.4 million tonnes
per year in 2011. Driven by increasing local demand, partly due
to infrastructure developments and future exportation prospects,
the company decided to add a fifth cement grinding unit to the
four ball mills already in operation. This addition was part of
OCC’s efforts to enhance its cement production capacity by one
million tonnes per year by 2016. Due to its remarkable, reliable Project
quantities
track record, FLSmidth was awarded as the prime supplier for
this project – its first Engineering, Procurement and Construction
(EPC) project in Oman.

What challenges is the cement

industry facing in the coming years?
One challenge is obviously the overcapacity
that has been built over the last 10 years.
In some markets, such as in Asia – China in
particular – we are facing oversupply. This
means that the time for building a lot of
greenfield plants is over – at least for now.
The current clear trend is modernisation
and consolidation – building brownfield
plants or modernisation of existing large
production lines while mothballing older,
smaller, inefficient production lines.

At the same time, export prices have fallen

practically to marginal cost. In coastal
regions, clinker is very cheap, because of
low freight costs and overcapacity in
clinker production. This is something the

The vertical roller mill (VRM) is well known

mill legacy
FLSmidth is poised to announce
the OK raw mill as the follow-up
to the world's largest cement VRM.
Since the 1980s, the OK mill has served the cement industry as an
energy-efficient and reliable solution for cement grinding. The
mill’s long-standing success, with over 150 installations
worldwide, can be attributed to a core robust design concept,
which has continuously evolved to include the best available
technology and incorporate the knowledge gained through
experience. As a result of this continued investment, the mill has
retained its leading position to meet the current needs of the
market: low power consumption, high availability, product quality,
and flexibility to grind diverse materials.

Lower power consumption

Compared with other cement grinding VRMs, the OK mill
consistently operates with lower airflow and the lowest power
consumption. As a result of the patented cement grinding profile
and an integral separator with industry-leading high efficiency, the
mill consistently uses ten percent less power than other cement
VRMs. This productivity benefit amounts to millions of kilowatts
saved annually for OK mill owners.

Design advantages
The design of the FLSmidth OK mill presents several clear
advantages. It allows the combination of standard VRM features
such as drying, grinding and separation process in one unit, thus
simplifying the plant layout. It also incorporates unique design
elements in the roller and table profile that improve operating
stability and reliability, giving a typical availability of 90 to 95

Operating parameters for ball mills

The following simple guidelines for operation of the ball mill were
developed more than 40 years ago:
1. Water cooling in the ball mill should only be used for
temperatures above 100°C. Furthermore, the cooling water
should be sprayed correctly into the mill.

If the water injection system is partly clogged or does not function

properly, prehydration might occur.

2. A mill outlet temperature of approximately 120°C is

recommended to ensure that the gypsum is sufficiently
dehydrated in the mill, thereby avoiding further dehydration in the
cement silo.

VRM grinding parameters

One of the VRM’s great advantages is its versatility. The mill can
easily grind multiple types of cement under different operating
parameters and with little to no transition time. To achieve the full
benefits of the VRM without problems, we should understand the
effect of the different operational modes on the cement

The use of oil and gas as a fuel continues
to be a heavily debated topic worldwide.

extremely damaging for the environment
with disastrous effects on climate change.
Furthermore, it’s quite possible that oil and

is therefore perceived as a crucial step
forward for the cement production
industry, not only to reduce carbon
emissions, but also to maximise the return
on investment. Thomas Jennewein, expert
in alternative fuels at FLSmidth Pfister,
discusses his view on the current market.

sources for heating purposes, what
challenges does the use of alternative
fuels pose?
Considering that coal and lignite as well as
oil and gas have been used as an energy
source since the industrial age, their
processing has been optimised so that
these fossil fuels are available in
standardised forms. Additionally, they are
currently very low priced, they have
beneficial material properties, such as their
handling ability, and the calorific value is
fairly steady all year round.
