Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Since BrainPop is available in multiple languages, this could help
address any ELL students in the class. Providing a written form of information prior to going into the activity
can help students who have trouble processing auditory information as well. Since BrainPop is available to
students at home, any students who might have processing or memory issues could always go and review the
information from the activity along with the handout.

Lesson idea implementation: For this lesson the students will begin by being introduced to what the Civil
rights movement is. This will be done by introducing an interactive webpage with information about the
movement itself as well as the life of MLK Jr. However, before introducing the students to the web page, give
each of them a handout of the timeline and explain to them what Civil Rights are. Then go over who MLK Jr. is
and talk briefly about each of the events featured on the timeline, while briefly discussing who other
impactful characters are (such as Rosa Parks, who will be discussed in a future lesson).
Then allow the students to explore the BrainPop page. After allowing students to explore the web page on
their own, the class will reconvene and explore the MLK Jr. BrainPop page together, first watching the
information video about his life and then collectively playing the timeline game. Playing this game as a class
will allow for more guidance for the students as well as allowing the teacher to explain more about the events
listed, hitting heavily on the more important points and quickly reviewing the less central points included on
the BrainPop activity. Doing this activity together can also help the teacher gauge how comfortable the class
is with the information and see how much more time students should be given to continue exploring the
BrainPop page or more of the media included in the interactive web page.

Reflective Practice: I believe this would help students understand the Civil Rights movement and how the
movement did not happen over time, it required decades of work from many people. By showcasing MLK Jr.
they will see how hard one person had to work to make any difference, but how big the difference can be
when made. This lesson is meant to be introductory, and could be extended further by introducing specific
events after, such as going more into detail on the March on Washington or the bus boycotts.
