Celebrating The Abstract
The UPSTAIRS Gallery continues to be one of the few outlets in the area for
challenging, unusual art and UPSTAIRS this month welcomes the second in a
series of three exhibitions, by new group Black Isle Abstract. This one is entitled
HARD EDGE GEOMETRY [1] by BETI BRICELJ. Beti’s painting is, as she explains,
“based on a modular principle of multiplication of the chosen geometric form
onto a certain picture surface, which is not always even, but it incorporates
itself through the alternation of its determinants in the process of verifying the
relationship between form and colour”. Got that?
Beti was born in 1974 in Postojna (Slovenia). In 2000 she graduated from
Fine Arts on Arthouse—College of Visual Arts in Ljubljana. She continued her
education in Australia where she lived for a year and where she was invited to
participate in a research study of the Aboriginal culture. She has presented work
for independent and joint exhibitions in Slovenia and abroad (Australia, Europe,
Israel India and including the renowned Museum of Geometric and MADI Art
in Dallas Texas, USA, where she received 3rd prize at their biennial: Origins in
geometry 2017). Her work is published in various international catalogues and
books of contemporary art.
More abstract art at KILMORACK GALLERY’s April exhibition, this time by Glasgow-

Work by other artists will also be on exhibition, and Kilmorack Gallery’s new

artists) will be available for purchase.

Look Up To The Stars...
THE BLOCKBUSTER AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR [4] (27 APR Vue)—it’s the big
one. Well, part one of the big two. This is where all the Marvel universe comes together—
The Avengers, Guardians of The Galaxy, Black Panther, Capt America, Iron Man, Ant-Man,
Spider-Man and Doctor Strange are all on show to try to overcome arch-baddie Thanos
as he attempts to ‘restore order’ to the universe. In fact, this so-far feeble incarnation of
Thanos may be the film’s weak point, but we’re hoping that the usually-excellent JOSH
BROLIN is left prosthetic-free enough to give a performance (and hopefully they’ll remember
to equip him with a meaningful script this time). This universe has so many stars it’s
ridiculous—but quick name check anyway, if only to underline the box-office bully this
will be: ANGELA BASSETT, DAVE BAUTISTA, PAUL BETTANY, CHADWICK BOSEMAN, JOSH
BROLIN, DON CHEADLE, BRADLEY COOPER, BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH, BENICIO DEL
TORO, VIN DIESEL, ROBERT DOWNEY JR., WINSTON DUKE, CHRIS EVANS, KAREN GILLAN,
DANAI GURIRA, CHRIS HEMSWORTH, TOM HIDDLESTON, TOM HOLLAND, SCARLETT
JOHANSSON, ANTHONY MACKIE, ELIZABETH OLSEN, GWYNETH PALTROW, CHRIS PRATT,
JEREMY RENNER, PAUL RUDD, MARK RUFFALO, ZOE SALDANA, COBIE SMULDERS, TESSA
THOMPSON, LETITIA WRIGHT, BENEDICT WONG and, somewhere, creator STAN LEE.
EC NEW RELEASES Outside of the comic book universes, there is a varied range of
releases for March and Eden Court have four of them. WONDERSTRUCK [11] (20–26 APR)
is a mystery of symmetrical tales set 50 years apart, from Carol director TODD HAYNES and
starring JULIANNE MOORE, MICHELLE WILLIAMS, plus young talents OAKES FEGLEY and
MILLICENT SIMMONDS. Other fresh produce at Eden Court includes LET THE SUNSHINE
IN [10] (20 APR), a witty French black comedy with JULIETTE BINOCHE; The self-explanatory
CUSTODY (27 APR–03 MAY) that picked up Venice Film Fest ‘Bests’ for Director (Xavier
Legrand) and First Feature; whilst 120 BPM [5] (20–26 APR EC) is set among rallies,
protests and euphoric dance parties in Paris during the early 90s AIDS epidemic. All
recommended. [Films in GREEN are Eden Court’s Indie Pics for this month]
VUE NEW RELEASES Usual mixed bag of major and slightly less-so film releases for
Vue Inverness, some to see, some to miss!: A QUIET PLACE [2], (06 APR Vue) is a creepy
supernatural horror in which EMILY BLUNT stars alongside her husband JOHN KRASINSKI
(who also directs)—a little low-key family indulgence before she leaps into opposite-land in
Mary Poppins Returns, at Xmas time; DEATH WISH (06 APR Vue)—an entirely unnecessary
remake of the ‘74 Bronson film. With BRUCE WILLIS playing the unreconstructedly imagined
vigilante in this weirdly pointless idea of an ‘alpha male’ fantasy; I KILL GIANTS [1] (06
APR Vue) is a rather more imaginative creation altogether, a fantasy thriller film based on
a graphic novel, directed by Anders Walter and starring the refreshing line-up of MADISON
WOLFE, IMOGEN POOTS, SYDNEY WADE, RORY JACKSON, ZOE SALDANA and NOEL
CLARKE; RAMPAGE [9] (13 APR Vue)—now we don’t want to jinx this, perhaps this
sci-fi-monster flick from San Andreas director is actually top notch, but tbh, when we see
Dwayne Johnson playing a primatologist and Naomie Harris a genetic engineer, we think
we’re in trouble. Big trouble. Quite literally, in the case of a giant gorilla, wolf and crocodile.
Umm.... LOVE, SIMON [8] (06 APR) is a typical Spring Break teen coming-of-age release,
with a ‘cool’ soundtrack and squeaky clean teens in high school dealing with seemingly
important dramas. This one’s about a closeted gay pupil being blackmailed and having
fallen in love with a mystery person online. As you do. GHOST STORIES [3] (06 APR) is
from the successful stage play of the same name—made by the same peeps, starring
some UK talent including MARTIN FREEMAN, the tremendous ALEX LAWTHER and PAUL
WHITEHOUSE. It’s supernatural, so… y’know...

and SAM NEILL and umpteen ‘puter-animated animals, Ava DuVernay sci-fi A WRINKLE IN TIME

slightly older movie that has confounded critics and become a massive success with audiences
returns, HUGH JACKMAN musical, THE GREATEST SHOWMAN [12] screens 20–22 APR, and,
pay attention—this is the SINGALONG version! Yussss!
Live theatre on screen is a quietly great revolution in cinema—if you haven’t tried it yet,
don’t be such a wuss, give it a go, you won’t regret it. A real highlight for Shakespeare fans
this month is CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON and NIAMH CUSACK’s MACBETH [15] (Live 11,
Encore 15 APR EC). Other EC highlights worth your attention (and you can read more about
on the centre pages) include DISTANT SKY [14] the live NICK CAVE concert (12 APR),
MY GOLDEN DAYS [16] (18/19 APR), THE DIVINE ORDER [13] (06–12 APR), MAKALA
(17/18 APR), a trio of films celebrating the awesome INGMAR BERGMAN’S centenary and
InFiFa’s season of JAPANESE FILM (both various dates, see below).

KIDS
Granny With Attitude.
David Walliams must be the country’s most prolific children’s author, as well
as the most refreshingly inventive. As relentless in turning out his tales as
his audience are to voraciously consume them, it’s no surprise that stage
adaptations of his stories are proving to be just as successful as the books
from which they come.
So you can guarantee an excited audience when GANGSTA GRANNY [1] comes
to EDEN COURT from 26–28 APR. That it comes from the producers of another
magnificent kid-friendly franchise, Horrible Histories, ensures the yarn about
a young lad going off for the adventure of a lifetime with his nan should be a
whole lot of fun. And keep Walliams’ fans happy in the weeks before he no
doubt brings out yet another book.
Earlier in the month, on 15 & 16 APR there’s something aimed at slightly younger
family members in the form of FOUR GO WILD IN WELLIES [2]. This family show
is a playful look at social structures and of how friendships are built, broken and
mended. Independance, an inclusive dance company for people with disabilities
and their carers, bring their hit production to examine collaboration and competition,
the joy of inventiveness and curiosity and the interaction between ourselves and the
world around us. It’s suitable for 3–5 year olds and their carers.
There seems to be something of a craze for riffs on the tale of the little girl
and the big bad wolf in recent months with shows telling the story via dance,
symbolism and even Gaelic. Now there’s a version, RED RIDING HOOD’S
MAGIC PURSE at UNIVERSAL HALL, FINDHORN on 14 APR which sees it
performed by puppets. Part of the Puppet Animation Festival and presented
by Clydebuilt this is a classic story told with a difference. Favourite characters
abound—an adventurous Red Riding Hood, an independent Granny (home at
last from her trip round the world), and of course the wonderful Wicked Wolf,
who plans to have Granny for lunch and Little Rosie for afternoon tea.

In The Club.
Now that spring’s here, in name at least, how better to celebrate the extra hours of daylight
under the wide Highland skies than at OUTDORES, the increasingly popular clubbing
shindig on the shores of Loch Ness at Dores Inn? The next one’s on 28 APR, headlined by
BRADLEY ZERO [1], with a strong supporting line up including HIGHLAND SOUL COUNCIL
and the always excellent ALLY RIDGERS.
It’s a particularly strong month for clubbers with IRONWORKS hosting a trio of unmissable
nights. First on 07 APR it’s the always eclectic Radio 1 stalwart B.TRAITS [2], then on
27 APR a true legend of the British DJ scene and Progressive House/techno pioneer,
BILLY NASTY [3] and on 14 APR, a techno extravaganza featuring SPARTAQUE &
SPEKTRE. Meanwhile on 06 APR at TROPICANA (Inverness) and on 07 APR over at NAIRN
PLAYHOUSE, I’M A RAVER has more DJs than you can shake a glowstick at inc. CAMMY,
GARY MCF, B2B, BAD BOY, RANKIN [4] and ZITKUS. Tickets are selling fast so don’t delay.
And the clubbing attractions don’t end there, with local hip hop funksters SPRING BREAK
[5] launching their excellent debut album Tropicaledonia at MAD HATTERS on 14 APR.
More about the band and their album overleaf >>>.
If clubbing’s a bit frantic for you there’s still a lot more to to tempt you out, with some fine
country in the form of Irish country superstar DEREK RYAN [6] at EDEN COURT on 14 &
15 APR, Glasgow-based RAINTOWN [7] at IRONWORKS on 20 APR and Louisiana’s finest,
ROBERT MIZZELL [8] at STRATHPEFFER PAVILION on 27 APR. There’ll be stetsons aplenty.
Local folk and traditional sounds are also well represented at EDEN COURT this month,
with SKIPINNISH on 06 & 07 APR, CHRIS STOUT & CATRIONA MACKAY [9] celebrating
the release of their new album, Bare Knuckle, on 27 APR and the magnificent DUNCAN
CHISHOLM [10] on 29 APR.
More folk excellence from SALT HOUSE [11] at EDEN COURT on SAT 14 APR. The trio of
multi-instrumentalist Ewan MacPherson (Shooglenifty) and violist/fiddler Lauren MacColl
(RANT) is completed by singer-songwriter Jenny Sturgeon—expect to hear plenty of tracks
from recently released second LP Undersong, produced by folk-scene heavyweight Andy Bell.
A word too for THE DUBLIN LEGENDS [12] who bring their Seven Drunken Nights and More
tour to EDEN COURT on SUN 08 APR. Born out of The Dubliners after the death of founding
member Barney McKenna in 2012 and John Sheahans’ retiral, this new incarnation retains
just as much energy as the original line-up and a phenomenal array of great songs.
There are even a couple of highly recommended proper rock gigs that you won’t want to
miss. On 01 APR, THE LITTLE UNSAID [13] bring their Nick Cave influenced sounds to
EDEN COURT while BROKEN RECORDS [14], whose Hootananny appearance several
years ago remains one of the finest shows we’ve ever seen, make their long-awaited return

The INVERNESS WHISKY & GIN FESTIVAL [2] is another hugely successful event,
so expect much slightly tipsy fun at the Big Day Out at BOGBAIN FARM on 07 APR.
There’ll be tastings, advice, bottles for sale and live music throughout the day,
plus a pop-up restaurant featuring the very best in Scottish cuisine.
And that Scottish cuisine will no doubt include something being celebrated at yet
another festival this month. The HIGHLAND HAGGIS FESTIVAL at SPEAN BRIDGE
MEMORIAL HALL on 08 APR is dedicated to our national dish, with eating, drinking
and dancing from 11am–4pm.
If you’d rather celebrate the Great Outdoors, albeit while staying inside, the
KENDAL MOUNTAIN FESTIVAL at EDEN COURT on 26 APR, an evening packed
full of award-winning films, first-hand accounts from captivating explorers and a
chance to win a weekend getaway in November. Guest speakers are mountaineer
MOLLIE HUGHES, the youngest woman in the world to summit Everest from both
the north and south sides, and endurance cyclist MARKUS STITZ, best known
for his journey around the world using just one gear on his bike! Recommended.

SPORT
Like Ya Lycra…
FILM
British cycling may be in the news for all the wrong reasons at the moment, but
thankfully that doesn’t seem to have tempered the nation’s enthusiasm for the sport,
both in terms of being excited about the new season’s racing and, perhaps more
importantly, actually participating. One of the hottest tickets for keen cyclists is always
ETAPE LOCH NESS which, since its inaugural edition in 2014 has become one of the
premier sportives in the whole country, entry for this year’s event on 29 APR selling
out in minutes.
That’s hardly surprising as the closed-road 66 mile route, complete with its own King Of
The Mountains stage, takes place in the most glorious of settings around Loch Ness.
It starts in Bught Park at the crack of dawn, but there are plenty of opportunities to
cheer from the roadside en route and, around lunchtime at the finishing line by Eden
Court—where the competitors gather to show off their well-earned medals and restock
on calories from a variety of food stalls. Well worth heading along to take in what is
quite a spectacle. Full details at etapelochness.com
Racing of a rather more niche kind takes place on 15 APR with this year’s MAN V
HORSE at LOCH NESS RIDING CENTRE in DORES. Continuing an age-old tradition of
pitting human against quadruped this takes place on a 27 km course (organised by the
South Loch Ness Access Group) with a £100 prize to the fastest man or horse plus
the Jacobite Warrior perpetual Quaich. There are also trophies awarded to fastest male
and female runners and fastest horse, with bragging/neighing rights for all the winners.

House!
Plenty of good stuff on at EDEN COURT this month, as if the people at Creative
Scotland need any more reminders that it’s providing a vital cultural service to the
Highland community. And there are some big names coming in BINGO! [1] From
19–21 APR. Taking its inspiration from the fact that two million women go to the bingo
every week in the UK, this co-production from Grid Iron and Stellar Quines is about
Daniella who’s done “a very bad thing” and needs the winnings to make things right
or she’ll be forced to resort to desperate measures.
With cracking original songs, a lot of banter and cheeky humour, the cast includes
LOUISE MCCARTHY of BBC’s Scot Squad and Two Doors Down, WENDY SEAGER,
who played Susan in Killing me Softly and featured in Still Game, BARBARA RAFFERTY,
star of River City, Brave New World, Rab C Nesbitt and The Last King of Scotland,
and JO FREER who starred in Dundee Rep’s Sunshine on Leith as well as River City.
Get your tickets before they go—it should be good. (Plus see promo page 2/3)
As should CRIMES UNDER THE SUN [2] at EC from 17–20 APR presented by award-
winning theatre company New Old Friends. A secluded island hotel just off the English
coast becomes a crime scene, as a scandal-inducing femme-fatale is felled. All the
guests on the island are suspects—but are they alone and is this the first crime
this idyllic island has witnessed? The show features four actors playing multiple
outrageous characters, and a plot that romps along in the company’s trademark
inventive style.
MOTHER’S RUIN [3] at EC on 28 APR is, as the name suggests, about gin. And
it sounds most entertaining, being a darkly comic cabaret taking us on a raucous
journey through the history of gin with true tales from 18th-century London, New York
speakeasies, the Australian bush and the jungles of Peru. Plus it features songs by
Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone, Martha Wainwright and more. Excellent.
If you enjoyed previous groundbreaking shows at Eden Court like Dalloway, The
Unremarkable Death of Marilyn Monroe, I, Elizabeth and Austen’s Women, you’ll be
excited about the company behind those bringing a radical new interpretation of HG
Wells’ THE TIME MACHINE [4] to town on 24 APR. Producer REBECCA VAUGHAN and
writer/director Elton Townend Jones take us on a wild ride through time which is part
philosophical journey, part nightmare adventure and, perhaps above all, a cautionary tale.
Another show inspired by a classic tale comes to EDEN COURT on 13 APR as the
GRIMM TALE OF THE HUNTSMAN presents a world where the characters from
Grimm’s fairy tales come together in a story of love, jealousy and change—shaken
2 up by the colourful characters and, if you please, “delinquent dwarves”. It’s the first
production by Inverness Student Drama Society, devised and organised solely by
Inverness College and UHI Inverness students from all academic backgrounds, so
fully deserving of your support.
