CREATING SUITEPROMOTIONS
This document explains how to create common promotions in NetSuite using the SuitePromotions feature, and the
expected outcomes of such promotions.

* The default option for applying discount, is to apply discount to each unit of the discounted item in the order. This is not, however, a
selectable option on the promotion form. When a Unit quantity is added, the user has the option to specify if the discount is applied to
the cheapest or most expensive item. Such promotions are repeated if multiples of the Unit quantity are added to the transaction.
Currently there is no option to set a limit on how many times the discount can be repeated.

ITEM PROMOTIONS
Item promotions allow you to offer discounts on items included in an order. These promotions create line-level
discounts for each item defined on the promotion.
Item promotions may include the following:
• A percentage or amount off of a type of item (for example, 40% off all laptops)
• A percentage or amount off of an item if certain order criteria are met (for example, “buy one, get one free” or
“50% off monitors on orders over $600)
• An item-specific promotional discount for a segment of customers (for example, customers who registered in
the last twelve months get 20% off desktop computers)
• A promotional discount off items for a segment of customers if certain order criteria are met (for example,
customers who registered in the last month who buy one item, get another free)
• A discount on the price and shipping cost of an item (20% off the total and free shipping on all computer
monitors)

CURRENT LIMITATIONS OF ITEM PROMOTIONS
Currently the following is not possible:
• Apply discount to one item only.
WHY? - You can specify how many units must be bought, but not the maximum number
of units. The Apply the discount every… box must be checked to specify how many units
must be bought in the Quantity. When this box is checked Repeat is automatically on.
The following promotions will not be possible:
− One Item flat/% discount. For example, $10 off a dress
− Buy X, Get Y – One item only. For example, Buy 2 dresses and get a free T-shirt
− Spend X, Get a Free Gift – One item only. For example, Spend $20 or more, and get
a free T-shirt.
• Apply discount on each specified item when you buy a minimum number of a different
item.
WHY? - You cannot have a promotion that is applied to each item and is repeatable,
because you cannot specify the number of units to buy when the Apply the discount
every… box is not checked.
The following promotions will not be possible:
− Buy X, Get Y – Each item – Repeated discount. For example, For every 2 T-shirts
you buy, get $5 off each dress in your order!

ORDER PROMOTIONS
Order-level promotions offer percentage or currency discounts at the order level and
can be based on the order total or on items included in the order.
Order-level promotions may include the following:
• A percentage or amount off (for example, 40% off the order)
• A percentage or amount off if certain order criteria are met (for example, 10%
discount on orders over $600)
• An order-specific promotional discount for a segment of customers (for example,
customers who registered in the last twelve months get 20% off their first order)
• A promotional discount off items for a segment of customers if certain order criteria
are met (for example, customers who registered in the last month get 25% off orders
over $100, during the first month)

You can create item-based promotions that provide shipping discounts on certain
shipping methods. In this way, your customers can use a coupon code that applies
discounted shipping costs to an item on the order. You can also create a coupon code
that ships a particular item on an order for free, different from the rest of the items in
the order.
