Dear Fifth Grade Student, Congratulations! You are on a new journey into fifth grade! In preparation for next year, we would like you to CHOOSE one of the two books to read over the summer, Reading one of the two books and completing the assignments that go with itis a tequirement, not an option. Your book report is due by the first week of schoo! and will be graded ‘The BFG (Roald Dahl) Or Frindle (Andrew Clements) If you choose to read BEG, you must complete the comprehension questions and one of the two creative options. If you choose to read Frindle, you must complete the general book report and one of the project choices, Along with the summer reading, do not forget to study you times tables so you are ready for fifth grade math! You must aiso complete the math packet and bring it to school the first week. ‘These are your first assignments as fifth graders! Show us your best work! Stay close to God this summer, have fun, and be safe! When you have finished, complete a project choice! © Frindle Project Choice © Directions: As you finish up the book Frindle, please start to work on ONE project that you can complete to demonstrate your comprehension of the book. Be creative and have fun! Project Choices:**Please make sure you have your first AND last name on both projects** 1, Report Card: Decide on § criteria by which to judge a character from the book. Design a report card and grade that character based on the criteria that you selected. Include grades and a comment section where you write specific comments about the character, 2, Book Jacket: Create a book jacket where you write a description of 1 character on the left hand flap of the book jacket and another character on the right hand flap. Create an illustration for the cover of the book jacket and a review for the book on the back of the book jacket. 3. Venn Diagram: Draw a Venn diagram to compare and contrast 2 characters in ‘the story: 4, Letter: Write a letter to a character in the story telling how her or his life is like yours OR how it is very different from yours. Please write about at least 3 comparisons. 5, Poster: Design a poster advertising your book. Come up with a catchy phrase so people will start using it. What famous people or celebrities might you get to endorse it? Include interesting details about the book that would make others want to read it. 6. Information Cube: Make an information cube about your book with the following on the 6 different sides of the cube: Title, Characters, Setting, Plot, Favorite Part, Illustration of Scene 7. News Article: Write an authentic looking news article describing Nick's discovery of the new word, “Frindle.” Make sure to have a picture that matches your article. As you are reading this book, you will be answering the following questions based on your reading. Be sure to answer questions completely. You may type this or answer the questions on this paper. The BFG: Creative Activity Directions: For the second part of your BFG project, you will choose ONE of the following activities to complete (either creative writing or designing). Option 1 Chapter 14, from the book The BFG by Roald Dahl, is about good dreams and nightmares that the BFG (Big Friendly Giant) collected. After students listen to this chapter, during a read-aloud, | have them share their dream experiences both orally and in writing. Creative Writing Project Ideas: (Dreams can be real or fantasy.) (Pick only one) * Make a recipe for a dream, including ingredients and mixing instructions * Describe and illustrate a dream. Classify it as a "Golden Phizzwizard" or a "Trogglehumper". * Create a vocabulary web. Write down as many words as you can to describe your dreams Option 2: Design a Dream Jar In this project you may recreate an actual dream you have experienced or make up a fantasy dream. Materials * Magazines * Small objects from home (Items need to be small enough in size to fit in the jar.) * Plastic jar print out attached (you may use a real, plastic clear jar if you want, like a peanut butter jar] * Scissors & glue Directions: 1. Make a list of images or objects that you want to include in your dream. 2. Collect magazine cutouts of these items or small objects, such as miniature toys, to represent the dream contents. Or draw pictures! 3. Paste the items to the jar. 4. Write the title of your dream and your name. 5. Write a brief description of what the objects represent.
