The This project is designed to provide a working knowledge of the principles of sound, particularly in
project those areas related to music technology. This is supported through the study of the physical
brief properties of sound, human hearing, musical instruments and the environments where they are
played. You will consider the acoustic properties of instruments and how the environment in
which they are played affects the sound they produce.
Scenario As a music producer you have been asked to assess the acoustical suitability of live and
recording facilities. You must present a report that explains sound theory, human hearing,
acoustic properties of instruments, and the room acoustics. It must contain diagrams and
illustrations.
Learning Outcomes
LO 1 Understand the theory of sound 1.1 Explain the attributes of sound waves
1.2 Explain the theoretical basis of the harmonic series and
non-harmonic partials
LO 2 Understand the theory of hearing 2.1 Explain the physiology of hearing and the causes for loss
of hearing
2.2 Explain the principles of localisation and perception of
distance
2.3 Analyse music using a range of listening models
LO 3 Understand acoustic properties of 3.1 Explain the acoustical properties of sound generators and
instruments and voices resonators
3.2 Assess the impact of physical form on the sound of an
instrument
LO 4 Understand the acoustic properties 4.1 Assess the suitability of a location for performances or
of performance areas recording situations
4.2 Present a range of acoustic treatment solutions to enhance
the sound of a location

Task 2 Present section two as an understanding of the theory of hearing. Explain the Part 2 of
2.1, physiology of hearing, the principles of localisation, and analyse music using a written report.
2.2, 2.3 range of listening models. Include sections on potential causes for loss of hearing,
and perception of distance.
Task 3 You must explain acoustic properties of instruments and human voices in section Part 3 of
3.1, 3.2 three. The properties of sound generators and the impact physical form has on written report.
sound creation must be explained in this section.
Task 4 In the final section you must show your understanding of room acoustics by Part 4 of
