English Versión:
Published original/y in 1959, in a Spanish-English edition, this book's cover original/y explained:
"Based on more than 300 borings and on testing of about 10,000 specimens, the stratigraphyof the subsoil in the metropolitan area and the average mechanical properties of the clayey materials sampled at different depths were determined. This information, complemented with studies on the minera/ogical composition, the comparison of both in-situ shear strength and that determined at the laborato1y, the dynamical characteristics of clays in torsion and bending, and the one-dimensional compressibility integrate Part A of this book. Part B deals with regional subsidence of Mexico City and includes piezometric measurements in the urban area, /evelings from the beginning of the 20th Century and analytical studies of the phenomenon based on average properties and on the theory of consolidation. Final/y, Part C, devoted to the behavior of foundations, presents case histories of buildings founded on footings, partially or total/y compensated concrete raft structures and point-bearing or friction piles."
The supp/ement published in 1987, following the study of what happened in the earthquake of 1985, was added as part D (Volume II) to this Third Edition which commemorates the 60th anniversary of the Instituto de Ingeniería. In a third volume a review ofthe advancement on the matter, between 1959 -date of the first edition- and 2016, is included. The research, supported by technological advances, covers the vast basin whose urban area has expanded considerably since the time when the original authors addressed the study
