Answer: The solution for educational problem in Indonesia

One of the main arguments of curriculum renewal in Indonesia, focusing more on character building and
integrated learning, is the escalating demand of curriculum adaptation to social phenomenon happening
in the society, in this case juvenile delinquency (Kemendikbud, 2013). Curriculum 2006, known as KTSP,
was regarded, besides outdated and overloaded, unable to negotiate such a social complexity. There has
also been a debate in the society concerning on whether or not the curriculum needs to be renewed and
whether or not the new curriculum will result in the betterment of the quality of Indonesian education. In
one hand, the Ministry of Education asserts that the new curriculum will benefit student, for its main
focus is on character-based education. But on the other hand, both the teachers and the systems are not
ready yet. In this paper, we would like to discuss (1) the historical perspectives of the teaching of
character building in formal schools’ curriculum in Indonesia, (2) the challenges of the implementation of
the teaching of character building in Curriculum 2013, (3) some possible approaches that might
contribute to evaluate the draft of the curriculum.

1. Improve the infrastructure & education facilities

His quality of infrastructure in our country becomes one of serious problem. Student can learn
well if there is good infrastructure & facility. But, we shouldn’t judge this problem as main
problem. The infrastructure & facility are our problems too.

2. Increase subsidy for university by different distribution solution appears if the education budget
realized. In this time, by the government initiative most of state university get subsidy. The
subsidy is different from each university. 4.Improve the management of each university
3. Good management in the university is very important, because management have ability to
control and decide university’s future. Management control almost the thing that happened in
the university, include finance. We think government need to take care and pay attention about
management of each university, so we can decrease opportunity to do corruption.
5.Increase lecturer’s prosperity
4. Next, increase lecturer’s prosperity is one of solution that we will give to our government. We
know that the lecture/teacher is our hero. Why hero? Because they always give their knowledge
to us. They make us clever. They teach us everyday, every time, everywhere. So, why we don’t
take care to lecturer’s prosperity.
5. Curriculum Planning

Education curriculum in Indonesia often changes. Government still looks for the best curriculum
for our country. But, the curriculum’s changing is too often. Some the time he/se of the student
feels difficult to adapt with new curriculum in a short time. Maybe in the time he/she can adapt
with new curriculum, the curriculum change again. The curriculum’s changing is to find out a
match system to our country. But, we think the government should plan curriculum well and try
it to some school/university before publish it. So, the changing of curriculum that very often will
not happen again.

6. Lecture Training

In this modern era, lecture must have high skill. So, in our opinion, the lecture and teacher
should join lecture training to improve their skill and ability.

7. Adapted education system from another country

We can also try to adapt foreign education system. We can choose which can make our
education system better. But, we have to do it step by step, little by little.

Arguably, the affectivity of Curriculum 2013 in addressing the issue of character building might
be apparent after the curriculum is fully implemented in 3-5 years from now. It might possibly
be done by comparing the success and the failure of character education in some indicators
before Curriculum 2013 was implemented and after it is implemented. What we are trying to do
here is to provide an analysis of how character education in Indonesia has so far been integrated
into national curriculum, how it has been implemented and taught by teachers at schools, and
what outcome that has been resulted from this implementation. We argue that solving the
problem of character building in Indonesia cannot be done only through the explicit integration
of religious and cultural values in the documents of curriculum, as previously in practice
teachers also teach life value while teaching subject matters at schools.

It what makes us conclude that what we need to provides to support character education in
Indonesia are to facilitate (1) professional development and professional learning community,
(2) parental and community involvement, and (3) ethno pedagogy for students.
A. Conclusion

The quality of education in Indonesia is still very low when compared with the quality of
education in other countries. The main causes of effectiveness, efficiency, and
standardization of education are still less optimized. Other problems are the lack of
physical facilities, the low quality of teachers, the low welfare of teachers, the low student
achievement, the low level of educational opportunities, the low relevance of education
to the needs, and the high cost of education.
The solutions can be given from the above problems, among others, by changing the
social systems related to the education system, and improve the quality of teacher
professionalism and student achievement.
B. Suggestions
The development of the world in this era of globalization is demanding changes to the
national education system better and able to compete healthily in all fields. One way that
must be done by the Indonesian people not to be left behind with other countries is to
improve the quality of education first.
With the increased quality of education means human resources are born will be better
quality and will be able to bring this nation to compete healthily in all fields in the
international world.
